with residents


NEW DAY, TIME: Ward 1 meeting
Ramey Johnson and Charley Able, City Council members for Ward 1, have a new time and day of the month for their monthly meetings with residents. The meetings will be at 9:30 a.m. on the first Saturday of the month. For February, the meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Holy Shepherd Lutheran Church, 920 Kipling St. Subscribe to Ward 1 Meeting Reminders.

Ward 2 meeting
Scott Koop and Sharon Vincent, City Council members for Ward 2, will meet with residents from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at the 40 West Arts District, 1560 Teller St. Subscribe to Ward 2 Meeting Reminder.

Shakti Ward 3 meeting

Ward 3 meeting

Ward 4 meeting
David Wiechman and Barb Franks, City Council members for Ward 4, will meet with residents from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Green Mountain Presbyterian Church, 12900 W. Alameda Parkway.

NEW DAY: Ward 5 meeting
Special topic: neighborhood safety, Rooney Valley Master Plan
Karen Harrison and Dana Gutwein, City Council members for Ward 5, will now meet with residents on the first Saturday of the month. For February, the meeting will be at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Bear Valley Church, 10001 W. Jewell Ave. This month’s meeting will provide safety tips from the Lakewood Police Department followed by a discussion of neighborhood concerns and the Rooney Valley Master Plan, which covers land uses on property in Lakewood and Morrison but not development proposals for property in Jefferson County at the intersection of Alameda Parkway and C-470. Subscribe to Ward 5 Meeting Reminders.

City Council Update


Monday, Feb. 3: 7 p.m. Special Meeting followed by 8 p.m. Study Session

Pending agenda items: Special Meeting for City Council to continue the council’s discussion and deliberation on the Rooney Valley Master Plan. Study Session for presentation on the Neighborhood Participation Program, an update on the housing study and a discussion on defining a half term as used in the City Charter regarding term limits. (Agenda items reflect the latest available information and are subject to change.)

State of the City
Join Mayor Adam Paul for his first State of the City speech, where he will cover highlights from the past year and outline his vision for the city’s future. In addition to the speech, this community luncheon raises funds for nonprofits in Lakewood. The event is 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on March 9 at the Sheraton Denver West, 360 Union Blvd. Tickets are available at StateoftheCity2017.org.

Birds rescued

Residents alerted Lakewood Animal Control officers to two birds in distress in the area of Bear Creek Lake Park this week. Officers found a Red-tailed Hawk that might have flown into power lines although it had no visible injuries. An owl in the greenbelt east of Fox Hollow Golf Course was found with a broken jaw. Officers captured and transported both to a bird of prey rehabilitation facility. See the photos at Facebook.com/LakewoodPDCO.

First Friday includes new name for arts loop
Come for the unveiling of the official name for the arts loop located in the heart of the 40 West Arts District during the 40W First Friday event. The open house will be 4-7 p.m. tonight at Hi Little One Gallery, 1528 Teller St.  Details at Lakewood.org/40WestArtsLoop.

‘Spotlight’ on Teen Tech Center
On the newest edition of “Spotlight on Lakewood,” Mayor Adam Paul looks at the upgrades to the popular Teen Tech Center at the Gold Crown Fieldhouse. Watch it at Lakewood.org/Spotlight.

Sustainability news
Learn about an upcoming open house for the Sustainable Neighborhoods Program in the latest edition of the Lakewood Sustainability e-newsletter. Read it at Lakewood.org/SustainabilityNews.

Help us with Imagine Lakewood!
Speak up about your priorities for Lakewood’s arts, parks and recreation. Imagine Lakewood! is the process to update the Community Resources Department’s master plan. It will help set the course for how Lakewood can support community access to parks and play over the next five to eight years. Randomly selected households are receiving a mailed survey, and an online version for those who don’t receive a printed survey will be available starting Feb. 15. Details at Lakewood.org/Imagine

Nonprofit grants available
Lakewood’s Community Grant Program, administered in coordination with the Lakewood Legacy Foundation, is now accepting applications. The program establishes a process to review and evaluate requests that Lakewood receives from nonprofit organizations. For details on eligibility and applying, visit Lakewood.org/CommunityGrant.

Challenge your senses with a naturalist guided night hike in Bear Creek Lake Park. The Snow Full Moon Hike will be at 5 p.m. on Feb. 10. Register at Lakewood.org/BCLPevents.

Neighborhood meeting
Public Service Company of Colorado has expressed an interest in a special use permit for a new wireless communications facility at the existing Kendrick substation at 1800 S. Union Blvd. The company will meet with residents from the surrounding neighborhood at 6 p.m. on Feb. 9 at Dunstan Middle School’s library, 1855 S. 40 West Arts Summit 
Help shape the vision and future of 40 West Arts at its second annual 40W Summit from 6 to 7:45 p.m. on Feb. 9 at Pure Colorado Event Center, 7110 W. Colfax Ave. No prior experience or knowledge of the district is necessary. This fun and interactive workshop will cover district initiatives for 2017, give you the opportunity to provide ideas and feedback and feature a cash bar, light bites and live artist demos. Puppy Bowl
The cutest game in sports has kicked off. Foothills Animal Shelter’s Puppy Bowl runs through this weekend, making more than 20 puppies available for adoption. Details at FoothillsAnimalShelter.org.

Art committee
Each year the Alameda Corridor Business Improvement District leases six to eight sculptures for display on the Lakewood Civic Center Plaza. A committee of artists, residents and business people chooses the sculptures. The district is looking for two volunteers to serve on the committee for 2017. Tax help
Red Rocks Community College is a partner with the Piton Foundation to help hard-working families become more financially secure by providing free tax preparation services through the Tax Help Colorado program. College students will prepare and e-file tax returns free of charge for individuals with household incomes of less than about $54,000 a year.  More information is available by dialing 2-1-1 (it’s a free call), visiting Piton.org/tax-help or going to Facebook.com/TaxHelpColorado.
