Help us out by sending your snapshots of Grace happenings from Sunday mornings or other times you are gathered with Grace folks, wherever you are!

OK, so...

On this date in 1758, mustard was advertised for the first time in America.

That has nothing to do with anything related to church.

But these things coming up in the next week have everything to do with church, sharing our talents, enlightening our minds, serving with our hands, challenging our perceptions, and getting helpful things done:
Quilting
Friendship Action at a mosque in Cedar-Riverside (in "Community")
Archives Planning Session
Adult Forum on our incredible sanctuary floor tiles
Newsletter deadline for March
Taking Off the Mask discussion
Loaves and Fishes volunteering

February 19 — The Moravian Floor Tiles at Grace: What do the Symbols Mean?
You’ve probably seen them hundreds of times, but have you ever taken a close look at the symbols on the floor tiles at the front of our sanctuary?  Donna Wain Erickson has, and she will enlighten you during this forum.  Where did the symbols come from?  Who made them?  What do they represent?  What is their significance?  This is the second in a series of forums celebrating our 100 year old building!

ARCHIVES PLANNING SESSION
Saturday, February 18th from 10:00am to 12 noon
The Archives and History Committee will hold an informational/planning/work session at church. We will show you where the archives are housed and what we have, think out loud about what needs to be done, and even start some of that work.  Whether you just have curiosity about our history and records, would consider helping on a one-time basis, or are open to working on a (semi-) regular basis, please join us on the 18th.  Our history is that we work sporadically but more intensely when we get excited about an event or project.  Many hands, skills, and brains will help enrich the work of caring for our past.  Please join us!

TAKING OFF THE MASK: Exploring Healthy Masculinities
Tuesday, February 21, 7:00-8:30 pm at University Lutheran Church of Hope (601 13th Ave. SE)
What does it mean to grow up masculine in our society and culture? Last spring our congregations viewed the documentary The Mask You Live In. This film follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity. Grace, Hope, Lutheran Campus Ministry and Cherish All Children are planning an event to deepen the conversation with a community panel and discussion on toxic messaging and behavior, and the ways we can support healthy masculinity. This will be a valuable discussion about our role in counteracting cultural barriers to healthy relationships. We hope you can attend on February 21 and invite others. If you haven’t already, consider viewing this important documentary (available on Netflix…a copy is available in the church office at Grace).

LOAVES AND FISHES VOLUNTEERING
Wednesday, February 22 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church (2424 18th Ave. S)
2:00 pm Prep
5:00 pm Serve and Clean up
Contact Pat Benson (from University Lutheran Church of Hope) to volunteer: 651-328-9793.

Sunday, February 26th in Fellowship Hall
Pancakes served 9:15-10:15 & 11:30-12:30
Entertainment provided by our youth at 9:45 and noon
Suggested donation of $5/person—this is a fundraiser for the youth trip to Holden Village this summer. There will not be a High Tea this year, so we hope everyone can come support the youth at the Mardi Gras Pancake breakfast. Pancakes (including gluten-free), sausage, fruit, coffee, juice and stellar entertainment served up!

BOOKFAIR
Sunday, February 26 in Fellowship Hall

Opportunity to purchase books from a local business! Red Wagon Books comes back to offer great titles, and portion of the proceeds benefit Grace. Come with cash, card or check!

GREAT DECISIONS BEGINS SOON
Great Decisions 2017 begins February 27 with a program on the future of Europe. Today Europe finds itself in the midst of what some observers have termed “the worst political crisis since World War II.” In addition to Brexit and the potential breakup of the EU, issues related to immigration, a newly aggressive Russia, terrorist attacks, and a battered Euro are just some of the problems Europe is facing. How will these issues impact the relationship between the U.S. and Europe? Our speaker for this program is Mary Curtin, Diplomat in Residence at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and retired Foreign Service officer.

Join the Grace Great Decisions group in the Peace Chapel on Monday, February 27 at 7 pm for an informative and timely discussion. Everyone is invited. If you are not a member of Great Decisions, there is a small charge to attend.

Looking ahead to Lent:
ASH WEDNESDAY is March 1
Join us for worship at 12 noon or 7 pm, or the Lutheran Campus Ministry-led service at 9 pm. More information about mid-week Lenten suppers, worship and small groups will be available soon!

CLASS OFFERING AT GRACE
Begins Sunday, March 12 during Grace Time
(meeting location TBD)
Financial Peace University:  You CAN take control of your money!  When it comes to managing money, this class follows Biblical principles to teach you how to:
  1. Become Debt Free - Pay off your credit cards, car loans, mortgage, and student loans
  2. Prepare for the Future - Save for financial emergencies and confidently plan for retirement
  3. Get on a Plan Together - Create a budget that actually works for you AND your spouse (single folks, this class is for you too, as we'll talk about creating an accountability partner)
Over 4.5 million people have gone through this course and taken control of their money.  The average family has an $8,000 financial turnaround in just the first 90 days!  The course will go over 10 weekends, with 9 sessions that you will split watching videos at home and attend group discussions on Sunday mornings.  Aaron Browne (Grace member) and Jen Wise will help facilitate this course for Grace community members, and share their testimony on the positive effects this course has had on their own lives.  We look forward to having you in the course! Looking ahead to summer:
SUMMER FAMILY CAMP
August 6-9, 2017 at Camp Hiawatha (near Grand Rapids)
Family camp this past summer was such a success, we’re offering another opportunity this summer! Camp Hiawatha is part of Voyageurs Lutheran Ministry in northern Minnesota. This camp offers similar programming as last year’s camp in a beautiful setting. Find a brochure by the office or visit vlmcamps.org to learn more or register – or talk with Jenny Odden (jdragseth@gmail.com).

Baby meals needed!
Four families are welcoming five babies into their hearts and homes very soon. On February 4, Benjamin joined big sister Mabel and big brother Charlie at the Magennis-Schnobrich household. Kristina, Chris and Celia Bonello will welcome a baby girl sometime in the next month. Peter and Kristin Bauck are expecting a baby girl AND a baby boy by mid-March; and Heidi Johnson-McAllister and John McAllister will make Sam a big brother sometime in March. Phew! That will be one large three-year-old Sunday School class in the fall of 2020!

Baby meals are a wonderful way to welcome them to the Grace community. If you are able and willing to make a meal or two – or contribute to a gift card or two for a meal delivery – please talk to Julie Anderson downstairs on Sunday or contact her at anderjs@mninter.net or 651-628-9631.

COMMUNITY

FRIENDSHIP ACTION AT DAR AL-HIJRAH MOSQUE
(504 Cedar Ave. S, Mpls.)

Friday, February 17 from 1:30-2:15 pm
Dar Al-Hijrah Mosque was the first mosque to open and be run by the Somali community in Minnesota. This coming Friday, people will gather outside the mosque to offer friendship, hot tea, and coffee to those departing the mosque following Jummah prayer. This is not a protest rally—just an act of friendship toward our Muslim brothers and sisters! You are invited to show up to lend your friendship, perhaps help serve coffee and tea, perhaps hold up signs offering support (not protest signs). Parking is a challenge; plan to park further away or utilize public transportation. If you have questions, please contact Michael at mike@oprmn.org.
