It's Apartment Hunting Season!
Is your apartment up to code?
Here's what to look for:
- Is there adequate lighting?
Each room needs a light fixture, & hallways should be well lit.
- Does each room have adequate outlets?
Each room needs 2 outlets except the bathroom, which needs only a light fixture, & the kitchen needs both a light fixture and an outlet.
- Is everything in working order?
Bathroom fixtures & any other provided appliances must be functional.
- Is everything watertight? Rodent-proof? In good repair?
- Are there at least two exits?
There should be two exits from each room and two points of egress from the apartment. All doors to the outside must have locks.
- Are there functional smoke & carbon monoxide detectors?
- Is it clear of temporary electrical cords?
Electrical cords must not be hidden under rugs or pass through doorways.
