Field Report 1/31/17: Meeting season is here and we have spent the last few weeks traveling around the state visiting with growers, listening to our top-notch Extension Specialists, and eating good BBQ. These county grain meetings are probably the best way to hear the about the latest research conducted at NCSU. If your county hasn’t held it’s annual grain meeting yet, NCSPA strongly encourage you to attend! Demand for U.S. Soy is Strong
The U.S. is valued as one of the most reliable and high-quality suppliers of soy in the world, a trend expected to continue over the next 20 years. Rising incomes in the developing world and increased demand for meat, which in turn creates increased demand for protein to feed animals, will increase demand over the coming years. Choosing the Right Lime
Many farmers use lime to optimize the pH in their soil and will base their options for lime from the results of their soil tests this winter. Soil tests should be analyzed for both soil pH and lime requirement/buffer, in order to tell how much lime is required. Soil pH can make or break a crop so don’t fall for the quick fix.
