And congratulations to the ladies of Theta Pi Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta on winning the week-long Homecoming Championship — and to all the fine CBU organizations who competed and made 2017 Homecoming one of the best ever! SLEEP: A Cornerstone for Student Success


The CBU Community is invited to join Dr. Tim Doyle, Associate Vice President for Student Life, as he presents “SLEEP: A Cornerstone for Student Success” on Tuesday, February 7, 1:00–1:50 p.m. in Spain Auditorium. In this presentation, Dr. Doyle will emphasize the importance of making good sleep decisions as a college student, explore the ramifications of sleep deprivation, examine the warning signs of different sleeping disorders, and encourage a healthy sleep schedule. Attendees will receive a variety of online and print resources to assist in the journey. This program is offered as a service of the CBU Counseling Center and the Office of Student Life. This might be one of the few times you’re encouraged to fall asleep during a presentation…

Nick Peña
(Visual & Performing Arts) was selected as the 2017 Memphis in May poster artist. Peña is pictured above at the unveiling of his artwork at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art on February 2. “Reflecting on the symbolism and icons of the Colombian landscape, people and culture, I created a painting that represents the contrast and harmony between nature and man, representation and abstraction, and past and present,” Peña said about the work. The poster is available at a cost of $30 each — with the limited edition, signed and numbered, collector’s poster at a cost of $60 each — at Midtown Framer & Art and at 1910 Frameworks.

CBU Engineering Named "Best Value"


Best Value Schools has named Christian Brothers University as one of the Best Value Small Colleges in the fields of Chemical and Biomedical EngineeringCivil EngineeringElectrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. In order to be considered, each school must offer at least one targeted program for students seeking a bachelor’s degree in the field and demonstrate a genuine commitment to affordable education,  with estimated annual costs of less than $27,000 a year. In addition, they must each maintain an overall undergraduate graduation rate of at least 50%. Schools were ranked based on the categories of Academic Breadth and Depth, Student Support, and Affordability using the NCIS College Navigator database and program research. CBU was ranked #1 in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, #3 in Civil Engineering, and #4 in Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

Black History Month: Screening of Loving



As part of the Black History Month, Student Life will host a  viewing of the Movie Loving on on February 15 at 6:00 p.m. in Spain Auditorium. Loving is the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple, whose challenge of their anti-miscegenation arrest for their marriage in Virginia led to a legal battle that would end at the U.S. Supreme Court. The movie will be followed by a discussion of the historical, social, and legal aspect of the film, facilitated by a CBU faculty member.

Under Construction: Due to construction between Stritch Dining Hall and Stritch Chapel the entrances to both will be sealed off. Daily and Sunday Mass will be moved to Stritch Dining Hall until further notice. There will not be Eucharistic Adoration this Wednesday, February 8 due to construction.

Harpswell Foundation: Call for Applications


The Harpswell Foundation and CBU are seeking applicants for the 2017 Leadership Residency. The Harpswell Foundation is a non-profit organization with the mission to empower a new generation of women leaders in Cambodia and the developing world. The Leadership Resident will live in a dormitory in Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, for three months, teaching in-house classes and engaging the university students in leadership building projects. The Leadership Resident will also spend informal time with the students, helping them understand more about the world outside Cambodia. 

Applicants must be: CBU students, or recent graduates, female, native English speakers, or very fluent in English with excellent accent. Candidates must have a commitment to empowering women and be able to live in Cambodia for three months during the summer of 2017. Ideal candidates are seniors or recent graduates with international travel experience, curiosity, a commitment to the Lasallian principles of social justice, and a warm and friendly personality.

Study Abroad News


Scholarship deadline for our exchange school in Austria is February 10! The Austrian Ministry of Science and Research offers the ERNST MACH grant for all students with a non-European citizenship who plan to attend in Fall 2017 or Spring 2018. With 940€ a month, this grant allows students to cover all their costs. If you are interested in this opportunity and studying abroad in Austria, please contact the Study Abroad office before February 10.
Our trip to London and Dublin is completely full! If you missed out on this opportunity, Fr. Paul Watkins will be offering another trip for the School of Business during Fall Break 2018. 
Prof. Steve Rivera in the CAPS program is offering a trip to Barcelona, Spain during fall break 2017. CAPS students have the opportunity to take a psychology course focusing on Spanish culture.

MEN'S BASKETBALL (14-8, 11-5 GSC): Buccaneer forward Adam Dieball scored 23 points and tied a 39-year-old school record with 16 assists as he led the Bucs to an 88-78 win over West Georgia Thursday night. The Bucs survived early foul trouble to their two leading scorers and rolled to an 81-63 win over West Alabama Saturday afternoon for Homecoming. This week's schedule: Thursday night at 7:30 p.m., they visit West Florida, and Saturday afternoon when they take on Valdosta State at 3:00 p.m. 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (12-8, 9-7 GSC): The Lady Bucs rallied from a 13-point second-half deficit to come as close as one point in the final minutes, but visiting West Georgia held on for a 60-57 win Thursday night at Canale Arena. Forward Samantha Reeves scored 30 points, including the game-winning turnaround jumper in the lane with 13.7 seconds remaining, to lift the Lady Bucs to a 67-64 Homecoming win over West Alabama Saturday afternoon. This week's schedule: Thursday night at 5:30 p.m., they visit West Florida, and Saturday afternoon when they take on Valdosta State at 1:00 p.m. 
BASEBALL (2-2): Visiting Blue Mountain took advantage of two CBU errors to score five runs in the fifth inning en route to an 8-3 win Wednesday afternoon in the season opener for both schools. On Friday, the Bucs scored four runs in the first inning and held on for a 6-5 win over Lindenwood at Nadicksbernd Field. The Bucs scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed as they won 8-6 over Lindenwood Sunday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field. This week's schedule: Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., they face Missouri Southern State at USA Stadium; and Saturday and Sunday, they host Columbia at Nadicksbernd Field at noon and 1:00 p.m. respectively.
SOFTBALL (2-1): The Lady Bucs opened the season with a pair of wins in the LSU-Alexandria Mardi Gras Tournament Friday afternoon over Central Baptist and host LSU-Alexandria. On Saturday, the Lady Bucs committed eight errors as they dropped a pair of games to Central Baptist and host LSU-Alexandria in the LSU-Alexandria Mardi Gras Tournament. This weekend, the Lady Bucs travel to Montgomery, AL for the Auburn-Montgomery Tournament.
