New 1.Question Interview (below): David Sayler / Athletic Director / Miami (OH) (part I)
The Las Vegas Sun's Grimala goes in on the AD search at UNLV, notes this is Prez Jessup's first big hire for athletics, plus the presence of former Rebels AD Livengood as a consultant with Todd Turner's Collegiate Sports Associates makes things interesting. "The firm will probably target athletic directors at smaller schools looking to move up, as well as administrators at bigger programs who would be interested in running their own programs. Candidates also could come from outside of college athletics, such as professional sports executives or management types with business and marketing backgrounds." Fundraising, budget improvement & putting more butts in seats all at the top of the list with the longterm goal of 'Power 5' membership. A leader with experience "carving out a distinct fan base" against other entertainment & sports options could find him or herself in demand. (link)
Per the Atlantic 10, St. Bonaventure's students prematurely rushing the court prior to time expiring on Saturday versus VCU wasn't exactly the reason why a technical foul was called, allowing the Rams to send the game to OT & eventually winning. More precisely, it was a security guard grabbing the ball, causing the VCU in-bounder to have to chase after him, as well as a student running into one of the officials, that resulted in the 'T.' Also, "As a result of this misrepresentation of the administrative technical foul assessed to St. Bonaventure, which reflected poorly on the SBU student body, the officiating crew will be disciplined for not immediately stopping the game for disruption of play." Bonnies AD Kenney notes his team will continue to review the situation & make sure game ops are executed more effectively in the future. HC Schmidt explains his post-game comments, wants SBU students & supporters to understand his team should expect to win games like Saturday's. (link)
Middle Tennessee AD Massaro with a lengthy Q&A, starts with the notable success for his MBB & WBB programs, "...being high-profile like basketball is, it gives you a chance to grab national attention. That's really a great thing for us." Academic achievement starts with HCs, plus, "Everybody is a stakeholder in this. Everybody pulls their share. We're seeing results year after year, and now it's embedded in our culture. That's a very good thing." Notes the reality of playing more FB guarantee games is a result of needing to buoy the bottom line, focus on "home game revenues" is still top of mind everyday, a FB operations facility could be on the horizon & FB's success helps every other sport in the Blue Raiders portfolio, doesn't think fans want to see less plays in a FB game despite length concerns, argues that negative discussion around C-USA's new TV deal is overblown as key exposure is up & there's optimism in going to market for the next partnership, more. (link)
Florida State boss Wilcox does the same with FSView & Florida Flambeau. On a question of if he has the most well-rounded department in the nation, "I would like to think so because everybody in this department, all of our coaches and student athletes believe that as well. They want to have the greatest experience that they possibly can, win championships and build relationships for life. You have to if you want to be successful and that is our overall shared goal. For this reason, we have the ability and desire for every single one of our programs to be competing for ACC titles and National Championships on an annual basis. Similarly, when we have success across the board with our various sports, teams feed off one another. That is a good and positive thing which helps us be successful across the board." (link)
Iowa ended FY16 in the red by $2.9M with down FB ticket sales & up FB expenses pointed to as the culprits. Specifically, the Hawkeyes did $19.5M in FB tix for the '15 season against $21.8M in '14, plus an increase of $2.1M for "coaching salaries, bonuses and benefits" was partially due to FB's high-flying Rose Bowl campaign & extra scratch earned by the staff, including $1M for HC Ferentz. Comparatively, the deficit for FY15 was $3.24M. Asst. AD for Athletic Communications Roe expects a balanced budget moving forward. Elsewhere around the state in FY16, Iowa State produced a $76K surplus & Northern Iowa lost $765K. Not nearly as much detail on outcomes for the Cyclones & Panthers. (link)
Northwestern Kellogg School of Management Clinical Professor of Innovation & Entrepreneurship Walcott for Harvard Business Review, "Leading People Too Smart to Be Led."  