Assembly this Sunday!

Sunday February 12th, 10:30AM
The Arts Center
300-G East Main St. Carrboro NC 27510

This month's speaker will be Nicole Pynaker, a corporate accountant, half-marathon runner, and nursing student. She'll be speaking about setting goals, prioritizing, and being fiscally responsible. This assembly was moved to February due to inclement weather on January 8th - we'll be belatedly celebrating the new year and Sunday Assembly Chapel Hill's second birthday. We'll also be celebrating all of the progress we've made in the past year, and planning how to make 2017 even better. Please join us! You can RSVP on Meetup or Facebook.

Kids' Activities Survey

We're having discussions about childrens' activities for the next year, and we want your input, whether or not you bring kids to assemblies! We're weighing the benefits of having more formal kids' activities, vs. having kids participate in the assembly proper. Please give us your input by filling out the brief survey here.

Birthday Bags

At this assembly we will be collecting materials for birthday bags for the Interfaith Council. Birthday bags consist of some combination of a gift bag, cake mix, frosting, birthday candles (no matches please), and a birthday card (either purchased or homemade). These will be distributed through the food pantry to children who have a birthday but whose families are unable to afford a cake.

Music for Sunday

We've assembled this handy YouTube playlist with the songs for our next assembly:
1. Eye of the Tiger (Survivor)
2. I Lived (OneRepublic)
3. Count on Me (Bruno Mars)
4. I Can See Clearly Now (Johnny Nash)

Upcoming Events

  • Wednesday, Feb 22nd, 7pm - Conversation Group: At our first meeting, we hammered out some good topics to dig into in the future. For this meeting, we'll be starting with this question: "What ways of thinking about ethical questions are available to me, beyond traditional religious moral structure?" This will be a good, low-pressure venue to delve into complex topics and get to know your fellow assembliers better.
  • Sunday, Feb 26th, 1pm - Family Board Game Afternoon: Adults and (accompanied) kids of all ages are welcome! Bring your favorite game and/or a snack to share.
  • Saturday, April 1st, 10am - Volunteering at the NC Diaper Bank: This is a great family-friendly volunteering opportunity. Children of all ages are welcome. We'll be sorting and packaging diapers that have been donated. This requires a couple hours of standing, and some light manual labor.

A sneak peak at upcoming assemblies!

  • March 12th - the topic of this assembly will be Love & Acceptance. Two board members of PFLAG Triangle will be speaking about their organization, and their experience as parents.
  • April 9th - Rob Wall, director of the North Carolina Commission of Racial and Ethnic Disparities in the Criminal Justice System (NC-CRED), will be giving a presentation on implicit bias and structural racism, and their impact on the criminal justice system. We'll be following this assembly with a workshop for anyone who wants to spend more time exploring these important topics.
  • May 14th - This will be our annual Mother's Day celebration. We won't have a speaker; instead we'll have more readings and songs from our members. We'll celebrate the families that make Sunday Assembly an inclusive multi-generational community.

Help Out!

Want to help out your assembly? Let us know! You can reply to this email to get in touch with the organizational team. We can use help with the following:

  • Ideas for speakers, readings, or songs - the organizing team are happy to find speakers, readings, moments of science, or themes for an assembly, but we're even happier to include your ideas. The more voices that are heard on stage, the better!
  • Hosts, readers, or singers - make your voices heard in a very literal way by getting up on stage. Don't worry, Sunday Assembly members make the most supportive audience ever!
  • Greeters or welcomers - we can always use help getting people oriented when they come in. We also like to have designated people to introduce themselves to newcomers and help them feel welcomed.
  • Setup or breakdown volunteers - those chairs won't unfold themselves!
  • Snack-bringers - bring along something healthy and/or tasty to share with everyone.
