Welcome to Your Newsletter for February

We've had busy start to 2017 and we have lots of interesting things happening at the Foodbank.  Please read further to find out how Christmas went for us.  As always we are appealing for volunteers, if you would like to know more about what a volunteer gets involved in then please see our insight from long standing volunteer Anne Coward.  If you have any feedback on the newsletter or articles for inclusion please contact Jayne at newsletter@barrowfoodbank.org.uk

Foodbank February Update

December is such a joyous time with Christmas, carol services, Christmas dinners at home and with friends and a visit from Father Christmas.  However, for some people, this is a time of  dread.  How will they manage to eat?  Christmas dinner and all the extras is just not going to happen.  We have three of the most deprived wards in the country: Central, Hindpool and Ormsgill.  Central ward has one in every two children living in child poverty.

With the help of the generosity of the people of Barrow, we were able to make things easier for many people.  We fed 1,215 people, of which 540 were children.  In addition to the normal food, each family received a hamper of Christmas food of which 100 were made and provided and packed into lovely hampers by The Parish of Our Lady in Furness.

We gave out 475 presents to children, we are aware for some this was the only Christmas present they received.

When giving out the presents we write the gender and age on so the parents can put their own or Santa’s name on it as is appropriate.  We would not have been able to do it without the very generous gifts from the public as shown in our previous newsletter and the £5,000.00 received from Community Grant Funding.

This was all made possible by the generosity of the public with their kind donations and the many volunteers who helped at Tesco, the warehouse and the drop-in.  With all that was going on, our warehouse looked like Santa’s grotto with many people buzzing around but knowing what they were doing.

A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL

Fruit Juice Appeal!

We're short of UHT fruit juice in our warehouse at the moment, any donations would be gratefully received.

Volunteer Insight from Anne Coward

I have been working as a volunteer for 3 or 4 years, I was at a time in my life when I wanted to do some voluntary work that challenged me and help others who were having hard times.
I was at the very first food collection before the Foodbank doors opened, but I wasn’t in a position to volunteer at that time.  Eventually I was able to join, I’ve tried most jobs, including working in the warehouse, dating, weighing and sorting food and working in the ‘Drop In’ where people bring their vouchers to receive food.  The Drop In is my niche as I like the interaction with people; helping them & talking to them.
I enjoy volunteering very much, it helps me as well as the people using the Foodbank .We are non-judgemental and people can offload on us, which helps them. I hope to support the Foodbank for as long as people need it and I also love the all people I work with!

The Great Barrow Bake Off
The Raiders Rugby Club held a bake off on the 21st January and our volunteer Jean White was invited to be one of the three judges.  The admission charge was food for the Foodbank and people were very generous, Jean brought two car loads of food back to the Foodbank which provided 286 meals.

There was a great variety of 36 cakes to be judged and the winners were a sponge cake, followed by fruit scones and a Rolo cheese cake.  After the judging, the cakes were auctioned off. There was a lovely atmosphere and everyone joined into the spirit of the occasion.

Big thank you to Jo and the Raiders Rugby Club for inviting us and their continued support of the Foodbank.

Another Successful Tesco Collection!
The Tesco neighbourhood collection was a brilliant success for the Foodbank.

We collected 6.788.6 tonnes of food which will provide 16,163 meals to local people in food poverty.

Thank you to both the volunteers who supported the collection and the generous people who made donations.

Your Foodbank Needs You

Have you got 2 hours to spare?  Would you be interested in volunteering with Barrow Foodbank?

If so we have vacancies to work in our drop-in centre welcoming clients to the foodbank, offering them a hot drink and something to eat and giving them their food allocation that has been previously packed by warehouse volunteers.

Alternatively you may wish to work in the warehouse where you receive the donated food, thank the donor, weigh and date the food.  The food then is sorted into the warehouse to ensure that no food goes out of date, finally the food is packed into boxes ready to be given out.

Why not pay us a visit and we will show you around and answer any questions you may have, we are a happy team and you would have all the support you need.

If you have more time to give then please talk to us as there are core roles such as supermarket co-ordinator, administrator or organisational rep that you could help us with.