If your organization or team is full of super creative, highly capable individuals, here are some suggestions on how to effectively lead: 1) See yourself as "a colonel with an army of generals" ("Humility is an essential prerequisite for a leader who’s in the middle of a maelstrom of talent."); 2) Don't valorize failure ("It might make a provocative slogan, but few brilliant people are really motivated by the prospect of failing."); 3) Encourage smart recklessness ("People sometimes overprepare to avoid embarrassment, and most institutions are designed to eschew such concepts. But in these embryonic ideas might lie greatness."); 4) The organization should be a crucible, not a crib ("Encouraging rigorous, constructive debate is indispensable to navigating challenges of high uncertainty, from extending the bounds of knowledge to scaling a business."); 5) Search for "stupid" practices as much as you seek best practices ("After all, stupidity is at the heart of why and how things go wrong."); and, 6) Persist ("On days when nothing is going right, and even Management 101 seems to be failing, focus on persistence. If the vision and purpose are sound, you may just get further than you thought you could.") (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Alaska Dispatch News looks at the many paths taken by its in-state high school FB student-athletes to make it to DI programs, anything from the normal HS to college route to the transferring to a HS out of state to gain more exposure. Fresh off National Signing Day, at least a dozen Alaskans signed to play at lower college levels (DII to NAIA) and a handful will play at the likes of New Mexico State, TCU, USC and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Running back Falaniko, who will play at South Dakota: "It's been great. It's all been very fast. I've seen a lot of shocked faces when I say I'm from Alaska. I just try to get after it every day. I'm a dude from Alaska." (link)

With prospective student-athlete background checks a hot topic, Oklahoma State's process is detailed by OColly.com & comes with a useful flowchart on steps taken if there's any concerns in the recruiting process. "If the search does not reveal 'serious misconduct' but contains another cause for concern, Senior Assoc. AD & Legal Counsel Meyer presents info to AD Holder & the team's coach. They determine whether they will continue recruiting the athlete." If the decision is made to continue the recruiting process, "Holder appoints a committee of people outside of [the] athletic department with approval of the President's office to review the case. Committee determines whether OSU continues to recruit athletes." Senior Assoc. AD for Communications Klintworth: "It’s like so many things in athletics: It’s new. It’s still evolving. It’ll probably be different three years from now than what it is now. I think that’s probably safe to say." More. (link)
Illinois AD Whitman commented on the future of Illini FB during last week's National Signing Day festivities. "I know what a difference a year makes. Just about 50 weeks ago, I was standing on this same stage with this same microphone at the end of our whirlwind arrival. You all remember the first couple days on the job what happened. Things have never really stopped since then. […] This thing is just about ready to take off. […] I am so excited about the future of the program, knowing we have someone with his [HC Smith] integrity, his values, the leadership he is providing to our student-athletes, to our staff, to our athletic department. It makes all the difference." (link)
CBS Sports' Norlander writes: "No matter what NCAA says, Jim Boeheim now has 1,000 wins and everybody knows it." Norlander thinks the NCAA was right to punish the Syracuse MBB program based off the results of its probe, but he argues that vacating 101 wins was a "hollow" punishment: "...vacating victories has always been hollow discipline, a puny punitive calculation that's mocked by everyone outside the NCAA. You can't Men-in-Black mind-erase what happened. The public record will account for Boeheim's true win total now and when he retires, even if Syracuse's and the NCAA's official record books can't indicate otherwise." (link)
Arizona State's potential joining of hands with the NHL's Coyotes & bring the team to Tempe is no longer a thing. Back in November, the Coyotes & the university entered into an "exclusive negotiating agreement" on a facility solution, but nothing has come to fruition. ASU "has no intention of proceeding to sign a development agreement or an option to lease or any other agreement with the Coyotes." Coyotes Prez LeBlanc, "It appears the ASU deal will not be moving forward," but wants to keep the team in Arizona. (link)
The Waco Tribune's Campbell, "Baylor has had many very good sports information directors; Nick Joos was one of the best." Campbell, on the outgoing BU Executive Assoc. AD, who is headed to Missouri, "...he provided the strategies that helped increase net ticket revenues from $5.6 million to $14.3 million in 2016; registered nine consecutive years of football season ticket sale increases, with record sale increases the last four seasons, and among other noteworthy accomplishments he created the first-ever college basketball game to be played on the grounds of Fort Hood, the world’s largest U.S. Army post at Killeen. […] And to repeat myself, Nick Joos was a friend, an accomplished athletic executive and one of the most gifted athletic department people I’ve ever been around in 65 years of covering athletic events. He leaves big shoes to fill." (link)
As part of Rivalry Week programming, ESPN's College GameDay will make its first ever visit to McKeon Pavilion this weekend as Saint Mary’s hosts Gonzaga in a clash of the WCC's two best. The occasion marks the first Gaels-Zags match-up to be featured, but it will be the fifth appearance overall for GU, who is, of course, currently ranked #1 in the nation. (link)
