Right onto my news now - As I write this it’s the last day of school holidays for my son Tom, with Lara going back on Thursday. I so wish I could freeze time and keep my kids home, I always grieve the start of the school year. It’s great for my writing to have a quiet house, but I would take pressure to write around kids and have them home any day!

We had a beautiful summer holiday, lots and lots of time spent at the beach and relaxing with friends.

In the middle of it all I finished the big edit on BEAUTIFUL MESSY LOVE and it’s in the hands of my amazing publisher Mary who now has the unenviable job of going through it  literally line by line to make sure it is all above board and suggesting changes everywhere it can be improved for the copy edit. It’s a huge job for her and I plan to keep a low profile for the next few weeks and try not to annoy her as she will probably want to kill me anyway at the number of flaws she finds in my edited version. (I write a lot of crap, I truly do – thank God for good editors.)

I had a blip at the start of the year with lots of pain in my mouth that was misdiagnosed as an infected wisdom tooth. I was getting pretty bad as it went on undiagnosed but in the end, getting no joy from the dentist who didn’t relieve my pain at all, I went to my beautiful GP Christina and she diagnosed Trigeminal Neuralgia, a nerve disease and prescribed the right medication which helped enormously. It’s actually triggered a whole new lifestyle change for me, it was a huge wake up call to have a nerve condition brought on by stress and not looking after myself. Next month I’ll share with you all the changes I’ve made so if you’re someone who feels stressed and anxious or can’t sleep well, the changes I’ve made may help you too.

Once the kids are back at school, I’ll be writing draft one of my third book LOVE AND OTHER BATTLES – I’m equal parts terrified and excited to be diving into a world of all new characters. I named them all this week so that’s a start!

I had a lovely night last night at Subiaco library meeting readers, talking to them about my book and my author journey and signing books. I wanted to share with you all how gorgeous my readers are - it really touches me when people make the effort to send me photos or email/Facebook/Tweet me after events. Because it was only last night that I spoke, these messages of support just came in. I'm so lucky, thank you lovely ladies.  Looking forward to the next library talk and meeting more readers in Armadale next week.
I also went to a wonderful book club this month, so different to any I have attended before. If you missed it on Facebook page, here’s what I wrote about the night and if you click the image below you'll see the video of their stunning singing!

Meet the Perth Literary Singers Book Club!
This inspirational group of women have a lifelong friendship from when they were all Sweet Adeline Chorus singers. Their genuine love for one another and enduring friendship - the kind where they could all finish each other's sentences and where they took pride in bragging about one another - touched my heart.
Each and every one of them shared her extraordinary life journey with me and I honestly got enough juicy fodder for five books from one night!
Plus they had a kind of flea market book swap the likes of which I've never seen before and a Christmas worthy feast of food!
AND they just happen to be international award winning singers and I was lucky enough to have them sing three songs for me. Take a listen (apologies for the dodgy dark video quality)
I've been to many a book club as a guest but this was something else :) Thank you amazing Chorus ladies, oh what a night xx

Well folks, that’s all my news for this month. I hope you enjoy the newsletter. Next month when I write to you again I will hopefully have made a big start on the new book and can share more about it.

Lots of love and take care,
Tess xx

January Newsletter subscriber winners:
Bella and Reg jewellery and accessories

I have decided that every month this year, I will buy my subscriber gifts from Australian small family-owned businesses or Australian fair trade charities. That way, as well as rewarding my lovely followers with monthly prize draws and gorgeous prizes, I can do my bit to help promote Aussies who are brave enough to have a small business in these very tough times. I hope you support these small businesses and charities throughout the year too, especially when you see how gorgeous the prizes are!

First up for January is Bianca Plunkett Gooley’s Bella & Reg:

Bella & Reg was created by an Aussie mum and my gorgeous friend, Bianca, who's a breast cancer survivor. Bianca makes jewellery to raise money for people in need to pay forward the kindness shown to her when she was ill. How amazing is that? I went on a manic Bella & Reg online shopping spree and I want to share my bounty of Bianca's beautiful products with you guys.

