Alibaba Signs MoU with GS1 Australia for the Benefit of Australian Businesses


GS1 Australia, 9 January 2017 

According to GS1 Australia, on Friday 6 January 2017, Alibaba Group (Australia and New Zealand) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GS1 Australia to formalise, promote and strengthen online trade between China and Australia. Alibaba invited brand owners to adopt GS1 standards for product information management and the use of the barcode, or Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), for uniquely identifying their products within the Alibaba e-commerce network. With the cooperation between Alibaba and GS1 Australia, Chinese consumers will be able to get information in Chinese by mobile phones through a traceability mechanism, to scan barcode and receive product data, about Australian premium brands, and shop online.

...In the first three quarters of 2016, as tariffs were cut, the value of Australian exports to China at least doubled for products including fresh cherries, fresh and chilled abalone, and unwrought zinc. Over the same period, export values of fresh table grapes jumped six-fold to $102 million, exports of medicaments for therapeutic use grew more than 90 per cent to $523 million, milk powder exports grew almost 80 per cent to $127 million, bottled wine exports grew more than 40 per cent to $309 million, fresh navel orange exports grew 55 per cent to $51 million, and fresh cheese exports grew 28 per cent to $33 million.

USA, Canada and Russia to Benefit from Large Reduction of Import Tariff Rates by China on Seafood

According to the Ministry of Finance, China will adjust import tariff rates for some commodities from 1 January 2017. Those include tunas, prawns, lobsters, and crabs. As production resources in China are limited, import tariff rates have been further reduced to satisfy consumers’ choices. The seafood that are most relevant to tariff reductions are wild-caught. Among the Most Favoured Nations (MFN), USA, Canada and Russia will benefit the most from the reductions. South-east Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China are equally focused on aquaculture, with similar farmed species, and so competitors to each other. For example, China and ASEAN countries attach high importance to prawn farming. In recent years, Vietnam’s farmed Basa have had large exports to Chinese market, and made great impacts on Chinese Tilapia.

With Tax on Takeaways Confirmed at 6%, Chinese Catering Industry Enjoy Tax Reductions

On 21 December 2016, the Chinese Ministry of Finance, and the State Administration of Taxation announced in their Circular No. 140-2016 that the VAT for takeaways would be levied at 6%. This is another breakthrough made by the Chinese Cuisine Association (CCA) in reduction of taxes and fees for catering industry. Since the replacement of the Business Tax with VAT by the Chinese Government on 1 May 2016, the tax burdens on catering industry have been lightened. However, in the meantime, there were discussions on whether to adopt 6%, 17% or other tax rates on takeaways.

Notice by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to Restore Order for Internet Connection Service Market

On 22 January 2017, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) circulated its notice that from the notice date to 31 March 2018, the MIIT would restore order for internet connection service market. All internet services such as IDC, ISP, CDN, and VPN are required to have the pre-approval from the government to operate. According to the MIIT, foreign trade enterprises, transnational enterprises, which need cross-border internet connection through special line for their own business purpose, may apply to the Chinese telecommunication authorities for the lease of services. The requirements in the notice will not make any impacts on the normal operation of business by the enterprises.

Global Organizations, Banks Upbeat on China Growth Prospects

The world's second largest economy reported 6.7 percent GDP growth in 2016, the lowest level in nearly three decades, but the rate is likely to top all other major economies, according to a report released Jan. 16 by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). With the global economy facing uncertainties like trade protectionism, IMF last week revised its China's growth forecast for 2017 to 6.5 percent, from the 6.2-percent projection last October, based on expectations of continued policy support for the economy.

Seafood Leaders React after Trump Kills TPP

The withdrawal is a “great thing for the American worker,” Trump said at the signing of his first executive order as President. TPP, which includes 12 other nations, was not voted on in the last Congressional session, so the U.S. was not yet part of the agreement that was expected to increase U.S. seafood imports from Vietnam and other countries.

Internet matching service to search for safe and high-quality Japanese agricultural and food products

The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) set up a new page—the Japan Agricultural & Foodstuff Exports (JAFEX)—within our international business matching site: Trade Tie-up Promotion Program (TTPP).

JAFEX is a new service to search for various Japanese agricultural, forestry, fishery and food products ranging from rice and fishery products to vegetables. Users can easily get in touch with Japanese business operators through searches based on user information or sales offers by product. Those interested in importing Japanese products can also advertise what they are searching for in the purchase offer section toward Japanese producers, shippers and food companies. The service is available free of charge, both in English and Japanese.

Chemicals exceeding standards again are detected at new site of fish market in Toyosu

An amount of benzene 79 times the maximum allowed was detected among other toxic chemicals in groundwater samples gathered late last year from the new site at Toyosu, where the famous Tsukiji fish market is to be relocated, Tokyo Metropolitan Government officials said Saturday.

Prices of fish, prawns go up by up to 50% ahead of Chinese New Year

SINGAPORE - Prices of fish and prawns have skyrocketed by as much as 50 per cent ahead of Chinese New Year, and could go up even more, with Chinese silver pomfret and white-spotted rabbitfish seeing the steepest price hike so far.

Fishmongers from two wet markets in Toa Payoh and Eunos said the prices of fish and prawns had begun to soar, and would continue to rise as the Lunar New Year nears, Lianhe Wanbao said in a report on Friday (Jan 6).
