Earth Day Celebration

Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 22, to join Lakewood's annual Earth Day Celebration! Here's a sneak peek at what you can expect at this year's event:
  • Live music from local artists Rob Drabkin, A Mac DZ, and Avenhart
  • Beer garden
  • Food trucks
  • Free fitness classes
  • Compost and seed starting demonstrations
  • Climbing wall
  • Interactive art
  • Free bicycle valet
  • More coming!
We are still looking for eco-friendly artists, organizations and businesses to participate as vendors for the day. Consider sharing your sustainability mission with the community by applying at Lakewood.org/EarthDay. Vendors must demonstrate how their products, services and resources can help residents lower their eco-footprint.

The Earth Day Celebration is a free community event organized by the Employees' Committee for a Sustainable Lakewood as a way to spread environmental awareness and celebrate our community.

Nominate Your Green Hero!

There's one month left to nominate your green hero for Lakewood's 10th annual Sustainability Awards. Do you know someone who has gone above and beyond this past year to make Lakewood a more sustainable community? We want to hear about it!

Past winners include innovative aquaponics projects, school environmental education efforts, green building developments, community food rescue programs and more. Awards are given in the categories of community sustainability, youth leadership and City of Lakewood employees. The deadline for nominations is March 13. For more information and to submit a nomination online, visit Lakewood.org/SustainabilityAwards.

Now Accepting Applications for New Sustainable Neighborhoods

Join the ranks of Lakewood neighborhoods that have started a healthy food movement with their residents, ramped up energy conservation in their homes, adopted water-wise and pollinator friendly landscaping and gathered over potlucks and leaf composting to make their neighborhoods more sustainable. Applications for the program are due March 6 and can be viewed at SustainableNeighborhoodNetwork.org/Lakewood.

Urban Agriculture Internship Opening

Do you have experience with urban farming and an interest in learning more? The Jefferson Conservation District is hiring four interns this summer to support their Urban Agriculture Program. The internship will involve assisting urban producers with various tasks, as well as developing educational demonstrations, workshops and other outreach programs. Applications are due March 1, 2017. To learn more about the application process visit JeffersonConservationDistrict.org/Employment.

Greening the Green

Last summer, Lakewood's golf courses launched a compost collection program in their kitchens. The Den at Fox Hollow and the Homestead Grill Restaurant have added compost dumpsters for all food scraps and compostable dishware, saving hundreds pound of materials from the landfill every year. The new program made it possible for our Community Resources Department 2016 holiday party to divert 99% of the waste from landfills!

Is your business interested in starting a compost program or hosting a zero waste-event? Visit www.lakewood.org/zerowastetools for resources to get you started or email sustainability@lakewood.org with questions.
