This year marks the 10th Anniversary of Language Immersion Programming in District 742. In case you are not familiar with Language Immersion, 10 years ago Clearview and Madison Elementary Schools began Spanish and Chinese Immersion respectively at the kindergarten level. Several of these students now attend Tech High School and are blended into our World Language Classes. I point this out because we’ve offered exceptional opportunities for our students in World Languages for decades. Tech students can celebrate that they have the unique opportunity to select courses in Spanish, German, French, American Sign, and new this school year, Chinese language. The benefits of enrolling in a World Language are endless. Research indicates a correlation between language study and higher ACT and SAT scores along with higher academic performances at the college level. Developing proficiency in other languages broadens career options. Skills in languages other than English make those not bound for postsecondary study more attractive employment candidates in a wide range of careers where communicating with diverse customers is necessary. Good language achievement enhances a student’s college prospects and opens paths for a wider range of college-level fields of study. Another important ingredient is the cultural learning that takes place each day in a World Language classroom. Our Tech students examine customs, traditions, and overall daily life of native speaking countries across the world, gaining a stronger perspective and understanding of the diverse world we live in. I’m thankful for the World Language opportunities our students have and the corresponding experiences they will utilize the rest of their lives.

We’ll try to provide regular updates each month as related to the development of the new high school that will replace our current Tech and is slated to open in the fall of 2019. Currently, there is a New High School Design Team that meets regularly to consider the various design configurations of the new school. This team is in the Schematic Design phase of the project. In other words, the team considers where various programming is in the school and is not yet focused on specific details. That will come later in the Design Development phase. Here’s been the focus thus far:
- After receiving input from our Technology Ed teachers and gathering further advice from the New HS Design team, the general sense is we’ve created an overall schematic design of Career and Technology Education spaces that will serve our curricular needs. These spaces are in visible areas throughout the building that will be an attraction for all students.
- Music and drama staff have provided input on recent designs making some efficiency suggestions that will improve the overall functionality of the Fine Arts areas.
- As we developed the overall design for Technology Ed, we took a first look at the Media Center and how these spaces, along with our Learning Neighborhoods, mesh together, keeping in mind the needs of a 21st Century learner. The Media Center needs to be tied much closer to our programs out in the Learning Communities to optimize effectiveness and be flexible at the same time. More to come in this area.
- We’ve done the same for physical education and activities areas, talking to coaches and teachers that share these spaces, as well as Administration offices that includes school nurse’s space and guidance counseling areas, again, bringing their ideas forward to the HS Design Team for consideration.

The winter season at Tech is winding down and it is hard to believe. Sections have started for some teams, while others will be starting soon.
Here is a short summary of how winter teams are doing and a schedule of activities:
|
|
Girls Hockey - They finished the regular season in 2nd place in the CLC with at 9-3 record. They were 17-7-1 overall. They received the #3 seed in sections. They defeated River Lakes 3-0 in the quarter-finals and lost to Roseau in the semis. Great season girls!
Boys Hockey - It has been fun to watch this team gel over the winter season. They are 9-2-2 in the CLC and finished in second place. Their overall record is 13-7-2. They had a big win over Cathedral and even more important, both teams used it at a fundraiser to help a Cathedral hockey player who is dealing with cancer and a Sartell assistant coach, whose wife has cancer. The teams raised over $4,000!!
Girls Basketball - The team is 5-9 in the CLC and 9-13 overall. They are really starting to play well and will be entering the playoff season with confidence. Their first playoff game will be on Feb. 28.
Boys Basketball - They are playing very well right now. They are 10-2-0 in the CLC and 17-4 overall. They are a very deep team, with a lot of players who are making contributions. They are looking to make a deep run in sections.
Wrestling - They are 7-1 in the CLC and 12-4 overall. They finished in second place in the CLC and will start sections Feb. 17 and 18. Junior Austin Brenner broke the overall win record in January. Each time he wrestles and wins, he breaks his own record!
Boys Swimming and Diving - They are 4-3 in the CLC and overall. They are a young, competitive team. They had the CLC Championships on Feb. 11 and they finished in 5th place as a team. Ben Hoffman won the 200 yd freestyle and the 500 yd freestyle. Bingham Shaw won the 50 yd freestyle and 100 yd freestyle.
Gymnastics – They finished 7-0 in the CLC and finished as CLC co-champions with Willmar. They will be competing at Sections on Feb. 17 in Bemidji. They will be looking to advance to state and hope to defend their state championship.
Dance - They have had a very good season. They finished 2nd in the CLC and they qualified for state in Kick and Jazz. They finished in second place at the sections for both of those competitions. The state tournament will be on Feb. 17 and 18 at the Target Center. Look for the team to be very competitive at the state tournament!!
Alpine Ski - They had one skier qualify for the state tournament and that was Nathan Hilbert. He has consistently been in the top 4 every race.
Nordic Ski - The team hosted the CLC Championships on Jan. 26. Both the boys and girls finished in third place. Individually, Kaethe Schroeder won the girls event and Gabby Hennes finished in second place. They also had 3 individuals qualify for the state tournament. Kaethe and Gabby both qualified for the girls and Zeb Osgood qualified for the boys.
|
Adapted Floor Hockey - They are off to a great start with a 6-1. They will be starting playoffs in early March.
The Robotics Team had 2 teams qualify for the state tournament that was held at River’s Edge Convention Center on Feb. 3 and 4. One of the teams received the Best Community Outreach Plan in the State of Minnesota!
Math Team has one meet left before the state tournament and they are still in the running to qualify. The state tournament is in March.
Knowledge Bowl - They are doing very well this season! They are improving each week and they are gearing up to host their invite on March 2.
Speech - They have had a couple meets already and are doing very well. They have a lot of competitions coming up and they host 2 big meets this year; their own invite on March 25 and they host the section meet on April 6.
One Act Play - Tech Drama participated in the One-Act Play Subsection contest on Jan. 26. They performed Robert Johanson's "The Secret of Madame Defarge," an abridgment of Charles Dickens' classic novel "A Tale of Two Cities." This play will also be 1/3 of a set of one-acts performed Feb. 17-18 at Tech High School. They did not qualify for the sections, but they had a great performance! Please come and watch the play on Feb. 17 or 18.

Culture and Climate Message
|
|
|
On behalf of the students of Tech’s Culture and Climate Leadership group, we, the students of Tech, want you to know that our group’s work is to support the district mission, specifically, “…to create a safe and caring climate and culture”. The work of our group is to learn more about how our members can have an impact on creating an environment here at Tech where all learners are valued and honored. Our group would like you to know that we all have to come together in this rapidly changing world and not only accept diversity, but truly celebrate it. We are a community of learners and we are here to support you. At Tech High School we honor the pillars of Pride, Respect and Responsibility and Tech is OUR school. We accept all cultures and nationalities at our school. Every student comes to us from a unique situation and deserves to be valued and supported by everyone in our school community.