Congratulations to the three prize winners, selected at random:
- earrings and two magnets – Toni Wilson
- pendant and two magnets – Tracey Turner
- magnetic giant paperclips and two magnets – Nicky Dux

For the entire month of February, Bianca is offering a free gift with every purchase. You can check out the beautiful range by clicking here:
Bella & Reg

I was interviewed by Alicia Gaffney and she brought out my naughtiness :)

This interview inspired me to write a long and heartfelt post about the biggest mistakes I made as an author (that you’ll find further down in my writing tips section) because the very lovely South Australian author Alicia Gaffney asked me what the ten hardest lessons I learned since becoming a writer were. You’ll also discover why monkeys terrify me, why I've dumped Orlando Bloom for Zac Efron as my leading man and lots more in my final interview for the next six months. I hope it gives you a good laugh -

Meredith Whitford – my manuscript assessor is in the building people!

Lots and LOTS of writers have asked me who my manuscript assessor was - the one I rave about at every author talk, the one I wrote about in WRITING THE DREAM and the one I called my guardian angel in the acknowledgements of LOVE AT FIRST FLIGHT. Well, it's this gorgeous lady right here, Meredith Whitford of Between Us Manuscript Assessments.

Meredith believed in me from the very beginning. When I sent her a piece of drivel that was fifty thousand words long, she saw the potential and she worked super hard with me to help me transform it into a book worthy of submitting to agents and publishers.

I'm thrilled to announce that after taking some years off to write, the manuscript assessor who took this wannabe nobody to best-selling author is back!

You can find her here - get in quick, I have a feeling after this email goes out, she will be overrun:

Bonus Writing Tip - Resources for writers by Jennifer Frost:

The lovely Jennifer Frost has some great writing resources I’d like to share with you too. Hope you find her grammar checker useful and her amazing infographic on 222 words to use instead of said.

I would like to put my own little disclaimer in here that this list is great for adding more depth and colour to dialogue when you want to break up the monotony of the word ‘said’, but that for me personally, I use ‘said’ a great deal or have no speech tag at all as I find it easier to read that way. I think these words are great for occasional use though!

Authors A La Carte!

Spiri Tzintsaris - Yemista:

It's the first Authors a la Carte for the year and it's a ripper! If you like Mediterranean food, you'll love this authentic Greek family recipe from the very gorgeous Spiri Tzintsiras - delicious roasted vegetables stuffed with rice called 'Yemista' that my family ate for three days after I baked it!

My first conversation with Spiri when I met her was about food, she runs a blog called The Tribal Tomato and her wonderful novel AFTERNOONS IN ITHAKA has a traditional Greek recipe in every chapter. (I LOVED this book, LOVED IT!!) We even text each other photos of our own food so a more apt author for Authors a la Carte there has never been!

If you want to make easy and nutritious Yemista for yourself or your family, or if you'd like to find out more about my beautiful friend Spiri, here's the link to the recipe:

Book Review: THE FLORENTINE BRIDGE: Vanessa Carnevale

I’m more excited about the books I have lined for my book club this year than ever before, and you all know how OTT I was about the books from the last two years! What I love about this year’s chosen books for my monthly book club is how many of them are debut authors – so much fresh talent! Some are authors who are already established overseas but are debuting in Australia or breaking into a new genre. And one are two are authors you all already know and love in among the newbie authors. I have lots of fascinating author interviews coming your way and just as many fabulous books to share with you  in 2017. I read A LOT of books so I choose my book club picks of the month very carefully – my book club is me sharing with you the books I think are the best of the best. So sit back, relax and soak up some amazing new reads!

