Wild Zambezi has some useful travel advice if you are planning an extended trip through the Zambezi Valley areas in Zimbabwe - from Victoria Falls, through Binga/Chizarira, Lake Kariba, Chirundu, Mana Pools and beyond.

MARINELAND UPDATE: HOUSEBOAT SPECIALS AND ADVICE ON PRE-ORDERING DRINKS

With the bustle of the festive season having passed, Marineland Harbour has some fantastic special deals on houseboat charters at the moment.  So, if you are not confined by school holiday dates - take advantage of these!

There are many good reasons for enjoying a houseboat trip on Lake Kariba at this time of year.  The weather is hot, but pleasantly cooled with the rain.  The landscapes and sunsets are phenomenal (better than at any other time of year).  The creeks and bays of the Matusadona National Park are relatively deserted of other boats.  Peace and tranquility prevail, and you have the wildlife and the fishing to yourselves!

Also, with the recent rains, the lake water level has started to rise, and fishing has improved.  Marineland reports that for the first time in years they have come across banks of healthy looking oxygen weed in the Gache Gache river basin.  This has not been seen  for some time as the low lake level appears to have had a negative effect on the oxygen weed. Also of note is the fact that between bream catches we caught  many small tiger fish which looks promising in that there has obviously been a reasonable breeding season.

Marineland supplies drinks, fuel, ice, gas, oils, fishing blocks and worms, and their well-stocked harbour shop has many other "last-minute" commodities required by people going on a houseboat or fishing trip.   They have swipe card facilities both in the shop and reception, as well as on the fuel jetty for the convenience of visiting clients and boat owners.

Order your drinks in advance - this is a hugely convenient service!
Remember that Marineland supplies a wide range of drinks (and ice) at competitive prices.  Avoid carting bulky drinks supplies in your vehicle.  The most convenient thing to do is to pre-order from Marineland (orders@marineland.co.zw).  Prices are competitive. and drinks can be purchased on a "sale or return" basis.  Alex will send you a comprehensive list from which to choose.   You complete the order form.  An invoice will be sent to you which you can either pre-pay or pay on arrival.  The drinks (and anything else ordered in advance) will be ready loaded onto your houseboat for your arrival.   Unused drinks (provided the packs are unopened) can be returned and a refund provided.   How easy is that?

AT LAST SOME GREAT KARIBA FISHING! @ SPURWING ISLAND

After the dismally disappointing catches at last year's Kariba Invitation Tigerfishing Tournament, it is heartening to hear some good news on that front from Spurwing Island!   Here's what they say in their latest newsletter:-

If you were not at Spurwing this fishing season you should have been!  Fishing hotted up and the fishing in the Sanayti Gorge has been some of the best in years, with a variety of fish being caught. Join us for a weekend of fishing; may it be a father-son weekend or a weekend away with the boys or even just to get away!

We might just take them up on that!

Spurwing Island, which overlooks the Matusadona National Park, has long been a popular and relaxed destination for family holidays, weddings and special occasions.  The resort caters for up to 40 guests in chalets, cabins and tents all overlooking Lake Kariba.  Guests can bring their own boats or hire one with a driver/guide for fishing and game viewing.   Guided game drives and walks in the Matusadona National Park are also on offer.

BUMI HILLS : NEW FLIGHT LINK WITH KARIBA AND AN UPGRADE PLANNED

With the take-over of Bumi Hills Safari Lodge by African Bush Camps, changes are in the air (in more ways that one!).

A new airlink ($90 one-way) has been introduced linking Bumi Hills with Kariba (or vice versa).  The service will be run by African Bush Camps' transport and transfers sister company Safari Logistics, and will be a scenic and quick (20 minutes across the lake) alternative to the boat transfer, which usually takes an hour and a half, depending on the season.   This will be very convenient for weekend visitors who want to maximise on their holiday time.  It will also be a useful and flexible option for travellers who want to link to or from other destinations like Victoria Falls, Mana Pools or Harare.

African Bush Camps have also announced that they are planning a refurbishment of the Bumi Hills Safari Lodge property that will bring it in line with the rest of their portfolio offering authentic safari experiences in wilderness areas.

