New statistics on transplant, organ donation

The Canadian Institute for Health Information has released its annual dialysis and organ donation statistics, highlighting data that shows the risk of patients being hospitalized is highest in their first week of dialysis, and that patients younger than 18 are at highest risk.

Also available is the annual Canadian Organ Replacement Register, 2006 to 2015, which provides annual statistics including data tables and figures, CIHI snapshot, methodology notes and data quality documentation. To find out more, visit www.cihi.ca.

Mark your Calendar: March 9 is World Kidney Day

The 12th annual World Kidney Day (WKD) will take place on March 9. The theme for this year will focus on Kidney Disease & Obesity - Healthy Lifestyle for Healthy Kidneys. WKD is a joint initiative of the International Society of Nephrology and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations.

Beyond WKD, the entire month of March is dedicated to kidney health, as March is Kidney Health Month. As usual, The Kidney Foundation will be very active and we thank all our volunteers for helping to raise awareness and funds through March Drive campaigns and at community health activities. Visit our website frequently for more details.

February is Heart Month
in Canada

Did you know that high blood pressure (also called hypertension) may cause chronic kidney disease? The reverse is also true: chronic kidney disease frequently causes high blood pressure.  Heart health may help your kidney health also. Learn more about the link between kidney disease and heart disease.

Ask Others: Do you know your risk?

Ask your work colleagues, friends and family members if they know their personal risk for kidney disease. Invite them to try our interactive tool and to spread the word about kidney health information, including understanding the link between kidney disease and diabetes.

KITCHEN

Corn and Fennel Soup

Fennel is a higher potassium vegetable but pairing it with an acceptable potassium vegetable like corn is a great way to safely include it into your diet!

Spaghetti with Shrimp

Try this quick pasta dish that goes together very quickly and is very low in salt – thus very well adapted to Heart Month.