I’m kicking off the year with a beautiful love story set in one of my favourite parts of the world and written by one of the dearest people in my life – so this book was not a hard sell for me!! I’m thrilled to introduce you all to beautiful debut author Vanessa Carnevale and her stunning novel THE FLORENTINE BRIDGE. When this book was released we had a couple of days where it was delayed here in Perth and I busted my way into a book shop begging for them to unload it for me just so I could get my hands on it – AFTER I had already read it as an advance copy! I have also bought copies for several friends because I think it’s a gorgeous holiday read – love, scenery, art – perfection. I hope you enjoy my review of THE FLORENTINE BRIDGE and my interview with the lovely Vanessa.

Very soon on my Facebook author page will be your chance to win a personally signed copy of THE FLORENTINE BRIDGE that Vanessa will send out to you, so make sure you keep your eye out for it and enter to win!

Blurb:

Full of heart and hope, The Florentine Bridge is a tear-jerking read for those looking for an Under the Tuscan Sun-inspired setting.

Nineteen-year-old aspiring artist Mia Moretti has been cancer free for nine months. Her battle with the illness has taken its toll on her, leaving her severely depressed and tormented by an overwhelming fear of dying. Inspired to make a fresh start, Mia decides to move to Tuscany to pursue a simpler life where she can, with any luck, find the motivation she needs to paint again.

What she doesn’t count on is meeting Luca, a handsome Italian mechanic who sweeps her off her feet. As Mia slowly lets down her walls and allows Luca in, her passion for life is reignited, and her new perspective begins to inspire her art. But just when she’s ready to let go of her past, a tragedy dredges up all the anxieties she’s worked so hard to overcome and threatens her budding relationship with Luca.

My review:

A beautiful, deeply emotional read that will leave you thinking about the characters long after you've finished reading. Vanessa Carnevale's debut is a stunning story of love, fear, loss and hope set against a backdrop of Tuscany that's so vividly brought to life, you can almost taste the grapes. The love story is tender and romantic and a slow burn that pulls you in deeper and deeper as the book goes on - I love how loveable Mia and Luca are in their openness and vulnerability with each other and with the reader too. Mia's internal narrative is incredibly raw and at times heartbreaking but I think this is what makes her such a memorable character. I felt as if I knew her like a dear friend. As far as a classic romance goes, the kind that makes you swoon and cry and hold your breath - it doesn't get much better than The Florentine Bridge. Absolutely beautiful! Under the Tuscan Sun but so much better.

About Vanessa:

Vanessa Carnevale is an author and freelance writer based in Melbourne, Australia, where she lives with her husband and two children.

In her early twenties, Vanessa spent several years living in Florence, Italy, where she met her husband and discovered a love of travel and la dolce vita. She now considers Italy her second home. The Florentine Bridge is her first novel.

You can connect with Vanessa at
www.vanessacarnevale.com and she's also on Facebook, Twitter,  Instagram, and Pinterest - social media queen this chick is!

An interview with Vanessa Carnevale:

Can you tell us briefly about your book?
The Florentine Bridge is a love story set in Tuscany about a young Australian artist by the name of Mia, who is in remission from cancer and is trying to find her motivation to paint again after going through her treatment. Despite the all clear, her perspective on life has changed and this has also influenced her art and motivation to paint. So when an opportunity to travel to Tuscany presents itself she takes it. It’s an emotional story filled with drama but balanced with lots of light as we follow Mia’s journey back to herself as she falls in love with the heroine of the story, Luca, and life throws them some pretty big challenges to overcome both as a couple and individuals.

Which Hollywood stars would you like to see play the lead roles in the movie version of your book?
Ooh, fun question! I think Lucy Hale would be great as Mia, and as for Luca, I’ve spent time trawling the internet but have no idea! Suggestions? I think Emma Stone would make a perfect Stella, our own Cate Blanchett as Clara, Roberto Benigni as Silvio. As for Mia’s parents, maybe we could have Sandra Bullock as Julie, and Stanley Tucci as Adam.

