This week we open the NZSA Youth Mentor programme - this is open to applications from 15yr to 18yr olds (they don't have to be NZSA members). We also now have the NZSA StartWrite subsidised service open for submissions from NZSA members for 2017.

NZSA StartWrite - subsidised service open for submissions
For writers and comic / graphic novelists who want to get an appraisal of a portion of writing up to 6,000 words.
- Writers should send in a section of work up to 6,000 words, and a one page synopsis.
- Comic / Graphic novelists need to send in a synopsis and up to ten pages of finished work.
This is an excellent opportunity to get an appraisal of part of your work at an early stage.
Manuscripts are appraised by experienced authors and assessors in a one to two page report. They will also answer up to three specific questions that the writer may submit with the chapter and synopsis.
The subsidised charge for this excellent service is usually either $40 or $45. More

Storylines National Festival Story Tour
For 23 years, the Storylines Children’s Literature Charitable Trust has celebrated an annual Festival of New Zealand’s Children’s Writers and Illustrators with six family-focused days in Northland, Auckland, South Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. It also has produced two “story tours” for Auckland/South Auckland and Northland, aimed at encouraging hundreds of thousands young people to develop a love of books. More

NZSA Youth Mentor Programme Seeks Emerging Young Writers
Three secondary school students will each have the opportunity to be mentored by one of New Zealand’s best professional authors in order to develop their craft and hone their writing skills.

Regional Culture and Heritage Fund - open for applications
The call for applications to the second round of the Regional Culture and Heritage Fund (RCHF) opened on 31 January 2017. Subject to the calibre of applications received, around $12 million is available for possible distribution to qualifying projects. Minister Barry’s media release can be read here.
The deadline for receipt of RCHF Round 2 applications at the office of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage is 5pm on Friday 10 March 2017. Funding decisions will be announced in the middle of the year. More

When Hate Speech and Free Speech Collide
This week the line between free speech and hate speech was thrust to the fore when the University of California at Berkeley cancelled a speech by the ultra-right movement’s Milo Yiannopoulos, editor of Breitbart News. Scheduled to speak at campus, Yiannopoulos’ speech was cancelled after protests and concerns that police could not guarantee security at the event.
Protestors gathered with signs stating that ‘Hate Speech is not Free Speech’ in response to Yiannopoulos, whose comments have been criticised as racist, misogynist, and anti-Muslim.
U.S. President Trump waded unto the debate with a tweet “If U.C. Berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view - NO FEDERAL FUNDS?”
Hate speech and free speech have an uneasy relationship. Last week, New Zealand’s Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy was reported as asking for police to ‘record hate crime statistics to combat racism’.

2017 Ashton Wylie Charitable Trust Literary Awards
Writers working in the Mind Body Spirit genre have until 31 March to enter the 2017 Ashton Wylie Charitable Trust Literary Awards.
There are two award’s categories, one for Books and another for Unpublished Manuscripts. The winner in each category receives a $10,000 prize.
Spokesperson for the Trust, Adonia Wylie, says the judging panel is looking for fiction or non-fiction works that have the potential to uplift and enhance people, relationships and society.
“It is extremely pleasing to reward talented established and emerging writers. We very much look forward to reading this year’s entries.”
The awards are unique in the country for their encouragement of writing in the Mind, Body, Spirit genre.
For the Book category, works must be published between 1 April 2016 and 31 March 2017. Shortlisted writers will be announced mid-July and the award winners will be announced at a ceremony in Auckland in August, 2017.

Frankfurt Book Fair Releases Facts and Figures from 2016
Citing especially strong response to its Literary Agents and Scouts Center and to the Business Club offering, Frankfurt Book Fair found 90 percent of its exhibitors to be players in purchasing decisions.
In its release this week of the annual Facts and Figures information prepared for each year of the fair’s operation, we learn that FBM was attended by 278,023 visitors—172,296 of them in the publishing trade, and 105,727 or 38 percent members of the public. More

Amazon launches £20,000 prize for self-published ebooks
Online retailer Amazon UK has taken on big awards such as the Man Booker and Costa Book Awards by launching its own literary prize – for self-published ebooks.
The Kindle Storyteller Prize carries a cash award of £20,000. The prize is open to any author who publishes their book through Kindle Direct Publishing between February 20 and May 19 this year. More

Agency pricing didn’t restrain Amazon; it strengthened them
Many, if not most, of the people in publishing houses I know have what they feel is a pretty clear picture of the changes we’re seeing in the business. There seems to be a strong consensus that the ebook share is leveling off or diminishing as opposed to print. And there is an enthusiasm about what is characterized as a vibrant and growing independent sector. And stronger print, too many (if not most) people (even inside the industry) figure, means stronger brick-and-mortar and a lessening of the power of Amazon.
