Word from the Director

In November we finally get some cooler temperatures, and with the onset of autumn it is not uncommon for people living away from their home country to feel the tug of homesickness, at times paired with stresses of the upcoming holiday season. Please remember that we are always here for you.

It was a wild October and I want to say thanks to all of you who attended our auction on October 20. It was a great evening and we managed to raise much-needed funds to continue with our work of helping others. To those of you who missed it, I encourage you to make plans to attend next year. I also want to thank our sponsors, and a a very special thank you to Shan Lee and all of the volunteers and staff that helped make the evening such a success.

We have some great tours and classes in November, check out the calendar and register online. Have a great November and enjoy the cooler weather.

A Varied Oil Painting Exhibition by Monika Keating
Monika's love of art began in junior high school and continues to this day. At university, Monika majored in German, but continued to work in watercolor and Chinese ink. Upon graduation, she studied Art History in Munich and traveled throughout Europe, visiting museums and seeing, first hand, the works of 16th - 19th century masters. This trip was an important turning point for her and her art. She decided to change to oil and explains that "A good oil painting will last for centuries and can be transferred from generation to generation." Additionally, painting in oil allows Monika to add layer upon layer, thus producing rich colors in a classic realistic style. Her subjects range from still life to the surreal. She has also illustrated several books.

The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen

The Sympathizer is a sweeping epic of love and betrayal. The narrator, a communist double agent, is a “man of two minds,” a half-French, half-Vietnamese army captain who arranges to come to America after the Fall of Saigon, and while building a new life with other Vietnamese refugees in Los Angeles is secretly reporting back to his communist superiors in Vietnam. The Sympathizer is a blistering exploration of identity and America, a gripping espionage novel, and a powerful story of love and friendship.
