Higher Education Programs at NYU Steinhardt

Celebrating All You Do

Congratulations to Master’s Student Christopher Whitehead!
Christopher was awarded the Professional Excellence Award at the 36th Annual LICSPA Conference (Long Island Council of Student Personnel Administrators) held February 3rd. As the Graduate Assistant in the Office of Campus Life at LIU Post, Christopher has expanded his position; originally focused on residential programs, it now focuses more on diversity and social justice. Most notably, he hosted the first “Cultural Explosion” attended by over 600 students. His commitment to providing opportunities for all students through innovative programming and mentorship has been shown on many occasions. The work he has done inspires those around him to do better work. Recently, Christopher has accepted a position at NYU as an Academic Advisor for the College of Arts & Science and Assistant Director of the University Learning Center.

Doctoral Spotlight  — Nikki Youngblood
Nikki Youngblood, Candidate for the Doctor of Education in Higher Education Administration, was recently selected to serve as Associate Dean for Pre-Professional Advising and Adviser to the Senior Class at Barnard College. Formerly Nikki directed the college's Academic Success and Enrichment Programs, a suite of state and institutional funded opportunity programs aimed at supporting students underrepresented in higher education.

Nikki shared, "While this is a shift in my portfolio of work, this is an ideal opportunity to increase my reach in the overall success of students at the college." Nikki is in the final stages of her dissertation research.
Alumnae Spotlight  — Roberta Garbarini-Philippe
Roberta (MA, 2011) currently holds the position of Confidential Administrative Associate to the Chancellor of The City University of New York. In this position she works closely with the Chancellor and his Chief of Staff allowing her to see and understand the scope of responsibility and qualities required to lead a large public education system. Working within the CUNY system has allowed her to hone in on her administrative skills in a completely new environment.

“It makes me proud to work for a University that gives many people from underrepresented and immigrant populations access to high quality and affordable education."
Masters Spotlight  — Armando Figueroa
In his roles as Steinhardt GSO Senator and Graduate Student Intern for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Master’s student, Armando Figueroa is supporting underrepresented students, mobilizing student activism, and empowering youth through outreach. In Undergraduate Admissions, he serves on the diversity initiatives team participating in outreach to students from underrepresented backgrounds and struggling communities. As a first-generation college graduate himself, Armando wants to give students from similar backgrounds the same opportunities he has enjoyed. Being at Steinhardt, has given him more connections to professionals doing research and working within these communities.

“I get to bring together my passion for access and equity, and foster a welcoming environment for the diverse student population we pride ourselves on.”
Faculty Spotlight  — Terrance Nolan
Terrance Nolan, NYU’s General Counsel, has been an adjunct faculty member teaching the graduate course Higher Education and the Law since Spring 2005. Dating back to the 1980s, this course teaches Master’s level students about the evolution of law in regards to institutions of higher education in order to allow them to better assess the legitimacy of their policies. The class materials connect very closely with work Nolan handles in his professional career and he appreciates the chance to work with students more closely.

“Most students in the program are working or have internships in higher education. The experience and perspective they bring to the course adds immeasurably to the class discussion.”
