Why the 50 Is Not Just the 50
By Darryl Johnson & the coaching team at Up Coaching

“I’m just doing the 50.” “I’m not mad enough to try and run 100km.” “I’m not ready for 100km.”
Just a few of the responses us UTA50 runners give when asked which event we are doing. We are our biggest critic. Nobody told you it was “just 50km” and I’d bet there are plenty who thought you were “mad” when you told them you had signed up for a 50km race through the upper reaches of the Blue Mountains.  The 50 is never just the 50, the question you need to ask yourself is, “Am I ready for the 50?!”

The UTA50 is a course I would describe as relentless – there is no free ride on this monster. Something triggered you to sign up, pay your entry fee and commit to the taking on stairs – up and down, hills – up and down, technical single track, exposed rugged open ground, stairs, fire trail, a bit of road here and there and more stairs! The 50 throws just about every trail challenge at you and all in “just 50km!” That moment you signed up was pivotal in your mental preparation for the iconic UTA50. You had the gall to enter, now to prime your engine to get it done. The 50 is never just the 50... Read more HERE

There is always a big focus on getting your ‘race nutrition’ ready for the big day, and practicing it thoroughly during your training runs. But one thing most people do not understand, or take into enough consideration, is the management of their race day hydration! Nutrition (fuel for your energy systems) and hydration products can be treated as two separate things, although you can find and use products that cover both. For the purpose of this article I will be primarily discussing hydration.
Read about the main points to remember when planning your training and race day hydration strategy HERE

SELECTING YOUR START GROUP!

In this video Kerry and Ali from our official training partner Squadrun offer an entertaining explanation of the importance of start groups and how to select the most appropriate start group for the UTA100 and UTA50.

If you don't have any ITRA points, a start group qualifying race result or a road marathon or half-marathon result but you don't want to be assigned to the last start group, please as a minimum, consider running a half-marathon or marathon road race by 17th March 2017. With nothing else to go by, this can be used as a good guideline to predict your finish time in UTA100 or UTA50 and hence to be able to seed you into the most suitable start group. We would love to get you into the start group that is suitable but we need an idea of your running performance. For UTA50, you also have the option to complete a Strava segment on Leg 2 of the 50km course.

As well as being highly entertaining, Kerry and Ali are two of the most enthusiastic and hard working coaches around, running the biggest coach-lead running community in Australasia! If you want to find out what they are all about, at the moment you can get a $30 four-week trial of coaching by SQUADRUN to kick-start your training for UTA-2017.
