Hello Hub Farmily!

Despite the date on the calendar, it still certainly feels like summer some days out here at the farm! The plants, as well as the farmers, are soaking up the sun during this spring-like weather. Check out what's new over on Milton Road!

Notes from the Garden

Farmers and garden plants alike continue to enjoy the spring-like sunny days, but we still know that winter is coming. We have constructed season extension tunnels to be ready for freezing temps whenever they arrive. We use simple low tunnels that can be constructed with rebar stakes, pvc bent into hoops, 25 foot row covers, and large binder clips to hold the covers to the hoops. This adds a few degrees warmth to the plants at night, blocks the chilly winds, and keeps frost from settling on leaves.

We've been harvesting consistent kale, salad mix, arugula, turnips, radishes, and collards since the beginning of October. Our carrots and beets are growing, with greens reaching about 6 inches high. We hope to harvest them before December. We've also begun excitedly excavating our sweet potato crop with students. They have been in the ground since since June and its always an exciting surprise to see how big they've been growing underground.  The biggest sweet potato we've harvested so far was over 1.5 pounds!

If you're interested in some high-quality sweet potatoes that will be ready just in time for Turkey Day, give us a holler at dpshubfarm@gmail.com to preorder! Suggested donation is $2/pound.

Look at this healthy sweet potato harvest! We've been getting about 40lbs per bed of medium-sized, nutrient-rich, sweet potatoes this fall!

Visitor Spotlight

This week, we hosted our first group from Lakewood Montessori Middle School! We will see each community at Lakewood three times this school year. We'll be spending our time working on seasonal tasks at the farm such as: weeding, planting, harvesting, inoculating mushroom logs, and small building projects. The students will learn more about sustainable agriculture and what it is like to work seasonally on a local farm.
Our next volunteer workday is FULL on Saturday, November 11. We  Please email dpshubfarm@gmail.com to RSVP!

Hope to see you all out at the farm this fall!
