It's Apartment Hunting Season!
Is your apartment up to code?

Here's what to look for:
  • Is there adequate lighting?
Each room needs a light fixture, & hallways should be well lit.
  • Does each room have adequate outlets?
Each room needs 2 outlets except the bathroom, which needs only a light fixture, & the kitchen needs both a light fixture and an outlet.
  • Is everything in working order?
Bathroom fixtures & any other provided appliances must be functional.
  • Is everything watertight? Rodent-proof? In good repair?
  • Are there at least two exits?
There should be two exits from each room and two points of egress from the apartment. All doors to the outside must have locks.
  • Are there functional smoke & carbon monoxide detectors?
  • Is it clear of temporary electrical cords?
Electrical cords must not be hidden under rugs or pass through doorways.

Dear Community Ambassador,

I signed a lease in February and paid my first month's deposit, but I still haven't received a copy of my lease from my realtor.  The realtor said we can have a copy in May when the rest of our payments are due. My roommates  (and our parents!) are concerned we don't have a copy of the contract. When are we legally required to have a copy of the lease?

Sincerely,

No Lease in Sight
Dear No Lease in Sight,

Your landlord is required to provide you and your roommates with an executed copy of your lease within 30 days of signing the lease. You can cite page 15 of the Good Neighbors Handbook to explain this requirement to your landlord. If you experience issues with your realtor or landlord, call the City of Boston's Office of Housing Stability at 617-635-4200 or contact Off Campus Student Services.

Sincerely,

Stephanie, Susannah and Kait
