JOIN THE EUROPEAN ANTIBIOTIC AWARENESS DAY CAMPAIGN!
The European Antibiotic Awareness Day is an annual European public health initiative that takes place on 18 November to raise awareness about the threat of antibiotic resistance to public health and the importance of prudent antibiotic use. The latest data confirms that across the European Union the number of patients infected by resistant bacteria is increasing and that antibiotic resistance is a major threat to public health.
Prudent use of antibiotics can help stop resistant bacteria from developing and help keep antibiotics effective for the use of future generations. As a healthcare professional, what can you do to keep antibiotics working? What can a patient association do to contribute? What can policymakers do at the European level? What can a parent do? Everyone can join the campaign on European Antibiotics Awareness Day - posting their own message, picture or video using the #KeepAntibioticsWorking hashtag. Tell the world what you do, in your professional or personal life, at individual or collective level, to use antibiotics responsibly and #KeepAntibioticsWorking!
And do not forget to attend or follow the livestream of the EAAD launch event, organised by ECDC in coordination with the European Commission in Brussels on 15 November 2017 (09:00 - 13:00).

EHMA AT THE INTERNATIONAL "FROM EUROPEAN TO NATIONAL HEALTH POLICY" IN SOFIA, BULGARIA
On 9-10 October, EHMA Director Dr. Usman Khan, as keynote speaker, attended the 1st International Conference on Public Health "From European to National Health Policy", organised by EHMA Members, the Faculty of Public Health of the Medical University of Sofia, Bulgaria. During his keynote, revolving around the theme 'Making it happen: addressing the implementation gap in European health policy and practice', EHMA Director Dr. Khan tackled the potential gap between the ‘what’ of European health policy and the ‘how’ of practice on the ground at a national level, and whether such a gap could be bridged.
Particular focus was dedicated to five key questions that define this issue:
- Do European and national health policies align?
- Is there a common understanding of what works?
- Do we know how to transfer knowledge on what works?
- Do we know the value of European collaboration in supporting improvement?
- Do we know how to bring this all together?
Following up on his keynote, Dr. Khan also represented EHMA during a National TV debate, where he had the chance to discuss about public health developments in Bulgaria and Europe, together with the Dean of Faculty of Public Health - Medical University of Sofia, Prof. Tzekomir Vodenicharov and with Dr. Katarzyna Czabanowska, Associate Professor at the Department of International Health and Coordinator of the Master of European Public Health at Maastricht University Faculty of Health Medicine and Life Sciences.
