Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf is the new ARC states’ co-chair.
Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf has been selected by his fellow Appalachian governors to serve as ARC’s states’ co-chair for 2017, succeeding Governor Bill Haslam, who previously held the position.

“It’s an honor to be selected to represent the interests of the ARC states,” said Governor Wolf. “I look forward to working with the organization to promote and support projects that have significant impacts on the Region including those that foster business development and job creation; spur the growth and availability of community resources and infrastructure; and improve areas that increase overall well-being, like access to health care and initiatives that address school readiness.”

As the 64th ARC states’ co-chair and the fourth Governor from Pennsylvania to hold that position, Wolf will work directly with ARC’s federal co-chair to continue the agency’s commitment to economic growth and development across the Appalachian Region. Since its formation in 1965, ARC has invested in thousands of community-based projects that contribute to the economic growth of Appalachia by training workers, creating jobs, and attracting additional investment capital to the Region. In fiscal year 2016 alone, ARC approved nearly $110 million in funding for 473 area development projects in Appalachia. This support will help create or retain more than 18,800 jobs; train more than 46,000 students, workers, and leaders in new skills; attract $174.6 million in other project funding; and leverage nearly $350 million in private investment in Appalachia.

INVESTMENTS IN ACTION

Summer of STEM
“To say it was the experience of a lifetime is an understatement.” That’s the reaction of a group of students after attending the ARC and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Summer Institute in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, last year.

ARC and ORNL are accepting applications for the 2017 Summer Math-Science-Technology Institute for high school students and teachers and the 2017 Summer Science Academy for middle school students. These programs offer a unique, all-expenses-paid opportunity for Appalachian students and teachers—many from counties designated as economically distressed by ARC—for intensive, hands‐on learning in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields from Oak Ridge scientists.

Applications for both programs must be submitted to the ARC state program manager of the state in which the applicant's school is located. Applications are due in most states by March 17, 2017; however, deadlines may differ for some states and should be confirmed with the state program manager. Applicants will be notified of their status by mail or email by early April.
Apply for hands-on STEM learning at ORNL!
