The KidZania phenomenon

by

Chances are that if it is within striking distance of KidZania in one of the 19 countries in which the brand has now been established, your school has organised a class or year group visit. If you haven’t come across them before, KidZania’s are large interactive activity spaces which extend the idea of role play on a really grand scale, for children up to the age of 14.

Typically, children who visit can choose from up to 60 career roles in a number of different work environments - from banking, theatre and police work to aviation and TV journalism. Children read the news, land aircraft, fight fires, look after patients, fight crime - you get the idea.

What roles do children choose?

One interesting by-product of the KidZania phenomenon is an emerging body of research evidence into the choices made by children who visit, which is beginning to provide new insight into their perception of adult roles, and of those for which they have a preference.

Dr Ger Graus, is KidZania’s Director of Education in London - at Westfield London in Shepherd’s Bush. He and his team have worked with Havas London, to analyse the role choices made by four to fourteen year-olds, noting, for example, which children opt to be pilots and who expresses a preference to be part of the cabin crew; which children get excited about the prospect of being an engineer for the day, and which prefer to imagine themselves as beauticians.

6 Reasons Why Mexico is Safer than You Think
1 January 2017

We occasionally receive questions from people asking about the current situation regarding safety and security in Mexico.  To provide some perspective, listed here are six reasons which demonstrate how Mexico’s drug-related issues, which remain a body of work to address, do not make Mexico wholly unsafe.

Visitor numbers keep rising: The Bank of Mexico is responsible for collating and publishing foreign visitor statistics. The latest figures reveal that over 25 million foreign visitors arrived in Mexico in 2016—continuing the rising trend over the last several years and one of the highest recorded numbers since these records began. Mexico is one of the world’s top-ten most visited nations in the world.  Despite some of the negative news-flow, and especially that around the drug-related violence, people keep coming to Mexico.  Statistics from foreign consulate records consistently show that the overwhelming majority of visits to Mexico are trouble-free.

Mexico is evolving into one of the world’s most important economies. ...

Why every food lover should make the trip to Mexico City

30 January 2017

There's more to Mexico City than guacamole. I got to explore this recently when the Le Meridien Mexico City invited me to come shadow the brand's James Beard award-winning pastry chef, Johnny Iuzzini. He would be visiting from Brooklyn, searching the city for inspiration for his locally-inspired Le Meridien eclair recipe, part of Le Meridien’s Eclair Diaries series. Also in tow was world-renowned coffee connoisseur Esther Maasdam, in charge of training Le Meridien’s food and beverage staff on the art of coffee making and turning them all into Master Baristas (a program by Le Meridien).

Basically, I was in good hands to explore cuisine, coffee and culture in Mexico City...

Mexico City: where to stay, eat, drink and shop
1 February 2017

There are many ways to judge a city. But if you were to do it on “cool” alone — effortless, stylish and brimming with self-confidence — Mexico City would be a firm frontrunner. Known as DF or CDMX by its 22 million inhabitants (abbreviated from District Federale and Ciudad de Mexico), the sprawling metropolis jostles with São Paulo as the de facto capital of Latin America.

With the economy booming, a prosperous and globally orientated younger generation has pumped new life into their city, bringing with them liberal social attitudes and an emphasis on good living. They’ve redrawn the map, too, regenerating many down-at-heel neighbourhoods — with the area around Roma-Condesa taking centre stage as the place they come to play...

Here, young creatives sip cinnamon-infused café de olla on the tree-lined boulevards, switching to mezcal paired with ceviche and Padrón peppers as night draws in. The charm of DF, though, is that despite the arrival of enough exposed brickwork and brushed concrete to make Brooklyn, Berlin or Brixton blush, it has simply filled in the gaps. On every street corner, the mystical, bohemian spirit that drew the...

Weak peso helps Cemex deliver bumper earnings

9 February 2017

First the wall, then the peso – Mexican cement and building materials maker Cemex has enjoyed a boon lately on the back of the fallout from Donald Trump’s presidency. The collapse in the Mexican currency helped propel a tenfold increase in net income last year and Mr Trump’s insistence that he will build a big border wall has pushed Cemex shares to their highest in more than eight years. Net income reached $750m, up from $75m in 2015, and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation rose 15 per cent on a like-for-like basis in 2016. Both EBITDA, and the company’s EBITDA margin, which increased 1.7 percentage points, were the highest achieved since 2007 and 2008 respectively, writes Jude Webber in Miami.

