The Career of a Commercial Airline Pilot
Chad Green is a Captain for Southwest Airlines. He knew he wanted to be a pilot at a young age and was very driven to make that dream a reality. He had his eyes set on the Airforce Academy in Colorado Springs, CO and knowing that's where he wanted to go he starting preparing. That meant getting good grades, being active in clubs and sports and also joining an outside club, such as Scouts.
After graduation from the Airforce Academy, Chad was assigned to fly the OA-10 which is a ground attack aircraft, designed to provide close air support to Army troops on the ground. After that, he became an Airforce Instructor Pilot.
Once he decided to leave the military after 10 years of service, Chad was hired on with Southwest as a First Officer. As a First Officer (co-pilot) his primary responsibilities were ensuring the plane was ready to go for the next flight which included inspecting the aircraft before takeoff & communicate with the control tower/air traffic control. Once he became Captain, his responsibilities were more concerned with creating a flight plan that covers fuel supply, aircraft weight, weather, route and alternate destination as well a passenger and crew communication. Both positions work as a team and alternate every other flight for take-off and landing on their assigned trip. Ultimately the Captain is always in charge.
"Being a pilot is a great career'" says Chad. "Getting to where I am has taken a lot of hard work but it is also very rewarding on a personal level. It's deeply satisfying to fly people safely to their destinations so they can go on that vacation they've planned or flying others who are going to see their loved ones. I arguably have the best office view in the world other than an astronaut, an obvious exception. Like any job though, it has its downsides too. I spend a lot of time away from home and my family. I've missed holidays and special events and after a while, hotel rooms aren't glamorous anymore, they're just rooms to sleep in. With all of that said, I'd still recommend this job to anyone."
