SLFN annual meeting and potluck is Feb. 4

The Sitka Local Foods Network annual meeting and potluck dinner will take place from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Sitka Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall (408 Lake Street, parking off Spruce Street). Bring your favorite dish (preferably featuring local food) to share as we review the past year and discuss our plans for this year. This social event is a good time for people to learn about our organization, including how to volunteer. In addition to a few short reports, we will introduce our new board members and confirm our election of officers. We also have a couple of open board seats. To learn more, click this link.

We need new board members to keep growing

The Sitka Local Foods Network has three open seats on its board of directors due to some unexpected moves out of Sitka, and we also have three board seats whose terms end at the end of the year. This is your chance to help us increase the amount of locally produced and harvested foods in the diets of Southeast Alaskans. There obviously is a lot of interest in local food projects, but we need board members to help make these projects happen. Our nine-member board meets once a month (usually the third Wednesday, unless there are schedule conflicts) at the See House located behind St. Peter's By The Sea Episcopal Church on Lincoln Street. Our board members also serve on at least one committee related to our main projects — organizing the Sitka Farmers Market, growing food at St. Peter's Fellowship Farm communal garden, and hosting a variety of gardening educational opportunities.

To learn more about our board and how to apply, click this link. Feel free to bring a dish to share and join us at our annual meeting and potluck dinner from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Sitka Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall (408 Marine Street, parking off Spruce Street). There will be a short board meeting followed by a planning session from 1:30-5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12, at the Sitka Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall. Our next full board meeting is from 6-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8, at the See House behind St. Peter's By The Sea Episcopal Church (upstairs). All of our meetings are open to the public.

Sitka Kitch hosts Cooking Around The World series

Want to learn how to make a variety of international dishes? The Sitka Kitch community rental commercial kitchen will offer a Cooking Around The World class series this spring at the Sitka Kitch (505 Sawmill Creek Road, inside First Presbyterian Church). This series features a variety of instructors teaching students how to cook dishes from Morocco, Chile, Turkey, Austria (strudel), and Thailand. There are two classes in February, and three in April. To learn more about the class series and get a link to our registration page, click this link.

In addition, watch for another series of classes this spring — Food As Medicine (this series title may change), a five-class series taught by nutritionist Holly Marban as part of National Nutrition Month in March. Details for those classes will be announced soon, once the schedule is finalized.
