The Office of Career Services Continues to Monitor News Regarding Federal Hiring Policies

SIPA  graduates pursue careers with a wide range of employers in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. These include employers in consulting, finance, law, technology, and other businesses; international multilaterals and foreign governments in addition to U.S. federal, state, and local government agencies; and foundations, non-governmental organizations, think tanks, educational institutions, and advocacy organizations.

Among MPA graduates in the class of 2016, 39.1 percent of respondents accepted positions in the private sector, while 25.6 percent took jobs in the nonprofit sector. Another 33.8 percent joined the public sector, with positions in the U.S. federal government accounting for 5.0 percent.

Among 2016 MIA graduates, 48.0 percent of respondents accepted positions in the private sector and 22.3 percent joined the nonprofit sector. Another 26.3 percent of jobholders joined public sector employers, including 5.6 percent in the federal government.

For additional statistics about alumni employment, please visit the SIPA website at https://sipa.columbia.edu/careers/employment-statistics.

If you have specific concerns, please contact OCS for more information and guidance.

Attention J-Termers!

The Office of Career Services has received some questions regarding private sector recruiting for summer internships.  Most formal summer internship recruiting occurs in the fall, however there are always ad hoc positions that will be advertised in the spring.  Be sure to read the OCS Weekly Newsletter to keep up on what new positions have been added each week.  We also send out an Upcoming Deadlines email weekly.  Finally, OCS encourages students to set up a Search Agent in SIPAlink to receive notifications about postings for particular organizations, fields or roles.

Please note that you will be able to participate in fall 2017 recruiting for internships taking place in the summer of 2018!

Meet your SIPASA Career and Alumni Chairs

OCS has partnered with the SIPASA Career and Alumni Chairs to foster dialogue between the student body and office administrators.  On Wednesday, February 15, a SIPASA representative will be available outside of OCS from 1:00pm to 2:00pm to collect feedback concerning students' job searches and answer common career-oriented questions.

Karen Chen is a Master's of Public Administration student with a concentration in International Finance and Economic Policy. Prior to SIPA, she worked in Chicago doing operations analytics and then investment management for a hospital’s investment portfolio. She also has experience in procurement and economic analysis with the U.S. federal government. Karen loves corgis, swimming and classical music. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Chicago.

Xin Zhang is a Master's of Public Administration student concentrating in International Finance and Economic Policy. She got her Bachelor of Management Degree in Accounting from Zhongnan University of Economics and Law in China and then worked as a SAP Finance/Controlling Consultant for two years before joining SIPA. Xin enjoys traveling, yoga and Chinese classical literature. Xin is always willing to receive opinions and ideas about SIPA students' careers and find out ways to make improvements.

NYC Career Series Schedule

Below is the spring 2017 schedule for the NYC Career Series.  The spring series focuses on public sector and nonprofit industries because the majority of their hiring takes place during this time.  Conversely, private sector panels are held during the fall semester.  Panelists include a mix of SIPA alumni and other professionals working for a variety of companies based in the NYC metro area.  For more information about these career panels, or to register to attend, please log on to SIPAlink.

CCSI Now Accepting Applications for Summer Internships

The Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment (CCSI), a joint center of Columbia Law School and the Earth Institute, is now accepting applications for internship positions for summer 2017.  Interns are staffed to one or more specific research projects depending on the background and interests of the particular applicant.  Unpaid and paid opportunities are available; summer internships are full-time (35-40 hours per week).

CCSI is a leading applied research center and forum dedicated to the study, practice and discussion of sustainable international investment.  Their mission is to develop and disseminate practical approaches and solutions to maximize the impact of international investment for sustainable development.  The Center's work is organized around 3 major areas of research: Sustainable Investments in Extractive Industries, Sustainable Investments in Land and Agriculture, and Sustainable International Investment Law and Policy.

Summer 2017 internships are listed here. The deadline to apply is March 31, 2017.

Internship Opportunities at CAIR

Still looking for that perfect summer internship?  The Council on American-Islamic Affairs (CAIR) has specifically requested applications from SIPA students.  You can take a look at available internships here; applications are accepted year-round.  No time for another internship?  Consider applying to be an outreach volunteer!

Reminder: Spring 2017 Internship Paperwork Reporting Requirements

Internships are an integral part of the student experience at SIPA.  While matriculated within their MPA or MIA degree program, students are required to complete at least 120 hours of an internship along with submitting completed paperwork as part of their academic coursework.

Students may also choose to complete the internship requirement with no credit (no course registration required), or they may choose to register for: U9013 course section 001 for 1.5 credits (for 120+ internship hours) or U9013 course section 002 for 3 credits (for 240+ internship hours).  The internship must be related to the student's concentration/specialization, as well as it must include professional, substantive work.  Lastly, the internship may not be conducted in a family-owned organization/business.  For full details, please review all sections of the Internship Requirement page here.  Information regarding the required paperwork can also be found at the same link under the "Required Paperwork" section.

The deadline for all paperwork (the student's Internship Report, the Internship Employer Information Form to be completed by the student, and the Supervisor Evaluation Survey) for Spring 2017 internships is *April 15, 2017.

*However, students graduating as of May 2017 should submit their paperwork before the April 15 deadline, so that they may be certified in time for graduation upon review of their internship information.

PLEASE NOTE: International students should be aware of special regulations when seeking paid internships in the United States.  Please review the International Student Work Authorization section of the OCS website here.

Summer 2017 Internship Funding Opportunities

Looking for funding for your summer internship?  Returning students in most SIPA programs may be able to receive specific grants/fellowships or even awards from other Columbia institutes or external organizations if the internship is also a degree requirement.  Below is a short list of the SIPA funding opportunities, plus you can review a full list of opportunities and eligibility requirements via SIPAlink and the OCS website here.  Best of luck for a successful summer!
