A Great BIG thank you!!
Our December Holiday Luncheon was a great success and a lot of fun, thanks to several of our members who had a role. Several members hosted tables, and a couple of our Board Members organized a lot of fun holiday-themed games. The tables were decorated beautifully, and hostesses provided nice gifts for each of the women at their tables. Thank you so much for sponsoring tables and all of your effort to help make our party such a great event!

This month and always...
Take Heart
This month we tend focus on love and the emotions that come from the “heart.” But this article is about what it means to “take heart” and be courageous. We often think of courage as a large act of bravery—such as stepping into harm’s way to save another. What we don’t think about is that we all have so many opportunities to display courage through small acts in our everyday lives—we have those moments of truth daily.

Living a life of integrity takes real courage. Doing the right thing is often not easy and requires us to take responsibility for our actions and words, even when doing so might damage careers or friendships. Owning your deeds, the good and the bad, requires a strong heart. Speaking up for what is right, especially when you are the first, is tough and challenges the strongest of us. Take heart, stand up for what you know is right and display your moral courage.

Daring to pursue your dreams might mean risking your finances, your existing career, or even picking up and moving. These are all major life events that are never taken lightly, but involve faith, fortitude and most importantly, courage. While very frightening to go boldly forth, without the risk taken, the dreams will stay just that, dreams never realized. Challenge your comfort zone and step out of it! Find the courage within to live your dreams.

“No” might be the hardest word for us to say as successful women. We feel like we have to be all things to all people—and handle everything that comes our way. If we say no, we fear that we are disappointing others and possibly even failing. But “no” is sometimes the right answer for so many reasons. Saying no allows us to set boundaries and be successful at the things we agree to do. Have the courage to accept you are not perfect or super woman and graciously decline the things you just can’t do or know you can’t do well.

Opening up to others and letting the walls down may be one of the hardest things we do because it opens us up to being hurt and probably makes us feel the most vulnerable of anything we do... but it is also the most rewarding. Without the courage to expose our true selves, we could never form meaningful relationships in our lives. Connecting with others allows us to be better partners, friends, and leaders. Brene Brown said “Vulnerability is our most accurate measurement of courage.”

And last but not least, to persevere through whatever trials we face is true courage. The strength to overcome adversity and not give up, to keep hope and positivity alive, to confront each challenge with confidence—here is where you personal courage really shows.
So this month, and all that follow, TAKE HEART and be courageous women!

“Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.’” ~ Mary Anne Radmacher

Vesta Wells Johnson
Meet Vesta Wells Johnson:
My life has 4 stages.

The first 20 plus years were spent in Rapid City. The usual school stuff...cheerleading, music, drama. My family consisted of my mom, older sister and brother.

The second stage began at 23 when I met my future husband during a 3-day snowstorm at the Holiday Inn which led to my career in the music business. After 5 years of traveling with my band, we settled in Sioux Falls, operated the largest recording studio in South Dakota and raised our 2 daughters, Jessica and Amanda.

Another 20 years pass and a new chapter began when I moved back to Rapid City and married my husband Tim. Our time was marked by numerous very long motorcycle trips all across the country and helping to raise our 2 grandsons. I opened my own business a year after moving back and am still going strong. Creative Digital Replication makes CDs and DVDs and transfers VHS, record albums, and cassette tapes to new media. I began getting very involved with our community... an LRC graduate serving 7 years on the board, 5 years on the Women's Network Board, 7 years on the Rapid City Concert Association board, 6 years on the Women's Career and Leadership Initiative board and others. I became involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters 16 years ago.

Sadly, the 4th stage began just a few months ago when my husband passed away. I am now getting used to a new reality. I will continue my volunteer work and will focus on completing my 3rd CD which will be jazz/blues. My 2 other CDs, "Songs My Mother Loved" and "The Moon Is Hiding" can be viewed on my website VestaWellsJohnsonMusic.com.

Women's Network has been a part of my life for 16 years and will continue to be a big party of my continuing story.
