LRT Update from the City of Hamilton and Metrolinx
Ontario announced that through Metrolinx, it will move forward with planning and analysis for a proposed 16km Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line that would connect with the future Hamilton LRT. This 16km BRT line will replace the previously proposed 2km LRT A-line spur along James Street North. You can read the official news release here and see the proposed BRT route here.
Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx also issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) today. This invites interested parties to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the Hamilton LRT project, and is an important milestone in terms of progress. News release available here.
Regarding the BRT announcement, further refinement of the Hamilton LRT route and feedback received during formal public consultation this fall, indicates that this 16km BRT route from the waterfront to Hamilton International Airport is preferred to the current 2 km A-line LRT spur line on James Street North.
The route will connect the waterfront to the Hamilton International Airport and service major destinations including: West Harbour GO station and the Hamilton GO Centre; James Street North/South business districts; St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton: Charlton and West 5th campuses; Mohawk College; the Upper James business district; and the Mountain Transit Centre.
The decision to seek an alternative option is based on a number of factors including updated ridership data, the opportunity to better feed the 11 km B-line LRT from McMaster University to Queenston Circle, and the opportunity to better support Metrolinx’s Regional Transportation Plan by directly connecting Hamilton GO Centre and West Harbour GO stations. Feedback received during formal public consultation this fall, and motions passed recently by Hamilton City Council requesting accelerated implementation of the entire A-Line were also factors in the decision to explore an alternative option.
Details on the number of stops and project scope will be confirmed through further study by Metrolinx and the City of Hamilton. It should also be noted that the A-line BRT and B-line LRT projects will be delivered separately to ensure that the LRT project remains on schedule for completion in 2024.
