Startup Peoria, a program of the Greater Peoria Economic Development Council, announced the launch of the Startup Travel Grant for those who need to travel to take the next step in growing their business. The grant is intended to fund trips that will help entrepreneurs and startup companies meet with potential investors, suppliers and customers. Interested parties should fill out the online application at startuppeoria.com/startup-travel-grant. A selection committee will review the applications and in-person interviews will be held before a decision is made. For more information, call (309) 495-5910.
The Rotary Club of Peoria is now accepting applications for its 2017 Community Service Grants. These grants are for direct services to programs that enhance the quality of life in the Peoria area and/or improve the local health, human service and educational services in the community. Grant amounts range from $200 to $2,000. Applications can be downloaded at peoriarotary.org, or by emailing infodowntown@peoriarotary.org. Completed applications are due by March 10th. Quest Charter Academy is now accepting applications for enrollment for the 2017-2018 school year. Any family who lives within Peoria Public Schools District 150 boundaries with students in 5th through 11th grade may submit an application. There will be open houses for interested families at Quest High School tonight (Wednesday, February 15th) from 5 to 6:30pm. Applications are available at questpeoria.org. For more information, call

Peoria City Hall is a top-16 finalist in the Engaging Local Government Leaders’ (ELGL) City Hall Madness competition. Over the past two weeks, ELGL members and friends have taken part in narrowing the field from 64 to 16, and Peoria is currently up against Kannapolis, North Carolina in the bracket-style competition. Voting ends at midnight on Friday, February 17th. The winner will receive the prestigious “Leslie Barbara Knope Greatest City Hall Trophy,” a complementary ELGL organizational membership which includes unlimited job postings for the year, and bragging rights. Common Place Family Learning Center announced afterschool programs for children in grades K – 12 to receive homework help and tutoring, mentoring, and a variety of enrichment activities. All programs are offered free of charge through support from the Heart of Illinois United Way and contributions from area individuals and corporations. Volunteer tutors and mentors for the programs are needed from 3:30 to 5:30pm, Monday through Thursday. Retired teachers, college students, engineers and medical professionals are invited to join the tutoring team to help support student progress in math, reading and science. The UnityPoint Health – Pekin Auxiliary is accepting scholarship applications from local students enrolled in a healthcare professions program. Each year, scholarships are given based on course of study, scholarship achievements, course requirements, letters of recommendation and financial need. Any student residing in the Pekin area is eligible to apply; priority is extended to those who intend to return to the community to practice their professional skills. The Peoria Regional Office of Education presents the 15th annual Lincoln Senior Awards Banquet, with dinner beginning at 6pm and ceremonies at 6:30pm. Sixteen seniors from each of Peoria County’s high schools will be recognized for exhibiting the traits of Abraham Lincoln, in addition to numerous other awards. Thursday, February 16th @ Par-A-Dice Hotel Casino
The Peoria Ad Club American Advertising Awards Reception Gala will take place from 5 to 8pm. The evening will begin with cocktails and a local entry showcase at 5pm, followed by the presentation of awards at 6pm. Local radio host Greg Batton will emcee the event. Peoria County will present “Preparing for Long Term Care,” a free public workshop from 6 to 8pm. Heddington Oaks personnel will discuss what to consider when planning long-term care for you or a loved one. Registration is recommended due to limited seating. Thursday, February 16th & Friday, February 17th @ Morton High School
The Morton Gameball Run is a two-day event featuring the run at the Athletic Field on Thursday and a special run ceremony prior to the MHS boys basketball game on Friday. District 709 schools participate with fundraising activities, Gameball shirts, and partnerships with local businesses to support Children’s Hospital of Illinois. Saturday, February 18th @ Peoria Players Theatre

Tuesday, February 21st @ Community Foundation of Central Illinois
Bridging the Divide, a discussion aimed at creating a shared understanding between rural, suburban and urban counties in Illinois, will take place from 1 to 3pm. The event is hosted by Forefront, the state association for grantmakers, nonprofits, advisors and allies. From these discussions, the organization is hoping to partner with community leaders to ultimately advance strategies and partnerships that create just and equitable communities throughout the state.
