Can you believe we are already in the month of February? As we continue through our founding year, we continue to feel such joy and gratitude for the opportunity to do this work in a community we love with kids and families that we love. We know that great kids know other great kids. As we begin to work on our expansion efforts to 7th-10th grade next year, we welcome you to recommend any of your close friends and family members to complete a 2017-2018 Student Application. Additionally, we will be looking to expand our Founding Staff--recommend any teachers you know to apply to join this amazing group of people. There are lots of amazing events on the horizon for family and kids--hope to see you in the school soon!
Love,
Ms. Kirley
SPOTLIGHT
In December, Steel City Academy announced our partnership with New Horizons Inc, a Gary based family support agency. In our mission to provide boundless opportunities to our students, we recognize the need to for a continuum of social-emotional support for students and families. Ms. Claude Ann Poupolos--affectionately known as Ms. P--is our school based social worker. This Gary native brings knowledge of our community, and her professional expertise to our school. We are fortunate to have her join our team, to provide confidential 1:1 and family counseling. If you would like to learn more about how this partnership will be serving our students and families, do not hesitate to call (219.750.1010) or e-mail Ms. Poupolos.
Clockwise Left to Right: Squads Get Competitive & Show Out with Holiday Helpers
We set a goal of 500 non-perishable items to help feed families in Northwest Indiana this holiday season, and we easily exceeded that. EVERY squad contributed to the overall school total of 683 cans! There are two squads that dominated on the leaderboard, Alcorn State University (ASU), and Indiana University. ASU collected over half of the food items for Grade 9, and Indiana amassed over 30% of ALL donations. Special shoutout to Ms. Wells and Coach Kelly. #RegionMatters#Power
Winter Quarter Gear & Flame Week was Pretty Awesome
In what may be their first and last victory, Staff (ages 25 and better) closed out our inaugural basketball season by defeating students 40-36. A huge thank you to our coaching and athletic staff that made the first season of Flame and Lady Flame Basketball possible.
Steel City Academy is growing! We have opened enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year. If you know a student who deserves boundless opportunities, check out the application process, and apply today!
