Economic Development  - Barton Business Park

Allegany County has constructed a 40,000-square foot shell building on 27.5 acres in the Barton Business Park. The primary objective is the creation of jobs according to Allegany County Department of Economic and Community Development Acting Director Jeffrey S. Barclay.

This building was constructed to appeal to a light manufacturer. It is now completed and is being shown to prospective tenants. Lease, Lease/Purchase, and a straight Purchase are all options to take advantage of this property. Allegany County lacks available space, especially new space, in the 40,000 to 50,000 square foot range. This building was designed to be expandable to 80,000-square feet.

The speculative building approach is standard for Allegany County and has been used since the mid-1980’s to attract businesses. This construction was financed by the county; through the proceeds of sales and leases of other County-owned assets and properties. In our market, speculative industrial buildings are not usually taken on by private developers due to the financial risks involved. Tenants should be attracted to the new shell building because all significant obstacles are mitigated. Electricity as well as water and sewer systems are installed and ready for use. All permits, most notably the Maryland Department of the Environment non-tidal wetlands and waterways permits, are in place. The building is ready for immediate occupancy. The time it takes to be open for business is usually a critical component to potential tenants.  In the case of the Barton Shell Building, prospective businesses will be able to locate here and start operations quickly.  Having a completed shell building is a competitive advantage for Allegany County.

Barclay may be contacted at 301-777-5967, 800-555-4080, and jbarclay@alleganygov.org. The website for the Allegany County Department of Economic & Community Development is www.alleganyworks.org.

PACE: Positive Attitudes Change Everything

Allegany County Presents 125M of Water and Sewer Projects

The 41st PACE was successful. PACE is under the sponsorship of the Cumberland / Allegany County Industrial Foundation, Inc. (CACIF) and the Garrett County Development Corporation. The reception attracted 475 and 330 attended the breakfast in Annapolis at the Loews Hotel in late January.

Maryland Governor Lawrence J. Hogan gave the keynote address at the breakfast. Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot and US Senators Benjamin Cardin and Christopher Van Hollen made remarks. Franchot presented the Comptroller’s Medallion to the PACE Co-Chairs. This recognizes Marylanders who make a difference in their communities.

PACE is a self-funded, annual premier economic development event for Allegany and Garrett Counties. PACE provides a valuable and effective venue for these two Mountain Maryland counties to present strategic needs and specific requests to the Maryland General Assembly. Allegany and Garrett Counties have this important voice in Annapolis because of personal participation and superior support.

Fifty entities were sponsors and provided financial support for the 41st PACE. Eighteen informative, interactive, and personally staffed displays were showcased at the reception and breakfast. Fifteen entities in Allegany and Garrett Counties contributed the door prizes. These featured products, services, and experiences. The grand prize was a mountain bike.

Allegany and Garrett Counties organize individual strategic meetings before and after PACE to discuss projects with key state and federal officials. Of note, this year Allegany County officials had the opportunity to discuss 125 M of water and sewer projects. Specifically, Allegany County Commissioners, County Administrator, County Attorney, Finance Director, Public Works Director, Economic Development Director, and staff members presented water and sewer projects to funding partners: US Department of Agriculture/Rural Development, Maryland Department of the Environment, and Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. Municipal representatives from Cumberland, Frostburg, Lonaconing, Luke, and Westernport, and LaVale Sanitary Commission representatives also presented individual projects to these officials.

You are warmly invited to support the 42nd PACE in 2018!

Allegany County Office Building

The Allegany County Office Building, 701 Kelly Road, Cumberland, now has new names for two room destinations frequently used by the members of the general public.
  • The Allegany Room: Room 100: The Allegany County Commissioners hold their public business meetings in this room. The room number did not change.
  • The Potomac Room: Room 230. The Allegany County Commissioners hold their public work sessions in this room. This room was previously identified as Room 212.
There are also three functionally designated conference rooms in the building:
  • The Administrative Conference Room: Room 424. This room was previously identified as Room 408.
  • The Finance Conference Room: Room 207.