How long did it take you to write your book?
I wrote the first draft over a period of six weeks and once I started writing it I just couldn’t stop. Naively, I expected this would be the case with the first draft of my second manuscript. Which it wasn’t, and of course that was a big let down! Since writing The Florentine Bridge, I’ve learnt that every book is different.

How did you come up with the title? Did you have alternative titles?
The title came naturally to me after Luca’s first reference to the Ponte Vecchio bridge in Florence, but it’s also symbolic in a number of different ways to the story (sorry, no spoilers!) Often publishers will change the title of a novel before it’s published but in this case my publisher loved the title so we got to keep it and I think it fits perfectly.

How did you come up with the idea for the cover?
I can’t take any credit for the cover! I owe bucket loads of thanks to my publisher, the team at Harlequin and of course the cover designer who did an incredible job of nailing this. I submitted a cover brief and in that said that I thought it would be nice to have an image of a woman on the cover, and I’d like it to represent the fact she is an artist in some way, and it might be nice to have the bridge on there as well. I also sent them a link to
the Pinterest board which I used for inspiration while writing the book. (The woman on the cover looks very similar to the ‘Mia’ I had pinned on my board but I don’t know if that’s coincidental or not). Voila! See what she came up with? I couldn’t have imagined anything more beautiful. It so perfectly represents the tone of the book – it’s warm, intriguing, sensual, and beautiful.

Tell us about your favorite scene in your book.
Just one?! I have a few and I love them for different reasons. One is the flashback with Mia and her parents because I worked so hard on it and it moved me so emotionally. I loved writing the scene where Mia finds a true connection to herself and her art in the Uffizi gallery where she admires the Botticelli painting.

What are you working on at the moment?
I handed in the manuscript of my second book just before Christmas so at some point expect to be editing that. This book, another love story, is set on a flower farm, and without giving too much away, looks at the role memories play in our lives by exploring the question, “if we had our time over, would we live the same life twice?’

I’m also about to face the blank page, as I’m due to start working on my third book very soon. Exciting times!

What was your road to publication like?
I have to admit, I’ve been super lucky with how things unfolded for The Florentine Bridge. This was the first novel I wrote for an adult audience and it was the one that found me an agent and a publisher. After writing the first draft I spent some time polishing it before querying agents. I signed with my agent around five or six months after querying, after which, we took the book through rounds of revision before going on submission. I then had a “Pinch me! Is this real?!” moment when we received more than one offer for the book. I went on to sign a contract from Harlequin MIRA for two books, and we’ve since gone on to sell foreign rights to Slovenia! It’s been a pretty great ride!

How do you usually communicate with your readers/fans?
Facebook! I’m over at
www.facebook.com/vanessacarnevalewriter but I also love Instagram www.instagram.com/vanessacarnevale and have a website and newsletter that goes out once a month. Come say hi!

What do you think makes a really good story?
For me, good stories are ones that leave a lasting impression on me as a reader. I want a book to make me keep thinking about the characters and the world the author has created long after I turn the last page. That usually happens for me when an author creates compelling characters that I care about, and balances that out with plenty of emotion. If a book can make me feel something, I’m usually sold. Beautiful writing also helps. I love books that make me dog ear pages because the writing is so good. I’m always looking for opportunities to dog ear my books. They’re the best ones!

Fun Bit:

Finally in honour of the molto bella Vanessa and her gorgeous Italian book, here’s a really fun (and funny – OMG the answer choice for prego cracked me up!) quiz that tests if you know 13 basic Italian sayings. How Italian are you? I got all 13 right and they called me a ‘True Italiano’ and because I know my husband is reading this,  I'd like to add honey that the very clever quiz people also said – ‘We think this is as good a reason as any to take a trip to Rome and practice in person, don’t you?’. Why, yes clever quiz people! Yes I do! So can we please???

Here’s the quiz, have a go!