RARE BIRDING AND WILDLIFE DELIGHTS WITH ANDREW SMITH SAFARIS

Wild Zambezi is delighted to share these wonderful images of rare sightings taken by Andrew Smith Safaris while on safari during 2016!   Andrew who is a highly qualified, professional guide offers environmentally ethical, photographic adventures in the African wilderness, including the Zambezi Valley where, if you are extremely lucky (and have an expert guide), you can photograph (from left to right) -  an African Pitta; a Red-throated Twinspot; a pangolin and a pair of cheetah brothers!

GREEN AND MUDDY MANA POOLS!
Mana Pools has at last had a good season of rain after many years of drought.  This has brought life-giving lush, green vegetation back to the floodplain, along with an extremely muddy environment!   Most of the smaller roads are impassible, and adventurous self-drive visitors should be warned that even the "main" access road into the Park is difficult in some places.   Extreme caution should be exercised when crossing bridges and drifts, as there can be washaways and collapses.

Our thanks to ZimParks Warden, Zacharia Nyakomba, in Mana, for sharing the delightful image (above left) of a group of hunting lionesses with cubs, taken just near the Nyamepi Parks Offices!  Very muddy cats!    Also thanks to Bushlife Safaris who continue to maintain a presence at their Vundu Camp during the rainy season (despite very challenging conditions - see below) in order to undertake the very important  anti-poaching work being achieved by their Bushlife Support Unit.  The image of the elephant (above right), gorging on the new season's grass, was taken by Bushlife.  One VERY happy ele!

In their latest newsletter, Bushlife Safaris tell us that they have recorded approximately 350mm of rain in Mana Pools during this season!  Flooding and overflowing rivers are making getting around quite difficult.  Anti-poaching rangers have been experiencing problems on the road where they can get stuck with their vehicles for a couple of days, with water levels reaching up to 1.5m!   Although the picture at left was taken in March 2016, the Bushlife teams have not even able to attempt cross at this particular point this year, as the river is much higher!

It has been fun and games at Vundu Camp for Henry, who is in charge of the anti-poaching activities.  A pride of lions took up residence with him in the camp over the holiday season, and would just not leave!   More recently, the nearby pan overflowed and came streaming through the kitchen!

Despite all this, Bushlife have been continuing to work on the camp maintenance during the annual shut down.  Destructive baboons had damaged the thach of the main lodge and camp rooms, and this is being repaired by a thatcher.   They have also had a carpenter fixing the wooden poles that have been attacked by termites.    Although only officially opening in May this year, the camp has started to take bookings for April, and any early bird guests should get in touch.

MAVURADONHA WILDERNESS NOW PROTECTED AS A NATIONAL MONUMENT!

One of the Zambezi Valley's lesser-known gems is the Mavhuradonha Wilderness Area in the Zambezi escarpment mountains of northern Zimbabwe, between Centenary and Muzarabani.  Self-drivers and locals may be  familiar with this beautiful, rugged place, but many have never heard of it.

Twenty-odd years ago, it was designated as the very first comunity-based Wilderness Area in Africa.  But in the intervening years, there have been many threats to its natural beauty, including rampant wildlife poaching and uncontrolled mining activities.

Now, however, thanks to the efforts of some dedicated conservationists, community leaders, historians and tourism operators, the Mavuradonha Wilderness Area has finally achieving legal protection as a National Monument of Zimbabwe, because of its historical and cultural significance!

The new status was granted by the Zimbabwe Government in January 2017, along with nine other sites of historical and cultural importance. They now fall under the direct supervision of the National Museums and Monument Zimbabwe (NMMZ) and are protected by law which requires everyone to respect the values that the monuments stand for.

The Mavuradonha Wilderness is one of the last intact pristine wilderness areas remaining in Zimbabwe, with some amazing six hundred square kilometers of savannah woodland and the spectacular scenery of the Zambezi Escarpment. The area contains various species of wildlife, including elephants and has excellent examples of San rock art, and numerous historical and cutural sites, including the nearby ruins of Mutota's Kraal.

There are a couple of options for tourism within the Mavuradonha, but in recent years it has attracted little attention from visitors.  However, it is hoped that the new designation will re-kindle interest in its extraordinary natural, scenic, historic and cultural values.
VICTORIA FALLS

WILD ZAMBEZI WELCOMES THE STANLEY & LIVINGSTONE SAFARI LODGE AND URSULA'S CAMP

Wild Zambezi is delighted to welcome to our travel network the luxurious 32-bed Stanley & Livingstone Safari Lodge and its more intimate, 8-bed little sister, Ursula's Camp.

