Letter from the Directors
Dear Everest Families,

This Friday, we conducted the ninth ever ninth grade lottery in Everest’s history and extended offers of admission to the lucky 8th graders who will become our Class of 2021! This moment of excitement and celebration also served as an opportunity for me to reflect on how far we’ve come as a school.

We inhabit a beautiful and spacious building. The families in our first lottery didn’t even know if the school’s first home would be habitable. Indeed, our first building got stuck in a bureaucratic battle and, for the first five weeks of classes in Everest’s history, forced the faculty to get creative and take all 100 inaugural students to Stanford’s campus via Caltrain every single day! This Friday, exhilarated new families walked out of the rain into a new, beautifully-constructed, LEED-certified building that we are lucky enough to call our home.

Our culture and school identity is strong. When Everest started, our only logo was a scribble of a tall mountain in the school’s first colors: orange and black. It was the students in the Class of 2013 who actually decided on the mascot of a Snow Leopard. (The contentious process lasted about six weeks and didn’t end until every single student came to unanimous agreement!) Our students then advocated for new colors to distinguish ourselves from our Wildcat neighbors. Today, new families walked in to see signs of Everest identity everywhere, including the beautiful sign donated by the Class of 2016 and multiple spirit wear options for sale on the spot.

We have created a reputation of success. In the late 2000s, parents saw that Summit Prep could be successful, but nobody really knew if their results could be replicated. Everest’s new families were walking into an untested school that had yet to prove itself. Since then, Everest has been named one of America’s Most Challenging High Schools by the Washington Post and the 21st best high school in California by US News and World Report. Today, new families asked about college and heard that 99% of Everest graduates have been accepted into at least one four-year college.

This school has become a family. Following the lead of the first students and parents of Everest, each year we have deepened our roots in the community as we build close relationships with our families. We have earned trust by remaining unwavering in our commitment to our mission, by always trying to learn from last year and getting better everyday, and by caring deeply for the young adults who make our building their second home. This year, we had over 40 ninth grade applicants who are the sibling of a current or graduated Everest student. It is deeply touching and a significant vote of confidence to know that our families keep returning to our school.

As we welcome the ninth cohort of Everest students into our unique family, let us all take a moment to appreciate the love, commitment, and hard work that brought us to where we are today.

Sincerely,
Chris Lewine & Drew Moriates

EPO Update: CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS TO DRIVE ON STUDY TRIPS!

Our teachers have been working very hard to plan a rich, informative and fun College/Study trip for our students!  The more a student is exposed to colleges and universities the more they see themselves in that world and see the amazing possibilities that world can provide them.

Our College/Study Trips are scheduled as follows:

San Mateo County Safe Routes to School (SRTS)

San Mateo County Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a collaborative effort between City/County Association of Governments and the San Mateo County Office of Education. Through education and encouragement efforts, San Mateo County SRTS supports initiatives to increase the number of students who walk, bike and carpool to school.  Currently, 100 schools in San Mateo County are formally engaged in the SRTS program.  The goal of the program is to engage as many schools as possible in encouraging students to take an active mode of transportation to school in order to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality around schools.  The survey will remain open until February 15, 2017.  The data gathered will be used to develop a baseline for school related travel patterns in San Mateo County.  It will not be used to single out schools and the transportation behaviors of their constituents.  The data for your school will be available to you to help support and encourage active modes of transportation to school whenever possible.  If you have any questions about Safe Routes to School or the Parent/Caregiver Survey, please call or email Theresa Vallez-Kelly – tvkelly@smcoe.org650-802-5306.

Thank you for your help in making San Mateo County a safe place for students to walk and bike!
