AT Demonstrated: Zippie Voyage wheelchair and Prime Engineering Stander

Leyton had spent most of her days in a bed and not being a part of her family’s activities due to seizure activity Leyton with her new ATthat prevented her from being in typical baby positioners. She loves her time in the wheelchair and stander which provide safe, fun body positions. This allows her to be more interactive with family and friends in a variety of positions. It has also had a direct impact on her body by facilitating her lymphatic system to decrease swelling in her legs and feet.

Leyton had an equipment demonstration for the stander and wheelchair. She loved it! Her family had never seen a stander or wheelchair before and immediately wanted to start the process. SoonerStart gave the family the information needed about the process to access this type of equipment for their child.

AT Highlight - Snap Scene App on the iPadSnap Scene logo

When we find that children have a speech delay or disability, we may choose to support their speech development by using sign language or low-tech tools like photographs, pictures, or symbols that they can point to, touch, or hand to their communication partner.

For early communicators, children can also use high-tech devices with speech output. Research has shown a Snap Scene screencouple of great points when helping young children and those who are early communicators:

  1. Children may need access to vocabulary in the context of a photograph or picture also known as a visual scene display.
  2. Just-in-Time programming of “hot spots” using a visual scene display can facilitate communication “on the fly” allowing early communicators to communicate about motivating topics and eliminating the time it takes to pre-program devices and guess what vocabulary a child may want to “say.” One device that has these features is the Snap Scene app on the iPad.
