Hi everyone!  Welcome to my periodic newsletter, full of news, recipes, and tips from my blog, The Domestic Man.

I'm happy to announce that one of my big projects for 2017 - a new update to my eBook, The Safe Starch Cookbook - is up and running on my blog!  I'm still in the midst of recipe brainstorming and development for cookbook #3, so it's great to be able to have something tangible for your folks so early in the year.  More info about the eBook updates are below!

Here are the recipes I've posted on The Domestic Man since my previous newsletter:

Garlic Smashed Potatoes - While we typically eat Basic Mashed Potatoes with our daily meals, you can’t deny the fun that is Smashed Potatoes. In few other recipes can you treat a food so poorly–smashing it with the heel of your palm!–and still come away with something that’s both perfectly crispy and secretly fluffy.
 

Skillet-Roasted Winter Vegetables - This recipe isn’t glamorous, and one we make often. Since the vegetables have varying cooking times, the best approach is to par-boil the hardier vegetables – carrots and parsnips, in this case – and then finish them all off together in the oven. Feel free to swap out the carrots and parsnips with other vegetables, like turnips or beets.

Center-Cut Pork Rib Roast This roast's cooking method will work for most bone-in cuts of meat; try it with beef prime rib or roast. The key is to cook the meat at a low temperature (250F) so that the center reaches an ideal temperature without overcooking the outer layers, then to finish it off in a searing-hot oven after a brief period of rest. The timing works out perfectly, as you can rest the roast while you crank up the oven heat – I’m a big fan of this type of efficiency.

Chicken Marengo - A legendary dish, supposedly first made for Napoleon Bonaparte following his victory during the Battle of Marengo in June of 1800.  Crawfish (or shrimp) add a surprising twist to this hearty braised chicken recipe.

In this update, I’ve added 27 new recipes to the eBook, 42% more content than the previous version. I’ve also updated the cover, graphics, and some of the recipe formatting. The Safe Starch Cookbook now contains 221 pages. Here’s a short list of what you’ll find inside the book:

I'm not the only one who has been releasing eBooks recently.  Here are two of my favorites from this past year:

Paleo Date Night - My friend Brian at The Sophisticated Caveman has a unique vision and voice, and I'm happy to see this book out in the wild - it features over 30 recipes perfectly crafted for two.  While you're at it, be sure to check out his vibrant, inspiring Instagram profile!

A Clean Space - I hear a lot about "clean eating", but the idea of clean household products is something that isn't usually on my radar.  I'm particularly excited about Christina Feindel's new eBook, which is hosted at her AIP-friendly site, A Clean Plate.  A Clean Space includes nine non-toxic cleaner recipes, including dishwasher detergent, and laundry soap - plus tips and other resources.

- You can totally buy Paleo Takeout via Amazon or B&N.com, but please also consider supporting your local independent bookstore (they're getting scarcer every year).
 
- If you're strapped for cash (aren't we all?) or enjoy eBooks, I recommend the iBooks version of Paleo Takeout over the Kindle version (provided you have an iOS device!); the iBooks version retains the formatting, illustrations, and design of the print book, and it's really awesome on the iPad.  They are currently $9.99 each on both formats.

- Check out this online store for uncommon ingredients found in the book; stock up now! While you're at it, read my guide for essential tools that I used to cook the recipes; now might be the right time to finally bite the bullet and get a carbon steel wok!

Grilled Romaine Salad - I assumed that the dressing would be the star of the show for this simple salad recipe, but little did I know that the roasted cherry tomatoes would end up being my favorite – they’re like tiny little flavor bombs. While the tomatoes seem like one of the easiest items in this dish, they take the longest. In fact, the rest of the recipe can be put together while the tomatoes are roasting.