North Carolina MBB HC Williams & his squad defeated Notre Dame yesterday afternoon in a relocated matchup in Greensboro & he took the opportunity to espouse on HB2. "I’m glad that some people in Greensboro got to see us play. I’m glad we were able to take a game here because of that stupid rule that we have in our state that took a lot of good opportunities for people in our state, a lot of great athletes who like to do things in our state. I shouldn’t say rule, it’s a law. Law is more important than a rule, I guess. It's just that it’s ridiculous and what it’s doing to our state and the reputation of our state. […] Playing here in Greensboro, I was really mad. Period, the end. I wanted to play in the Smith Center. But I trust our people. Right now, everything’s cool in Chapel Hill again – restaurants are open, people can go to the bathroom, all kinds of stuff. They can go to any bathroom they want to in Chapel Hill, I believe so." (link)
Maybe slightly tongue-in-cheek, Georgia Tech MBB HC Pastner says he was told during his interview process with Yellow Jackets leaders, "We need a coach in here right now, he's not going to win a game his first year in the ACC. And if you do win one game, you should get Coach of the Year." Former Tech & current Purdue AD Bobinski: "As many coaches do, I think he's taking a bit of poetic license there, to say the least. [...] I never put numbers to it, I just would never do that." (link)
Cal State Fullerton's student newspaper explores the possibility of the university bringing back the football program 25 years after it was cut due to poor performance on the field and financial difficulties centering around low attendance numbers. There are several challenges involved with bringing back football, including the likely expansion of Titan Stadium, the need for additional facility upgrades, and Title IX requirements. Senior Assoc. AD DiTolla: "It comes up every year because every year in August when football is starting to cook, we get phone calls and all that type of stuff and we visit it and we look at what we have. We evaluate our five-year rolling plan and at this point, it’s just not on our five-year rolling plan unless we we’re able to get additional resources to accommodate it." (link)
Seems like appropriate timing for this one: With her Dad winning his record fifth Super Bowl as a head coach last night, second-year Holy Cross WLAX HC Belichick talks in a profile piece about how she ended up going into the family business of coaching even though that was not initially in her plans after graduating from college. "My intention was never to follow in his footsteps. And yet, somehow I kind of have." (link)
Around Higher Ed: R. William Funk & Associates eponymous Prez discusses the senior admin search process, such as the one it will soon undertake for chancellor at Kansas, noting that 90% of his firm's recs are academics, as "nontraditional candidates tend to fall short sometimes" on questions of shared governance. Much more, including the need for a keen understanding of Athletics for the most high-profile of university leadership spots. (link); Notre Dame received a $25M gift for the construction of a six-story, 100K-sq ft building adjacent to Notre Dame Stadium that will also house a stadium entrance & donor hosting space on FB game days. (link); Clemson extended the contract of Prez Clements through 2/2/22 at the same annual salary of $801,330, with 39% paid by the state and the remainder by the CU Foundation. (link); With Mount St. Mary's kicking of its search for a permanent Prez, current interim Prez Trainor, who has been in the position for two years, announced he hopes to remain on full-time (link); University of Alaska system Prez Johnsen faces a vote of no confidence today from the Faculty Senate at Alaska Fairbanks (link); Purdue Prez Daniels has offered "concierge-level service" to Saint Joseph's College (DII) students in good standing who are interested in transferring following the announcement that SJC will suspend operations after the spring semester (link); Here's a look at 2015 to 2016 endowment value changes for individual institutions around the nation. (link)
Also Noticed: There may not be a new boss for Disney anytime soon as reports are hitting the wire early this morning that CEO Iger may extend his tenure for a third time. (link); Kentucky FB regularly runs an ad during local Super Bowl coverage. Here's the LI version. (link); If you missed any of the SB commercials, they're all here via the first link. The second, via Cynopsis Sports, indicates Anheuser Busch's spot had the greatest "share of voice." (link, link); @FoxSportsPR will be the first with Super Bowl TV ratings data today. (link); Unreal win probability chart & swing from last night. (link); Lady Gaga. (link); Of note on the UNC-ND MBB game in Greensboro, "Officially neutral for NCAA/RPI purposes, Greensboro Coliseum considered "semi-home" for UNC by @kenpomeroy, same as ACC tourney games here." (link)

Miami (OH)'s $80M 'Graduating Champions' fundraising campaign is the center point of this 1.Q with Redhawks AD David Sayler. That's our goal."
