Charles Drew, blood bank pioneer
 
Charles R. Drew, MD, MSD (1904-1950), was an American surgeon whose expertise in blood preservation helped shape blood banking in the United States. His doctoral work was completed at Columbia, and in 1940 he became the first African-American to receive a doctor of medical science degree from P&S.

The Shotokan Karate Club and Columbia University Public Safety periodically team up to offer free self-defense classes on campus. Catch the next class this Thursday, Feb. 23, at Bard Hall; more information and an RSVP link are available here.

Knowledge Center Carnival 🎈

The Knowledge Center is hosting an open house carnival on Wednesday, Feb. 22, on the lobby level of the Hammer building. The CUMC community is invited to stop by from noon to 2 p.m. for food, fun, games, and prizes!

Velocity Photoshoot: Models Wanted

Velocity, Columbia’s ride to end cancer, needs cycling enthusiasts 18+ to appear in a series of ads inspired by vintage cycling posters. You’ll be seen on billboards, on posters, and in print around NYC promoting a great ride for a great cause: accelerating cancer research and treatments at CUMC.

PT-CAN, the Columbia University Program in Physical Therapy Community Action Network, recently organized a clothing drive at the CUMC bookstore. The donated items will be distributed by the NYC Rescue Mission to individuals who are currently homeless.
