Overton Battleground to Breaking Ground Workshop a Success
Texas AgrAbility hosted a Battleground to Breaking Ground workshop at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and Research Center at Overton on January 21, 2017.  Over 50 participants were in attendance, with over half of those being veterans.

Topics included Rural Business Ideas, Business Planning Basics, Possibilities for Farming/Ranching with a Disability, the Battleground to Breaking Ground Entrepreneurial Training Project, and Farmer Veteran Coalition.

We also had individuals from USDA Farm Service Agency, USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service, Texas Department of Agriculture, LoneStar Military Farmers, Heritage Land Bank, and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension speak about their programs and funding opportunities.

Dr. Greg Clary gave presentations on Rural Business Ideas and Business Plan Basics.  Dr. Clary is the director of the Texas Center for Rural Entrepreneurship.
Jack Sheridan, a local East Texas veteran farmer spoke about his experience.  He grows his own produce in his garden to feed his family and has enough left over for several others in the community.
Dr. Joe Masabni, AgriLife Extension Horticulture Specialist, gave a presentation on small farming.  Dr. Masabni works out of the Overton Research Center on numerous projects that improve small farming in Texas.

Appllications for Battleground to Breaking Ground Entrepreneurial Training Project OPEN!

The Battleground to Breaking Ground Entrepreneurial Training Program is a three part training program that combines online and hands on training for veterans and beginning farmers and ranchers.

The goal of the Beginning Farmer Rancher Entrepreneurial Training Program is to increase the number of veteran farmers and ranchers in Texas and enhance the sustainability of veteran new and beginning farmers and ranchers through our innovative, holistic model for education, training, technical assistance, and outreach.

The program features online courses in business planning, risk management, goal setting, funding sources, record keeping, budgeting, marketing, agriculture safety, crop production, and livestock production.  The training also includes hands on field training, mentor-ship, individual education planning, transition services, and disability support services.  The last phase of the program introduces a community of practice and access to land for lease, equipment, and markets.

Partner Highlight

"The Millican Alliance primarily operates on nearly 1,000 acres of varied terrain just south of College Station, Texas, and we live our mission first by treading softly on the land. Where possible, we seek low-impact activities which encourage community growth while celebrating the native flora and fauna, and we have carefully selected local partners who share our love for the outside. By bringing people into nature through these diverse and exciting offerings, The Alliance is creating a healthy new way of life in Central Texas."

We spoke with Andrea Merritt, Executive Director of Millican Alliance and Millican Reserve farm manager, about the role of the Alliance in the new Battleground to Breaking Ground Entrepreneurial Training Project.  Millican is the location of one of the Battleground to Breaking Ground incubation farms.  What this means is individuals who participate in the program have the opportunity to get hands on experience at Millican to complete their 100 hours of training.  Millican Alliance will also be the host of several farm days throughout the upcoming year!

Millican Alliance runs the Market on the Green at Millican Reserve, where local producers and vendors sell their farm products to the community each month. Each third Sunday of the month, the market is a colorful, flavorful, and lively celebration of abundance, discovery, and harvest.

They also have a Comminity Supported Agriculture (CSA) program that provides locally grown produce to consumers in the area through shares.  Individuals pay for a share of the harvest, and Millican Alliance harvests and assembles baskets of produce that are picked up each week.  CSA's are a great opportunity for the producers to get involved selling their produce straight to consumers.
