A host of daffodils...and hellebores, iris and snowdrops
February came in with a torrent here in Devon, we wondered if it would ever stop raining. The field we are trying to landscape has been so waterlogged at times we could have taken a dip! But thanks to a break in the weather we have finally managed to plant the large specimen trees which will border a parking area for visitors in time.
It always lightens my heart when I start to see the early flowering plants doing their thing. Iris reticulata suddenly appear together with the snowdrops and within a week the narcissus have shot up and are showing their buds. Hellebores such as Helleborus 'Dark as Night' and our own seedlings are worth their weight in gold at this time of the year when we crave colour and life in the garden. A new seedling that we have just added to the website is H. 'Snow Moon', a large white single flowered form. The flowers, which are pure white with lime green markings at the eye, reach 4 inches across when the plant is 3 or 4 years old. If you have hellebores in the garden try not to disturb the ground around them too much because they like to self seed and you may get a surprise new variety.
