The Manor is full of life again now that the Spring 2017 students and faculty have arrived to discover the wonders of Harlaxton. Within the first four weeks, students have kicked-off their Harlaxton experience by being sorted into their respected Houses for House competitions, meeting new friends, and planning weekend trips.
Third Annual UE International Alumni Gathering: June 3 — 4, 2017
UE and Harlaxton Alumni will gather at Harlaxton this summer for the Third Annual UE International Alumni Gathering. Last year’s event was held in Frankfurt and the previous year – London. Alumni Michael Gerlich ’96 and Bruce Roberts ’92 have been instrumental in initiating and organizing these gatherings. Please join them this year at Harlaxton!
Activities will include tours of Harlaxton Manor and the Alumni Dinner with entertainment following. Overnight accommodations are available at the Manor. Find out more information and register online at www.uealumnionline.com/internationalweekend2017.

Welcome back Professor Boyle
Harlaxton College welcomes back Professor Nicola Boyle as a new member of the British Studies faculty. Previously, Professor Boyle served as a literature professor at the Manor, teaching Shakespeare to visiting students. Prior to teaching at Harlaxton, Professor Boyle taught Literary Theory at Loughborough University. Originally from South Wales, she now lives in Repton with her family. Welcome back, Professor Boyle!

Congratulations, Zyggy!
After 16 years at Harlaxton College serving as the Transport Coordinator and security guard, Zyggy Dekanski retired at the start of the New Year. A favorite among students, faculty and staff, Zyggy will be missed by all. Congratulations and thank you for your years of service, Zyggy!

In Memorium
Harlaxton has recently and sadly lost two very good and loyal friends:
Sir Simon Benton Jones, 4th baronet, member of the Harlaxton College Advisory Council for 38 years, passed away on Wednesday, December 28 in Peterborough.
Philip Gerhart, PhD, PE, of the University of Evansville passed away on Friday, January 27. Dr. Gerhart served as the dean of engineering and computer sciences and was a professor of mechanical and civil engineering at the university. He also taught at Harlaxton and was instrumental in establishing the options for engineering students here.

Article by British Studies Faculty Member Translated to Spanish
Titled "¿Revolución o evolución? Dirección y organización militar durante la Guerra de los Cien Años," it is published in Desperta Ferro: Antigua y Medieval, 38 (2016).British Studies professor Dr. Green recently had an article about the military developments of the Hundred Years War translated to Spanish.
Dr. Pouliot Presents at 2017 MLA Annual Convention
On 5 January 2017, Dr Amber Pouliot, Harlaxton College British Studies faculty member, presented a paper on ‘The Brontes in Interwar Fiction: Bridging the Modernist and the Middlebrow’ at the 2017 MLA Annual Convention. The MLA convention is one of the largest and most important conferences for scholars of literature and languages, with thousands of attendees from around the world. The 2017 presidential theme was ‘Boundary Conditions’, and Dr Pouliot’s paper interrogated and demonstrated the permeability of the perceived boundaries between Modernist/avant-garde and middlebrow culture during the period between the First and Second World Wars, using Bronte biographical fiction and drama as a case study.
Dr Pouliot was the associate editor, with Professor Deborah Denenholz Morse, of the Charlotte Bronte Bicentenary Edition of Victorians: A Journal of Culture and Literature, which was published in autumn 2016.

London
A popular College-organized trip each semester, 122 students travelled to London after their first week at the Manor. With a number of faculty-led trips across the city, including the Tower of London, Imperial War Museum and Parliament, students got the full London experience and quickly made new friends.
During their free time students explored on their own, many seeing musicals in the West End, visiting Buckingham Palace and taking selfies with the infamous Big Ben. On the coach ride back to the Manor, students stopped at Hampton Court Palace to explore the 17th century home of King Henry VIII.
Nottingham
The closest major city to the Manor, students travelled to Nottingham to spend the afternoon exploring the streets where the legendary Robin Hood roamed. Many students visited the 17th century Nottingham Castle, while others enjoyed the shops, cafes and restaurants around the city.
Cambridge
Students, faculty and staff explored the town and university where famous scholars and royalty like Stephen Hawking, Sir Isaac Newton and Charles, Prince of Wales attended. Whether students explored the many different Cambridge colleges, had a pint at the Eagle pub (frequented by the scientists who discovered DNA), or visited the Cambridge Market for some shopping, the day-long trip was well spent and thoroughly enjoyed.
York
A day trip to the ancient Roman city of York, students browsed Shambles Street lined with timber-framed houses and shops, toured the York Minster at the city center, and sipped tea at Betty's Cafe Tea Room. Many students also toured the York Castle, established by William the Conqueror in 1068.

The Manor
House Competitions
The students hit the ground running with House competitions after being sorted into their respected Houses (Newton, Mercia, Pegasus or Gregory.) With Gregory currently in the lead to win the House Cup and Key to the Manor, the Houses have competed in a trivia night, a Manor scavenger hunt and a dodgeball game. Tea Time
A longstanding British tradition, students participated in a formal High Tea party in the Ridgeway Great Hall where they were served sandwiches, desserts and (of course) tea. Students mingled with peers, faculty and staff while enjoying their afternoon snacks.
Traditional Chinese Painting Workshop
The talented Master Jack Jiang Hongsheng recently visited the Manor to lead a traditional Chinese painting workshop for students. Paintbrushes in hand, students created beautiful pieces of Chinese watercolor art under the guidance of Master Hongsheng, pictured with the students below.

The Community
Meet-A-Family
The Harlaxton Meet-A-Family program is one of many reasons why the Harlaxton College study abroad experience is so unique. Students Janae Wellum and Jess Koetsier, Meet-A-Family "sisters," are two among many who have said that the best part of their experience so far is being welcomed into the home of their Meet-A-Family parents.
"John and Christine Bruce have been nothing but the kindest and generous British mum and dad. My friend, Jess, and I have felt more at home here because of our family. They're always reaching out to us and offering their assistance in any way that they can. Last week, we shared a lovely meal in their home and went out for afternoon tea. Just this past weekend, our British dad was waiting at the train station for Jess and I as we returned from Scotland. Grantham, England sure does feel like home because of our Meet-A-Family." - Janae Wellum
Visit with Grantham Mayor
During the first week students had the option to tour the town where they'll be living for the next four months with a walking tour of Grantham. Harlaxton was honored to have the opportunity to meet with Grantham mayor Linda Wooten.
