Watch - University of Florida AD Scott Stricklin On Servant Leadership
Florida-McElwain: As you know, Gators AD Stricklin & FB HC McElwain decided to part company in a mutual agreement. Officially: "We want to thank Coach McElwain for his efforts in leading the Gator football program. We are confident Coach Shannon will provide the proper guidance to the players and rest of staff during this time and we will begin a national search for the next head coach." Included is Stricklin's full presser, which many in the media said last night is a blue print for how ADs should engage on this challenging topic. (link); Yahoo's Forde: "It takes a lot for a coach with those credentials to be sent packing in this brisk and brusque manner, but a unique set of circumstances all added up against him." (link); Former ESPN headliner McMurphy reports McElwain could receive far less than his full buyout, which is in the $12M range, due to his death threat comments from last week. McMurphy has a source saying McElwain's agent, the omnipresent Sexton, won't fight UF on the buyout due to his portfolio of clients who may get a look from the Gators (conflict, meet interest). Last nugget: "Florida’s firing of Jim McElwain is SEC’s 24th head coaching change since Nick Saban came to Alabama in 2007." (link, link)
Former Iowa Wrestling student-athlete Graves has been arrested on "federal computer-hacking charges in a high-tech cheating scheme in which he allegedly obtained advanced copies of tests and changed grades for himself and classmates." Graves allegedly installed keyloggers in computers to get his professor's credentials to log into the university grading and email systems. The scheme lasted from March 2015 until December 2016 when one instructor alerted campus IT officials that Graves' grades had been changed in the system without her authorization. Ninety instances of potential improprieties that also included five other students. No indication if the other students were fellow student-athletes. (link)
Do MBAs or JDs make better CEOs? University of Chicago Law School scholar Henderson points to his joint research that shows companies run by lawyers have, on average, less litigation on the books than their counterparts. From a performance standpoint, firms run by lawyers did better in high-litigation industries than not. In conclusion: "Our research produces two conclusions. First, CEOs with legal expertise are effective at managing litigation risk by, in part, setting more risk-averse firm policies. Second, these actions enhance value only when firms operate in an environment with high litigation risk or high compliance requirements. Otherwise, these actions could actually hurt the firm. Ideally, of course, a CEO would be the best of both worlds: able to reduce litigation through prudent decision making while also knowing when to take risks to enhance value for the firm." Interesting framework to think about college athletics leadership. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
From Columbus to Stillwater for ESPN College GameDay as the show is set to air from the annual Oklahoma State-Oklahoma Bedlam kick next Saturday. (link); A good FYI for the new travel restrictions that went into place on the 26th for those heading back to the States from international locations. Get to the airport even earlier, personal devices may be inspected, self-check in may be suspended & you may be interviewed at check-in or your gate. (link)

Arizona State Prez Crow does not believe his MBB program is wrapped up in the FBI/DOJ probe, plans to continue working with Adidas. The Sun Devils' current deal with Three Stripes is worth $1.575M annually in cash & an average $2.4M in product & at least $350K in royalties. More from Crow, "Our relationship with Adidas is in two dimensions. One dimension is the apparel deal – all major sports programs … have relationships with one of the apparel manufacturers and we have a relatively standard apparel deal. And then we also have this area of joint activity with them in what we call ‘Global Sport’ and the advancement of global sport, which is more of a series of research projects and other kinds of initiatives." Full contract included. (link)
Auburn MBB HC Pearl: "While I do not know with absolute certainty who the two unnamed players are in the federal complaint, I have had my suspicions of who the players’ identities are likely to be. However, out of an abundance of caution, and consistent with our previously stated position, because there is an ongoing investigation, I cannot comment further at this time." Further, Pearl says Compliance hasn't informed him that any members of his squad are ineligible as of now. (link)
Oklahoma FB student-athlete Bledsoe & his legal team have responded to the NCAA's push to dismiss Bledsoe's civil suit that the governing body violated his rights by suspending him a year for the use of a performance enhancing drug. A single scoop of a teammate's protein powder looks to be at the center of the situation. "The lawsuit now claims the NCAA’s bylaws for drug testing are a violation of Bledsoe’s procedural and substantive process rights under the Due Process Clause of the Oklahoma Constitution, 'because they administer damaging, life-changing, quasi-criminal punishments to student-athletes on strict liability basis' in cases without knowledge or intent of wrongdoing." More. (link); One more legal note as Dartmouth is pushing back on the town's decision to block the construction of a new indoor facility for the Big Green. (link)
The Denton Record-Chronicle's Vito dives into attendance issues for North Texas FB, highlighted most recently by a virtually empty fourth-quarter stands on Saturday as the Mean Green held on to beat Old Dominion. UNT averages 20,418 fans this season, up from last year's 19,878, but Vito says "the stark reality is a long, slow climb in the stands might be the best case scenario. ... Putting fans in the stands for college football games is a battle these days. UNT is doing a good job of fighting that war, but still has a long way to go." The trend is not unique to Denton, as Vito points out, "Unless you're Alabama, you're fighting an uphill battle. College football attendance is dwindling." (link)
