UQ to build a high-performance image processing facility

A new RCC-managed high-performance image processing facility for UQ will be designed and built this year, putting the University on par with similar systems at Monash University and universities in the U.S., Europe and Japan.

The facility, currently titled ‘The UQ Deconvolution Engine’, will provide specialist computing hardware to centrally and automatically perform critical image processing on data captured from digital microscopes from any UQ location.

The facility will be particularly useful to those doing cellular research. It will benefit cancer, neurodegenerative disorder, immune system and allergy research, and other related health and medical research. Read more

Testing phase of UQ’s new data storage technology proves successful

Good progress is being made on the testing phase of UQ’s new high-performance data storage fabric and RCC expects to call for early adopters in the next month or two.

Six nodes of the Metropolitan Data Caching Infrastructure (MeDiCI) are currently being tested, one each at RCC, UQ’s Information Technology Services, the Queensland Brain Institute, the Institute for Molecular Bioscience, and two at the Polaris Data Centre in Springfield. These locations were chosen to serve some of UQ’s heaviest data generators and to link them to the processing and storage facilities at Polaris. Read more

Bioinformatician and program manager join the RCC team

RCC has two new staff members — a program manager for health and life sciences data projects, and a bioinformatician who doubles as a software developer.

Dr Jeff Christiansen joins RCC as QCIF Program Manager. He is currently working on a number of NCRIS (RDS and Nectar)–funded national data projects in biomedicine.

Thom Cuddihy joins RCC as a bioinformatician and software developer to work within QFAB, QCIF's bioinformatics arm. Read more

Hacky Hour at UQ is back!

Hacky Hour at UQ has returned with the first meetup for 2017 taking place on Tuesday, 14 February.

Hacky Hour is held weekly on Tuesdays, 3pm–4pm, at Cafe Nano on UQ's St Lucia Campus. The informal meetup provides UQ researchers and research support staff with a forum to get help from experts (including RCC staff) with any research-related IT issues. Common questions involve HPC problems, or roadblocks with programming languages such as Python and R. Read more

RCC's Igor Makunin to give Galaxy talk at Griffith University

Dr Igor MakuninRCC's Dr Igor Makunin (pictured) will give a seminar at Griffith University on Monday, 6 March about the Genomics Virtual Laboratory and Galaxy-qld, the public server the GVL operates on.

The talk, from 2pm–3pm on Griffith’s Nathan Campus, will provide an overview of the latest developments of Galaxy-qld and related resources for genomic research maintained by RCC. Read more

Join UQ Library's workshops on publishing your data in UQ eSpace

Publishing your research data has become an important part of meeting funding requirements.

Many major funding agencies and government bodies require researchers applying for funding to provide information regarding how data generated during the research project will be managed, shared and made re-useable for future research.

With UQ eSpace, publishing your research data has never been easier.

UQ eSpace is the institutional repository for the research outputs of the staff and students of UQ, and enhances the visibility, accessibility, usage and impact of UQ research.

UQ Library will run two workshops on Monday, 20 February, offering a step-by-step guide on how to create a record in UQ eSpace. The record can be for the data sets underpinning one or more of your publications, or it can simply be for research data you wish to be archived.

Join either the workshop at 12pm–1pm or the one later that day at 3–4pm, both on the St Lucia campus.

Please register. Please contact data@library.uq.edu.au for more information.
