Gold Side Hits a Bull's-Eye with “A Very Notti Musical”
On the evening of Saturday, Feb. 11 Gold and Purple alumni and students filled Palmer Auditorium to witness the 99th performance of the University’s storied homecoming tradition, College Night.

Before Saturday’s performance, Purple had a strong near 30-point lead over Gold.

On the Palmer stage, Purple Side brought fictional characters from various centuries together to experience the magic of NYC in “Showtime,” bringing their total score to 502 out of 636 points. Golds later won the night with their retelling of Robin Hood with Maid Marian as the true hero in “A Very Notti Musical,” bringing their total score to 528.

UM Alumni Return for Homecoming 2017
On Saturday, Feb. 11, University of Montevallo alumni across several class years reunited on UM’s brick streets to attend a variety of homecoming activities and the University’s near century-old homecoming tradition, College Night.

During the annual Homecoming Awards & Recognition Luncheon, three alumni were honored for accomplishments in their careers as well as their continued dedication to the University.

Jason Styres ’06 received the Nathalie Molton Gibbons Young Alumni Achievement Award, Stephanie Newton ’03 received the Nathalie Molton Gibbons Alumni Achievement Award and Jim Methvin ’73 received the coveted Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Board of Trustees Approve Center for the Arts Funding
On Feb. 10, the UM Board of Trustees approved funding for a new multi-million dollar Center for the Arts. Once constructed, the building will serve as an interdisciplinary teaching and learning space, performance venue, gallery, wardrobe shop/storage as well as the new home for the Department of Theatre.

New Endowed Scholarship for Coach Rob Spivery
On Saturday, Feb. 11, amidst other homecoming activities, the University honored former UM Athletic Director and Men’s Basketball Head Coach Rob Spivery during halftime of the men’s basketball game. Spivery led a stellar career at UM, producing 160 victories and six All-American players as head coach. In honor of the athletic legacy he left at UM, the University has created an endowed scholarship bearing his name.

Nominations for Student Employee of the Year Due
The week of April 9 is National Student Employment Week. To celebrate, the UM Student Employment office is urging all departments to nominate one deserving student worker to be recognized as the UM Student Employee of the Year (SEOTY). All nominations are due by Friday, Feb. 17 and can be filled out on the student employment website.

The UM SEOTY will be awarded $500 and will be nominated for an additional $500 given by the Southern Association of Student Employment Administrators.

Faculty/Staff Highlights

Marcus Lane, associate professor of theatre, was this year’s recipient of the College Night dedication.

Dr. Richard Thames, emeritus professor of German and former chair of the Department of Foreign Language, was recognized as the 2017 Alabama World Languages Association’s Founders’ Award recipient. Thames received the award on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the annual AWLA conference at Auburn University for his major contributions to the study of foreign language in the state.

University Happenings

UM Students Offer Free Income Tax Filing Assistance
The University of Montevallo Stephens College of Business is once again offering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The service allows low-to-moderate income citizens to get their taxes filed for free by certified student volunteers. This no-cost method also offers invaluable experience for student volunteers.

The VITA program is offered in Morgan Hall room 202 each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until April 15. Those seeking to utilize the service are encouraged to make an appointment by calling 205-665-6531.

During each appointment, clients will need to bring a photo ID, social security number for each family member and working adult, W-2s and other income forms, childcare provider name, address, tax ID and bank routing and account numbers for checking and savings accounts.

Admissions To Host Coffee & Conversation Event
The Admissions Office is hosting a coffee and conversation event on Feb. 28 for all faculty or staff who’ve recently sent a child to college or are in the college search process. The event starts at 3:30 p.m. in the Farmer Hall Meeting Room.

Clothing Drive Donations Requested
The offices of Partnerships and Outreach, Service Learning and the Career Center will host another Dress For Success event for students on April 13.

They are currently seeking clean, gently-used donations for men and women for the annual UM professional clothing drive benefiting UM students:
Men — suites, ties, shirts, jackets, slacks, belts and shoes
Women — suites, shirts, jackets, slacks, skirts, dresses, shoes and accessories

Donations will be accepted through Friday, March 24, and can be dropped off from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. at the GloCo Building, located at 845 Valley Street. To schedule a pick up, email Kelli Holmes.
