A Teach-In on the U.S. and the World: Immigration and Trade

   Call for Proposals

The University Center for International Studies (UCIS) and its constituent centers are organizing a Teach-In on Saturday, February 11, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The purpose of the Teach-In is to provide students and staff at the University of Pittsburgh with a forum to better understand the new administration's Executive Orders related to immigration and national security, their historical context, their implications, and the public and global response to them.  It will be open to all students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the University of Pittsburgh.

We are seeking faculty members who are interested in leading a 25-30-minute session on any topic related to this larger theme.  We especially encourage the creation of sessions that will facilitate discussion on the topic, not necessarily 25 minute lectures.  Team-taught sessions of either 25 or 50 minutes are welcome.

Suggested topics may include (but are not limited to):
·         What would it mean to "build the wall"
·         Immigration policy and national security
·         Global response: a historical survey of the impact of mass demonstrations
·         Refugee policy and the Geneva Convention
·         The Syrian War: a primer
·         American business and immigration policy: economic implications
·         European Responses to Immigration: A Comparison
·         US Immigration Policy - a historical survey
·         Strength in Diversity? Discussions of race, ethnicity, and immigration
·         Trade policy and its relationship to foreign policy and immigration policy

UCIS invites faculty with an interest in participating in the Teach-In to submit a brief statement of interest that includes your name, department, email address, title and 1-2 sentence description of your proposed topic, availability on 2/11/17 during the timeframe given above, and any requested additional technology resources (limited availability, optional).  Due to the necessarily short organization time, we ask that proposals be made by Tuesday, February 7th, though late proposals will also be considered if space allows.

Proposals will be reviewed by the Directors of the international and area studies centers at UCIS and will be selected based upon relevance to the theme, compatibility with other suggested topics, and availability of space.  Topics will be paired into 50 minute blocks; a schedule featuring all sessions will be available to all participants. We look forward to reading your proposals and to seeing you at the Teach-In.

Sponsored by: The Office of the Director at the University Center for International Studies, the Office of International Services, the Study Abroad Office, the African Studies Program, the Asian Studies Center, the European Studies Center, the Global Studies Center, and the Center for Russian and East European Studies

Deadline for expression of interest: Tuesday, February 7, 2017

If you have questions about the event, or would like to submit a proposal, please contact Angelina Cotler at a-cotler@pitt.edu

‘Unveiling the Wall’ immigration law event slated for Feb. 10

The ACBA Hispanic Attorneys Committee and the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will present “Unveiling the Wall: A Fresh Look at the State of U.S. Immigration Law” on Friday, Feb. 10, at 5 p.m. in the Koppers Building Conference Center. President Donald Trump’s proposed “border wall” is just one of several items contained in his recent executive orders that are immediately affecting the current state of U.S. immigration law. What is expected to happen in sanctuary cities as a result? How will “catch and release” tactics and a new definition of “criminal alien” change enforcement policies and practices? How might Trump’s policies and promises affect local businesses and the previous administration’s efforts to attract international entrepreneurs to the U.S.? These and other related topics will be discussed in the non-CLE event. There is no charge to attend the program; registration is requested, but not required.  To register: https://www.acba.org/CLE-Events/Event-Info/sessionaltcd/CSD170210_HISPANIC

Latino Family Center (5450 Second Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15207) on Thursday February 9th from 11 am to noon.
We will be coming with a group of Doctors from Children’s Hospital and we will be talking about Influenza and Influenza vaccination.  While we have already given some presentations about influenza a the LFC, we feel that there is a very much need to address this topic again as we are seen many cases of influenza and many children (some of them Latino children) who are still unvaccinated against influenza this season. Some of the topics that will be cover in this presentation include the differences between influenza a the common cold or a URI and everything that you can do to prevent getting a respiratory infection and in particular influenza during the winter, the importance of receiving the vaccine and that this season 2016 - 2017 the recommendation is to only use the injectable vaccine (flu mist is not longer recommended by the AAP).

Everybody is welcome to attend to this presentation, there is no need to RSVP. The presentation will be both in English and in Spanish.

Runaway Slave Communities. Colloquium and Special Issue
Afro-Hispanic Review Special Issue Call for Papers:

This special interdisciplinary issue of the Afro-Hispanic Review examines maroon communities in Latin America to reassess the concept of “maroonage,” escaping slavery, negotiation with slave-based and racist systems, and resistance against oppression from colonial times to the context of our globalized world. The issue celebrates UNESCO’s designation of 2015-2024 as the Decade of the Afrodescendant, bringing together representatives and works from various regions of Latin America. Editor William Luis and Guest Editors John Maddox and Graciela Maglia invite submissions of articles (20-30 pages, 2016 MLA Style [8th ed.]) by 1 August 2017. III Congreso Internacional Vallejo Siempre 2018
Salamanca, 25-28 Junio 2018
