FEBRUARY 2017
THE FORGOTTEN SOLDIERS

We recently welcomed our PLTJ UK chairlady Maria Teresa on her annual trip to spend some quality time with everyone at Tumaini. During her stay we made a visit to Kibera to visit the Nubian Musician group Safina who partners with us to promote awareness of the Nubians in Kenya, a large number of whom also reside in Isiolo. The Nubian community represent a minority in Isiolo, as they have been unrecognised as Kenyan citizens since independence in 1963 and only accepted in 2011 as the 43rd tribe in Kenya.

While Isiolo boasts a myriad of tribes and cultures, it is dominated by the Borana tribe, where within the same tribe are over 13 different clans all claiming their stake as part of the Borana majority. This tribe has taken over most of the governing seats in Isiolo including that of the County Governor, giving them the power to decide the direction of community development funds. The intention of one leader is easily overwhelmed by the demands and expectations of his own tribe.

The Nubians are struggling to sustain themselves in the face of rapid growth and development. We prioritize such minority communities by involving them in peacebuilding projects and advocacy campaigns. It is our continuing effort to uplift the Nubian culture and keep them relevant in a fast developing Kenya which is still yet to fully recognize the Nubians as Kenyan citizens.

SEGAL PARTNER VISIT

Thank you to Segal Family Foundation for linking us up with Jitegemee, an NGO in Machackos who provide vulnerable children with access to both formal academic learning and vocational training through mentorship projects and sponsorships. The team of Tumaini Directors including our chairlady Maria Teresa from PLTJ UK had a rich learning experience sharing our challenges and best practices with Verity and her team.

We discussed the importance of reuniting children with family members and nurturing a sense of responsibility for both the child and their education by encouraging involvement in project activities. At the same time, also adopting a give and take model for the child which can enable them to earn more self respect while not becoming completely dependent on their ‘sponsors’. The aim is to empower families and individuals to make positive changes in their lives and maximize their potential. We are looking forward to sharing more and welcoming the team from Jitegemee to Tumaini as we work towards increasing the chances of self-reliance for our children.

A SECOND CHANCE

On our trip to Machakos and Kibera we were lucky enough to meet up with Tumaini graduates Wario Yusuf in Machakos & Betty Nyekesa in Kibera. Wario is working as an assistant mechanic and Betty is enjoying the hustle using her skills in painting, hairdressing and cooking - it makes us feel very proud when we see our old pupils all grown up and making it on their own with dignity and self-respect. "

I feel good that I have another chance at life - I am happy." Nyekesa

INVESTING IN THE GIRLS

Tumaini is currently supporting 8 girls through secondary school - all at Lumar Girls school in Meru. We have taken on 5 graduates from Tumaini Senior School all of whom achieved above 270 marks, with Susan Mukiri obtaining an amazing 337 marks out of 500. The girls are looking forward to the challenge as they will be joining us during the holidays and acting as positive role models for their juniors still at Tumaini Senior School. This year we are looking forward to engaging our secondary students in more community outreach work and look forward to exchange projects with with other youth sponsored by Education Is Power (EIP) see on our website to catch up with our girls’ progress.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING FIELD TRIP

During the December holidays Tumaini Senior School students set off to renovate an old house into a new shop for Nelson (a Tumaini graduate) and his uncle in Meru. Nelson had the idea of starting up a small micro-finance business to help generate some income for his family and TSS pupils were excited to go and support his effort by offering up their skills in painting, carpentry, and sign writing.

FIELD OF DREAMS

Field of Dreams: Tumaini Juniors have been enjoying practical lessons in the Tumaini Farm learning about plants and vegetables and how we grow them. The Tumaini garden remains one of the biggest flourishing vegetable farms in Isiolo. Thank you to our gardeners and small hands that help to make it such a rich source of nourishment for both our students and those who are sick at home.

GIFTS OF KINDNESS

We are thankful to Joe Dryer for bringing our first pair of visitors Simon and Pippa Cooper from Lewa who donated smart sports uniforms for the Tumaini Senior School pupils. Thank you as well to our District Commissioner for donating 20 bags of fortified porridge to our school to help tackle the level of malnutrition among our new pupils who have just started the term. We are also very grateful to the Copperthite Family in the US for continuing with their annual tradition of donating new school shoes for our Tumaini Senior School pupils. So many smiling faces & happy hearts. Asante Sana!.
