Dear Woodside Educational Community,

As the Board and I continue to review the Woodside Elementary School District administrative structure for next year, our goal, as always, is to be good stewards of the District’s fiscal resources. Our focus is on minimizing expenses in thoughtful ways that do not compromise the student or parent experience.

With regard to the principal positions, over the past 10 years we have sought to focus on the middle school as part of our strategic plan and to simultaneously enhance and support the elementary school. Since 2014 we have operated with Steve Frank and Pam Duarte in leadership roles and have seen very positive effects on school climate, student performance via ongoing teacher evaluation and grade level oversight, and staff and parent satisfaction due to their diligent and dedicated professional efforts.

The Board and I have reviewed our administrative structure for next year and we have determined that we need to have both an elementary and a middle school principal in order to continue to successfully implement the great work started by Steve and Pam. Having an administration that directly supports students, teachers and families on a daily basis is critical to maintaining the high quality instructional experience our students benefit from every day.

We will continue to benefit from savings in administrative costs by having Steve Frank continuing to teach for 33% of his day next year. During our current budget year, we will save approximately $20,000 by employing an interim instead of immediately rehiring for our elementary principal. In addition, we have incorporated a $100,000 savings in our operating budget for next year by streamlining expenses in materials, renegotiated contracts, and technology hardware and adjustments to administrative overhead will include a 20% reduction in the CBO position.

We recognize the expense of this staffing model both in administration and teaching ratios and we have spent the greater part of this year studying our enrollment and budget in all areas, and we will be making several targeted cuts in various administrative expenses across multiple departments for the 2017-18 school year.

Warmly,

Beth Polito
