WINTER FIRE SCIENCE EVENTS
Burning Issues Workshop
In Sickness and In Health: Addressing Tough Decisions In Applying Fire to Degraded Habitats and Declining Species in the 21st Century”

March 1-2, 2017 @ Fort Custer Training Center, Augusta, MI

Registration is open now through February 24.

This wildland fire workshop is designed to provide land managers, researchers, resource specialists, biologists, ecologists and fire practitioners an opportunity to hear and learn from fire management experts with many different perspectives. The format is designed to identify and address gaps in knowledge and communication, and work toward solutions to issues that complicate our collective wildland fire work.

Wisconsin Winter Fire Workshop

Nearly 100 participants attended this one day event in central Wisconsin on Jan. 31.

Check out a few snapshots from the talks.
Wisconsin DNR research scientist Nathan Holoubek provided an update on a new project evaluating the effects of burn timing (spring, summer, or fall burning) on successfully meeting objectives for brush control.
TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

Wisconsin: April 14-May 2, 2017

The Nature Conservancy, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the US Fish and Wildlife Service are now accepting applications to attend their Spring Prescribed Fire Training Exchanges (WI-TREX). Applications must be completed by February 24, 2017.

Participants at this event will be able to work on a range of skills and qualifications including Burn Boss (RXB2), Firing Boss (FIRB), and more.

These trainings are organized as an incident, using the Incident Command System. Participants will:
  • serve in qualified and trainee firefighting positions on a burn team
  • assist with preparing, scouting, briefing, igniting, holding, mop-up, and patrol on numerous controlled burns in the area
  • complete pre- and post-fire monitoring
  • train with various equipment
  • practice fireline leadership skills, and
  • learn about local fire ecology and management.
There will be field trips to areas burned in recent fires and presentations from local partners and other community members, scientists, land managers and fire practitioners.

If you have any questions about the training contact Eric Mark.

Northeast Oklahoma: March 13-17, 2017

Visit the Great Plains Fire Science Exchange for more information and to register.

In the field, hands-on training in prescribed fire planning, preparation and implementation, along with classroom sessions on fire ecology and fireline communications, will combine to form a busy week for participants in this first TREX (training exchange) ever for Oklahoma. We will be burning on several sites in an oak-pine ecosystem in northeast Oklahoma.

This training is for all interested fire practitioners and no NWCG certification is necessary to participate. College students, private landowners, tribal members, and fire fighters who are interested in learning more about utilizing prescribed fire as a land management tool are all welcome. Registration for this training is limited to 20 people.

FIRE EFFECTS INFORMATION SYSTEM:
Species Reviews and Fire Regime Syntheses
FEIS ecologists write syntheses about fire effects on individual species and about fire regimes in the United States to help managers, planners, and scientists find, read, and use the best available science.

During the
recent FEIS webinar series, the most frequently asked question was, “How do you decide what syntheses to write and update?” One way that they decide what to write is based upon manager requests. They would like to know what Species Reviews and Fire Regime Syntheses are most needed in your area.

Please
email ecologist Ilana Abrahamson with your suggestions.