Both these properties are located approximately 15km from Victoria Falls, and benefit from a tranquil, wild setting within the extensive Victoria Falls Private Game Reserve.   Here you can combine a Big 5 Safari experience with all the sites and adventure activities of the Victoria Falls itself.

The Stanley & Livingstone Safari Lodge (above) has 16 elegant and luxurious suites (one a honeymoon suite) with a top class restaurant, bar, sun lounge, sundeck terrace and swimming pool.  These all all overlook a natural waterhole which attracts the resident wildlife of the Nature Reserve.  It consistently earns accolades for best lodge, restaurant, hospitality and service in Victoria Falls and proudly takes its place amongst the finest hotels in Africa.

Ursula's Camp (above), also situated within the Victoria Falls Private Game Reserve, is much smaller, with four en-suite chalet units.  This is a more relaxed and informal environment, perfectly suited to families and small groups looking to book the entire camp.

RAINY SEASON VICTORIA FALLS..... WATER, WATER, EVERYWHERE!

The Victoria Falls area has received wonderful amounts of rain lately!   Reports are that the river levels are the highest they've been for 10 years!   And with this abundance of rain, a number of spectacular mini-waterfalls have suddenly appeared!

One has recently formed right next to the platform from which Wild Horizons launch their Gorge Swing activity (see above left)! The picture was taken from their Lookout Café perched right on the edge of the Batoka Gorge just downstream from the Victoria Falls Bridge (which you can see in the background).

The image on the right shows another one falling into the Zambezi River Gorge along the white-water rafting route above rapid 17. This waterfall is commonly known as "double trouble" for those intrepid adventurers keen to test their adrenalin surges during the high waters of the rainy season!  (See info below.)

WILD HORIZONS - HIGH WATER RAFTING ONLY
With the Zambezi's current water levels rising during the region's rainy season, Victoria Falls tour operators Wild Horizons are now offering only High Water Rafting in the Gorges below the Falls.  This will will continue to run until such time as the river levels dictate that rafting closes altogether.
High Water Rafting is operated between rapids #11 to #24 between 7:30am to 2:00p.m with lunch being served at the top of the gorge at Rapid #23.  The briefing location is the Lookout Café.

MULTI-DAY RAFTING TRIPS IN OCTOBER 2017

THE BOMA REFRESHES ITS BITE!

One of the "must-do"  experiences in Victoria Falls, The Boma – Dinner & Drum Show, has been officially re-launched with a facelift.

In addition to its name change (it was previously known as The Boma Place of Eating), it has refreshed and modernised its food and entertainment elements.  Now, in its 25th year, the popular dinner/entertainment combo has hosted more than one million guests (61,000 in 2016 alone!)

The Boma tells the story of the food and culture of Zimbabwe, and the changes effected have been about making it more on trend, more contemporary, but without losing its traditional feel.  There is a new Head Chef (Brighton Nekatambe - pictured above left with his culinary team), and the menu has been fine-tuned under the guidance of South African celebrity chef Arnold Tanzer.

The Boma offers a delicious four-course meal, made up of starters, soup from the campfire, a braai (barbecue) buffet, featuring Zimbabwean delicacies such as mopane worms, warthog steak and Zambezi bream, as well as vegetarian dishes, and desserts.

A shared starter platter (pictured left) featuring peppered impala, smoked crocodile tail, vegetable samoosas and nyimo bean fritters has now been introduced, along with new salads, dressings and meat marinades.

A drum painting corner has been introduced (see above right), where, guests, armed with a paintbrush and under a tutor’s guidance, may design and paint their own drum, map, bowl or other memorabilia, as a souvenir of their Boma experience. In addition, a photo booth has also been installed on arrival at The Boma, allowing guests to capture that moment.

The utterly compelling interactive drumming experience remains the highlight of a Boma evening, while work has been done to enhance the artistic showmanship of the entertainers.  There have also been changes to the decor, a new branded Boma bus and new kitchen equipment introduced.

Are you one of the lucky people who has experienced The Boma Dinner & Drum Show?  If so, tell us about it HERE.
