FOSTER ANGELS OF SOUTH TEXAS FOUNDATION
February, 2017

Happy New Year!!  We hope your 2017 is off to a great start!!

With each New Year come many changes.  New Year’s resolutions (no matter how long they may last) give us a chance to start anew and can be a breath of fresh air.  Keeping your head up and your eyes forward is essential to success, but it is also important to reflect on past accomplishments.  Taking joy in one’s good works can lead to greater feelings of confidence, ability, and self-worth.

For Foster Angels of South Texas, 2016 was a big year.  The love displayed by Foster Angels’ supporters, volunteers and employees reached 2,726 children this year in various forms.  We pursued our mission passionately and diligently, providing special and unique gifts for the children we serve.  Ranging from food, clothing, and shelter to educational resources, recreation, and medical services, we were able to improve the lives of children who desperately needed our help.

While the number of children helped in 2016 is impressive, it’s vital to remember the 47,348 children still in foster care in Texas, almost 4,000 of whom live in Region 11 alone.  A child’s average stay in foster care is 28.6 months, often being some of the toughest years of their lives.  Going into the new year, Foster Angels stays committed to alleviating the burden of these years for children in the foster care system.

We would like to wish you a happy new year and thank you genuinely for your continued support in changing the lives of abused and neglected children.

The 2016 Holiday season brought an incredible outpouring of kindness and giving from our supporters!  Please take a moment and read some of our Season Highlights...

ValueBank Texas Southside Branch graciously sponsored 15 children in foster care for Christmas!  With the help of their customers, they made sure each child had tons of gifts to open!

Thank you Xavier Flint, Lizette Carranza, Stephanie Kemp, Scott McManus, Crystal Hlavik-McWha, Daniel Good and Joseph Rodriguez for showing these precious children there are people out there who love and care for them!

The Palmer Drug Abuse Program (PDAP) decided to teach the teens in their Youth Group the importance of giving back!  Lead by Peer Counselor Jared Arthur, these caring young adults created a Go Fund Me page, sold hot cocoa and even washed cars to raise money for children in foster care during the holidays.   Because of their hard work and dedication, 30 foster teens received a $20 gift card just for them!

A heartfelt thank you to the Youth Group and everyone at PDAP for helping us ensure foster teens were not forgotten during the holidays!  Your efforts made a significant difference in each of their lives!!

The South Texas Women's Forum once again once again selected Foster Angels as their Foundation of choice in 2016.  They made a $700 donation to Foster Angels during the Day of Giving, which doubled their contribution to $1,400!

Thank you Jackie Durr Orchard, Celia Williford, Donna Lawson, Marilyn Goans, Cynthia Myers, Ellen Scott, Haley Bennett, Lauren Duke, Suzelle Tinnell, Stephanie Gonzalez and Nancy Hilliard for your care and concern for foster children in our community. Because of your kindness, these children know they are valued, important and loved!

During their festive Holiday Program, members of the Rotary Club of Corpus Christi presented Foster Angels with a check for $1,027, along with a variety of gift cards to support children in foster care!

A heartfelt thank you to EVERYONE for supporting our mission and helping us ensure foster children were not forgotten.

Ross and Erica Patchin, Jay Garrett, David Muir, Chase Puglisi, Lauren Puglisi, Mary Puglisi, Danny Puglisi, Lynn Puglisi, Trish Brummett and PJ Wright sponsored 15 foster children who wanted a bike for Christmas!

Because of each and every one of you, these children were given a needed reminder that the world is full of good things!  For that we are forever grateful!

*****************************************************************************
For the third year in a row, the “Angels” at the Social Security Administration office sponsored foster children for Christmas. Because of each and every one of them, 18 deserving and grateful children received EVERYTHING they wished for on Christmas morning!!

Once again, this amazing group of people embodied the very essence of the holiday season.  We offer each of you our deepest gratitude for bringing joy and hope to so many abused and neglected children!

FOSTER ANGELS OF SOUTH TEXAS FOUNDATION
2017 ANNUAL APPRECIATION LUNCHEON

The holidays have passed, but for Foster Angels, the celebration is only beginning.  For the past sixteen years, Foster Angels has had the pleasure of hosting incredible guests, honorees, and speakers at our Annual Appreciation Luncheon; an event devoted to recognizing individuals who dedicate themselves daily to protecting and caring for abused and neglected children.  This year’s Luncheon will also honor 6 foster children who are excelling in school by giving gifts and recognition for their success.  The event will be held at the Solomon P. Ortiz International Center on April 20th at 11:30 AM and will be an occasion you don’t want to miss!

In the past, speakers have described their experiences as foster youth and how they reached success and never gave up.  They’ve walked their audiences into the light of success, bringing empathy and insight to those who haven’t been in the foster care system and inspiring hope to those who are.  This year, a ground-shattering story of service and sacrifice will be told to the audience by two incredible individuals; Gregg and Peggy Nibert.

Gregg and Peggy have served roughly forty children since Peggy’s first calling to be a foster parent.  The pain of letting each child go to their next home was rewarded by the reception of the next opportunity to serve another child in need.  No matter how long a child stayed with them, the Niberts poured love into each individual in their care.  Gregg and Peggy will be attending the Luncheon to speak about how this service to children and God has changed their lives and the lives of countless others over the years.

The luncheon will be emceed by Courtney Clark, a cancer-survivor who now lives her life to build the resilience and motivation in others.  Having experienced melanoma, brain surgery, and so much more, Courtney is now a published author and the founder of an impactful nonprofit organization.  Soon after launching her nonprofit, Courtney and her husband, Jamie, met a young high school student with dreams of college and success as a musician. Today, Courtney and Jamie are Anthony’s proud parents!

If you are interested in sponsoring a table for the luncheon, your support will be recognized in our program and with a table sign indicating your name or the name of your business.  Individual seats are also available.  This is a great opportunity to share a unique event with employees, colleagues or friends.  Please click here to attend or call Jennifer Starr at (361) 949-1670.  Thank you for being an inspiration for the abused and neglected but up-and-coming children in our community!  We would  also like to thank CITGO for their continued annual Diamond-Level sponsorship and all who show love and generosity annually through their support of this event.

We look forward to seeing you on April 20th!!

Looking for a new and entertaining way to support the important work we do for children in foster care?  How about participating in the Birdies for Charity fundraiser offered through the Valero Texas Open??  Birdies for Charity is a unique way to support our cause by making a one-time donation or pledge one cent or more for every birdie made during the Valero Texas Open in April.  For added excitement, guess the number of birdies you think will be made during the tournament for your chance to win a Stay-and-Play Gift Package!!

What is a birdie?  In golf, “par” is the normal expected score on any given hole. Every one of the 18 holes on a golf course has its own “par” assigned to it. A “birdie” is one stroke under par for a hole, possibly derived from the term “It flew like a bird” to indicate a good shot. For example, Par 5 on Hole 18, a Birdie would be 4, an Eagle would be 3, and a Double Eagle would be 2 strokes to get the ball in from the tee box, onto the green and into the hole.  The 2016 Valero Texas Open had 1,834 birdies made!
