CONCORA's Friends of Bach Serve Up a Baroque Feast Friday, November 3

The Friends of Bach ClavierFest celebrates the keyboard instruments and music of Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries.

HARTFORD AND NEW BRITAIN, CONN. (October 31, 2017) — CONCORA’s Friends of Bach presents the 2017 edition of ClavierFest, a lively concert of keyboard and vocal music by J.S. Bach and his contemporaries.

The concert will take place on Friday, November 3, at 7:30 PM, at Saint Mark the Evangelist Church, 467 Quaker Lane South, West Hartford, Connecticut.

Keyboardists Edward Clark, Christa Rakich, and Stephen Gamboa will be joined by Andrea LeBlanc (transverse flute), Emlyn Ngai (Baroque violin), Alice Robbins (cello), and baritone Jermaine Woodard, Jr., to perform music by Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries.

Highlights of the program include an aria from Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion, performed by CONCORA vocalist Jermaine Woodard, Jr., and the fifth Brandenburg Concerto, performed by the instrumental ensemble. Other featured works include the “King Arthur” suite by Henry Purcell, a flute sonata by George Frederic Handel, and other works by J.S. Bach, his son Johann Christoph Bach, and Friedrich Wilhelm Rust.

The keyboard music will be performed on reproductions of Baroque-period keyboard instruments including harpsichords, organ, lautenwerk (a rarely-heard lute-harpsichord with a unique sound) and clavichord (a small keyboard instrument with a very soft sound). The instruments are hand-crafted by expert makers, with beautiful carvings and painted decorations that enhance the musical experience.

About CONCORA’s Friends of Bach

The Friends of Bach is a volunteer organization whose mission is to support CONCORA’s performances of the works of J.S. Bach and to enhance and inform the audience’s understanding of Bach and his music. Through a series of concerts and fundraising events, and the donations of individual Bach lovers, the Friends of Bach raises funds to underwrite CONCORA’s annual Bach concert. Signature events include the ClavierFest on November 3, 2017, a fall concert featuring music of J.S. Bach and his contemporaries, performed on an array of Baroque keyboard instruments; and Wine, Jazz & Song on January 20, 2018, an elegant evening of fine wines, delectable hor d’oeuvres, and jazz songs and standards from the American Song Book, interpreted by the Sir William Trio and CONCORA vocalists. This season, the Friends of Bach events support CONCORA’ presentation of Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion on Sunday, March 25, 2018, 4:00 PM, at Immanuel Congregational Church 10 Woodland Street, Hartford, CT.

About CONCORA (Connecticut Choral Artists)

CONCORA (Connecticut Choral Artists) holds a unique place as the region’s first professional choir. Now in its 44th season, the ensemble enjoys an extraordinary reputation for artistic excellence throughout New England. Under the direction of Artistic Director Chris Shepard, the ensemble’s versatility is displayed in its wide range of repertoire and in the crafting of select ensembles from among the choir’s roster of singers to produce an extraordinary range of choral color and dynamic range for each program and performance space. CONCORA’s mission statement – “to perpetuate and perform with excellence choral music of the highest quality for the broadest possible audience” – represents a commitment to the Connecticut community and to artistic excellence, masterful performances, and educational enrichment. CONCORA’s educational outreach program includes several highly successful projects. CONCORA extends special invitations to other choruses, especially children’s, high school and college ensembles, as a regular part of its concert programming, particularly the “Extraordinary Concerts,” where the ensemble collaborates with select high school choirs. CONCORA’s Summer Festival offers adult singers from the community and select high school and college singers an opportunity to join with CONCORA in rehearsing and performing great choral works. For children, the CONCORA-to-Go quartet presents an interactive, multicultural program, “Around the World in Music,” performed in area elementary schools and public libraries.
