#100DaysOfResistance

A Message from NWPC-CA President, Karen Humphrey

On behalf of the 2017-18 board of the National Women’s Political Caucus of California, I’m happy to report that we’re getting off to a good start in the next election cycle that will take us to the 2018 California state elections as well as the midterm Congressional races.

Thanks partly to the amazing Women’s March on Washington—and Sacramento, and LA, and San Jose, and many other California cities—we have shaken off the post-election depression and committed ourselves to resist—not just the misogynistic, racist and regressive policies of the Trump administration but any effort at any level of government to roll back the gains women and many other Americans have made over the past few decades.  If you haven’t quite gotten out of the doldrums, I encourage you, first, to join your NWPC sisters and expand your involvement because we’re going to get a lot of good women elected over the next two years.  And if you’re not a member, become one today!

Please be sure your chapter’s board representative knows what you think we should be doing at our monthly board meetings or conference calls.  The meetings are open to all members—you should consider joining one of them—and even running for a board position.

While it’s easy to be discouraged by what’s going on, I choose to see it as a momentary setback for a movement toward a fair and just society where all are treated equitably.  And it’s a reminder that freedom and justice are not “free”—they require constant citizenship from people like us.

FYI, if you want to reach me, please email me at president@nwpcca.org.  I will try to get back to you ASAP. We have a lot to do in the coming months and I look forward to our working together for progressive women!

ENDORSEMENT UPDATE

Right off the bat, we have two great women to support, both of whom have been strongly endorsed by NWPC-CA:  former State Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin is running for Governor in 2018; and former Emerge California Executive Director Kimberly Ellis is fighting to become the first African-American and only the third woman ever to serve as chair of the California Democratic Party in an election this May.  If you are a party delegate, or if you know people who are, please support these two fierce warriors for Californians. Both have websites where you can learn the great qualities they bring to the seats they are seeking—they are highly qualified feminist women, not good old boys!

volunteer for our issues task force!

One specific task we’re recruiting for:  NWPC has six bottom line issues.  We are seeking at least six people who would work with the board to track both state and federal legislation related to these bottom line issues and provide recommendations to the board for supporting or opposing policy proposals.  If you are interested in this project, please email us.

One more thing for you to do as a California member—please recruit your friends to join NWPC.  Our membership has fallen in recent years—we need an infusion, and the best member recruiting is done by other members!  We need to beef up our numbers and raise our voices so we can be heard in the most remote parts of this great nation. It's easy to join just send them to this link: http://nwpcca.org/get-involved/join-nwpc/
