Back to the Roots replaces Kellogg's in NYC Public Schools

The New York City public school system - the nation's largest school system, with 254,000 students who eat free breakfast - has updated their breakfast options by replacing two breakfast cereals made by Kellogg's with cereals made by Back to the Roots.

The schools opted to buy Back to the Roots cereals "because of their better nutritional profile, their organic ingredients and their lower sugar content." For example, "one 28-gram serving of Back to the Roots Cinnamon Clusters has half as much sugar as the same amount of Kellogg’s Frosted Mini-Wheats. The Kellogg's product is made of five ingredients, including the preservatives butylated hydroxytoluene and gelatin. The Back to the Roots cereal has just four ingredients, no preservatives, and no added vitamins."

As the NYTimes writes, this is "one of the biggest signs to date of the inroads that small food companies are making into the mainstream." This reflects a major trend we're focused on at RSV: consumption moving away from Big Food and CPG towards brands that better reflect and express the values of today's consumer for healthy and wholesome products.
