UPCOMING EVENTS

Dear colleagues,

I would like to let you know that on 01 March 2017 I will be leaving Greater Manchester Academic Health Science Network (GM AHSN) to undertake a secondment as the AHSN National Coordinating Director.

This is a newly created position, working with the 15 Academic Health Science Networks, that has been established to work at national level with all Academic Health Science Networks. The main purpose of this role is to support all AHSNs in expediting the realisation of adoption and spread of innovation across England, liaise with key NHS England stakeholders and funding bodies, and lead the performance reporting function. It has been a difficult decision for me, to even temporarily step away from GM AHSN. However, this is a fantastic opportunity & it enables me to operate and influence the innovation space on a national footprint while advancing the AHSN reputation and agenda on behalf of all 15 Academic Health Science Networks.

Although the post is predominantly based in London, I will be retaining a desk in Manchester, so you will no doubt still see me around occasionally.

Interim Arrangements have been agreed and I am delighted to confirm that Amanda Risino will take on the role as Acting Managing Director. Amanda is an inspirational leader with a wealth of experience in health and social care and will undoubtedly ensure that we continue to successfully deliver against our objectives, and further develop and strengthen collaborative relationships with all our members.

After returning from maternity leave, Amanda took up the joint post of Director of Knowsley Integrated Provider Services across health and social care, leading one of the country’s most successful integrated provider arms.  Following Transforming community services lead the successful transfer and integration of the entire integrated provider into 5 boroughs mental health foundation trust. After two years she moved to Warrington and Halton Hospitals Foundation trust where she held the post of Associate Director for a further two years. Before joining GM AHSN as Chief Operations Officer in November 2016, she held senior positions at St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Warrington Health and Social Care Economy.

Value of Academic Health Science Networks referenced in government strategy document

The government has recently published its Building our Industrial Strategy: green paper. The document looks at addressing the UK economies long term challenges and sets out our approach to build a modern industrial strategy. Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs) have been mentioned under health to support the adoption of innovation and local health economies, highlighting our value and role within the health sector. The Green Paper is a public consultation and the government is encouraging every sector of industry, businesses of every size and individuals to give their comments and views.

Patient Safety Resources

We want to share with you some helpful material produced as part of the national programme of patient safety work commissioned by NHS Improvement from AHSNs nationally. The links below lead to work undertaken in the West of England & now adopted across a number of their hospitals. The work relates to the deteriorating patient and in particular use of the Emergency Department Safety checklist.

Please use as freely as you wish. We know it isn’t an easy proposition to implement when your hospitals are in black escalation, but it's great when it's already in place when winter comes. We have clinical leads and an improvement lead who can talk to people about it and we can run master classes with notice.