The company, the world’s second-biggest producer of cement and other building materials, has been aggressively selling off non-core ...

Tequila Masters 2017 Results

9 February 2017

As the popularity of Tequila takes off, expectations were higher than ever at this year’s Tequila Masters. A multitude of brands proved they were up to the challenge, offering high quality, drinkability and a point of difference.

For many commentators, Tequila has been the understudy of the spirits world for far too long. Rarely the star of the show, Tequila brands have patiently waited in the wings while their popular rum, gin and Bourbon brethren soak up the spotlight in high-end bars and influential liquor shops – occasionally making a cameo alongside their long-time collaborators, lime and salt.

But the times, they are a changin’. Now, Tequila is the bartender’s darling, and is gaining favour as a classy sipping beverage among consumers – millennials and connoisseurs in particular. Recent insight from market intelligence provider Euromonitor shows that Tequila’s much-touted premiumisation trajectory is well and truly under way – in fact, the category is “throwing down the gauntlet to prestige whiskies, ...

Mexico Raises Key Rate After Inflation Surges and Peso Stumbles
9 February 2017

Mexico’s central bank raised borrowing costs for a fourth straight meeting as President Donald Trump’s election undermined the peso and fuel prices soared, sending inflation spiraling above target.

Banco de Mexico, led by Governor Agustin Carstens, increased the key rate by 50 basis points to 6.25 percent, more than twice the level of December 2015. Nineteen of 26 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg had forecast the half-point increase, six expected a quarter-point hike and one projected no change. The peso erased losses and strengthened 0.5 percent to 20.3777 pesos at 1:24 p.m. in Mexico City...

Mexico’s economy is facing the prospect of low growth and high inflation thanks in part to Trump’s threats to...

Tequila Billionaires Win Big After Cuervo IPO
9 February 2017

Juan Francisco Beckmann Vidal and Juan Domingo Beckmann -- the heirs to the family that controls tequila giant Jose Cuervo -- are seeing their net worth soar a day after the company carried out Mexico’s biggest IPO in more than three years.

Their combined wealth now totals about $5.9 billion, compared with Bloomberg’s estimate of $3.4 billion prior to the share sale. The surge also reflects a jump in Cuervo’s stock price of as much as 8.8 percent on Thursday, the day after the world’s biggest tequila maker sold about $790 million of shares. The distiller’s $6.3 billion valuation would make it one of the 20 biggest companies on Mexico’s benchmark stock gauge if it were on the index.

The Beckmanns have capitalized on investors’ bullish view of the Mexico City-based company despite growing tensions over trade between Mexico and the U.S. in the wake of President Donald Trump’s election. Cuervo has been able to overcome concerns about a possible border tax and a weakening Mexican currency because it gets more than 60 percent of its revenue from the U.S. and Canada while the bulk of its costs are in pesos...

Mexico central bank lifts benchmark rate to 6.25%

9 February 2017

Mexico’s central bank increased its key lending rate on Thursday as expected by 50 basis points to 6.25 per cent after January inflation jumped to an 18-year high, fuelled by a sharp rise in gasoline prices. It was the sixth time in a row that the Bank of Mexico has pushed up borrowing costs by half a point in a bid to cool inflation and prevent the peso – which has weakened around 12 per cent since Donald Trump’s election as US president – from piling further pressure on prices, writes Jude Webber in Miami. Mexico’s state statistics office earlier on Thursday reported a higher-than-expected 1.7 per cent rise in consumer prices in January, reflecting the government’s decision to end regulated fuel prices. That pushed the annual inflation rate to 4.72 per cent – well outside the central bank’s target of 3 per cent, plus or minus 1 percentage point...

Las (malas) prácticas en reaseguro
10 February 2017.

UK set to receive first LNG import from Peru

10 February 2017

The UK is set to import its first ever cargo of liquefied natural gas from Peru as a pricing dispute forces shipments to Europe, with growing supplies of the supercooled fuel carving out new export routes. Peru LNG loaded a vessel this week that has its destination listed as the UK, according to data on Lima-based Perupetro’s website. It is carrying about 61,146 metric tonnes of LNG. The shipment comes as growing supplies of LNG, which are set to expand by almost 50 per cent between 2015 and 2020, press prices and make it more competitive against coal and other power sources. Royal Dutch Shell, which has a 100 per cent offtake agreement with Peru LNG, has had to divert supplies away from Mexico as lower international prices have provoked a price dispute between the two...

Pacto de Bréxico
13 February 2017