Remember the movie, 'The Program'? (I mean, seriously, how could you forget?!?). Here's a fun read on how the 1993 flick put South Carolina in the spotlight. Former Gamecocks Sports Info lead Tharp: "The university brokered the deal and it was kind of one of the first football movies of that nature that came out. We worked very closely with them, they had pretty good access at the stadium, and the training room, weight room, locker room. And of course they had to work around the schedule of the football team. But it was never a hindrance or anything, and the longer they were there, you’d see James Caan down in Five Points or Halle Berry walking around. There were so many former players in the movie. [...] It would be very difficult to do something like that now. It was kind of a new frontier. There were certainly some times where you were scratching your head and wondering what was the deal, but at the end, everybody knew it was a good business deal for the school and pitched in and made it work." Former New Mexico AD Krebs told two staffers to delete emails related to the reinstatement of the ski team, specifically citing concern than "an independent journalist who runs a watchdog website would get it sooner" than the planned public announcement of the information. The emailed instructions came after a FOIA request: "If not (covered by the request), she needs to delete it and delete from delete file and send file." Interim Prez Abdallah says he knew nothing of the emails. (link)
More Weekend Wrap: USA Today's Wolken updates his weekly Misery Index. This week's unfortunate inclusions: Florida, Florida State, Texas A&M, Penn State & Nebraska. Also receiving consideration: USF, UCLA, TCU, Louisville & Tennessee. (link); USA Today's Schroeder on the first CFP rankings due out tomorrow, "...come Tuesday, we’ll all get angry. When that first Top 25 is released, we’ll take what we’ve seen so far, shine up the talking points that make our team look best (or the other guys look worst), fast-forward everything to the end of the season as though nothing much could change, and then present our case very, very loudly. Until next week, when we do it all again." (link); The Dallas Morning News' Carlton gets comments from Big 12 Commish Bowlsby on his league's CFP chances, "At this point last year, we had a lot of scenarios in play. We still have a lot of scenarios in play." (link)
The Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner recounts the frustration of former Washington/UCLA/Colorado HC Neuheisel from earlier in the week when he wanted to show a highlight package of Arizona standout Tate on his CBS Sports Network show. The problem? CBSSN doesn't pay the Pac-12 Networks a fee for highlight rights. Neuheisel: "I’m a west coast guy, I want to show the stuff that’s going on out there, because I know it’s good football. But if it’s on the Pac-12 Networks, we’re out of luck. It makes no sense." The former HC also went on to say he previously dropped a segment on Stanford student-athlete & Heisman Trophy-hopeful Love for the same reasons. (link)
The Daily Pennsylvanian's Holland digs into Penn student-athlete's mental health and wellness concerns and what he believes the school is doing (or not) to help. Repeated "no comments" on the topic from the communications and athletic directors office have Holland questioning the school's efforts to combat mental health issues. In Penn Athletics' 10-page strategic plan for the next five years, mental wellness first shows up on page eight with a "vaguely-worded commitment to making sure student-athletes are 'mentally and emotionally well'." More.  (link)
A majority of the Houston Texans squad took a knee during the national anthem before kick-off with the Seattle Seahawks as they protested comments from earlier in the week by owner McNair. Left tackle & former Virginia Tech student-athlete Brown, "I'm never going to force anybody to do anything that they don't feel comfortable with. I think we all felt the same way on Friday. And as far as the demonstration went, some people didn't feel quite comfortable doing it, some people did. But we all supported each other, and that was what was important. I don't think anyone looks at anyone differently for what they stood for or didn't stand for." (link)
Also Noticed: Ohio State vs. Penn State with the second highest TV rating of the college football season: 6.4 on FOX. Best number ever for a regular season game on FOX. (link); Utah picks Funk & Associates to help find a replacement for departing Prez Pershing. (link); Villanova gets a naming gift for the FB HC position: now called The Thomas and Diane Treacy Endowed Football Head Coach. No financial commitment amount noted. (link); Over the past two weeks several bats have taken up residence in Nevada's Lawlor Events Center, but Dept. of Wildlife officials have advised the Wolf Pack that there is not risk to fans. (link); Southern will rename its Baseball fieldhouse after recently retired longtime HC Cador, now known as the Cador Baseball Operations Center. (link); Facebook and SeatGeek have teamed up to make it possible to buy tickets to an event directly on Facebook, if those tickets are sold by SeatGeek. Guinea pig is the MLS' Sporting KC. (link); We've all seen legendary halftime act Red Panda, but watching NFL personality & former Cal student-athlete Lynch interact with the talented bowl-flipper-on-a-massive-unicycle is "the best thing you'll watch all day" per journalist Hale. (link)
More from current Florida & former Mississippi State AD Stricklin, who had some interesting insights on, "What's it like to move from a Senior Assoc. AD/Deputy AD role into the 'Big Chair?'" Stricklin outlines five specific considerations for leading effectively in such a situation, the first of which is, "...make sure that you understand that it's really important to get advice...you don't instantly have all the answers, even though there's a title next to your name (and) people tend to think you do." Listen to the entire segment to learn more about Scott's first focus & his four other keys. (link) (length - 6:09)
