Northern Opps Scholarship Reception
On 23-October, we recognised the 27 students who were awarded scholarships as part of Youth Opportunities' new scholarship program. Through our Northern Opportunities initiative, we are sponsoring five scholarships for students from Playford International College: Kittatam, Lachlan, Marilyn, Deeplove and Alexander. It was great for the Kain Foundation team including board directors and volunteers from Kain Lawyers and Halpin Financial Services to meet these students and celebrate with their families. Kittatam (pictured with Foundation Commercial Manager, Lisa Tarca) did a stellar job as MC of the event. Congrats to all the scholarship winners. We hope they'll apply to renew their scholarships in 2018.

Mr. P joins Foundation Board of Directors
We're pleased to announce that Evan Polymeneas, or Mr. P, as he's know to by his students at Salisbury High School has joined the Kain Foundation Board of Directors. We first met Evan (pictured with two students presenting at a Foundation event earlier this year) through our Work Inspiration program, and got to know him quite well when he joined our immersion trip to Uganda in August. It will be great to have a teacher's perspective joining our talented and dedicated board of directors.

Home Dedication Ceremony
Nice coverage in the Gawler Bunyip from the Habitat for Humanity home dedication ceremony on 5-October. We loved how the ceremony was held on little Ibaad's first birthday. And nice of Habitat's new mascot, Hammer, to join the picture.

Alexander Betts on Transforming a Broken Refugee System
We recently attended a lecture by Oxford University Professor Alexander Betts, organised by the Hugo Centre for Migration and Population Research. Video of the lecture is available here. Recommended viewing is at 20 mins when he discusses the differences between the refugee systems in Uganda v. Kenya. Quite interesting how Uganda's progressive policy giving refugees the right to work and freedom of movement versus Kenya's policies of encampment lead to dramatically different economic outcomes.
